The modern healthcare sector uses various devices and procedures to treat patients. The devices used in medical procedures are prone to serious infections. With the number of patients increasing in hospitals, the associated healthcare infections have emerged as a severe health issue in the past few years, posing a big threat to patient safety. It is estimated that over 20%-30% of these healthcare related infections can be prevented by intensive hygiene and control programs.

PITTSBURGH —Protesters at the Ellis School in Shadyside say newly replaced janitorial staff at the school will be paid "poverty wages."

The group gathered outside the school during a fundraising dinner and expressed dismay at the school's decision not to rehire its janitorial staff when their contract expired at the end of July. Instead, the school hired a new cleaning crew and pays them $7.75 per hour.

"Think about how much these people are making," said Alyce Toombs, a member of the old janitorial staff. "They're not making $25,000 a year .. I believe that at $7.75, these people might be making $12,000 or $13,000 a year... And who can live on that?"

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Health officials say the flu season is off to an early start in states neighboring Minnesota.

The Minnesota Department of Health doesn’t officially start tracking cases until October, but they are hearing about reports that the illness is already showing up in numbers that are close to what other states like Wisconsin, Iowa and the Dakotas are seeing.

In Wisconsin, officials say from the start of the month through Monday there have been 19 confirmed cases of influenza in the state. Eight people have been hospitalized. In 2016 during this time they only saw five cases.

North Dakota health officials say they have confirmed nine cases so far this month, including four in counties that border Minnesota. Three of them were across from East Grand Forks. The other was near Fergus Falls.

    Truck Buildout

For San Antonio residents, there’s a new weapon: The Trash Can Cleaners, a mobile automated and self-contained cart cleaning service that comes to the curb following trash service and cleans and sanitizes carts. A majority female-owned business, The Trash Can Cleaners began as idea tossed around by Brannon Fowler. Previously, Fowler had run a pressure washer business that specialized in cleaning oil drilling rigs. Eventually, he started making biodegradable soaps that washed the oil rigs with an environmentally safe cleaner.

The National Labor Relations Board has issued a complaint against the digital on-demand platform Handy Technologies Inc., alleging that workers who provide its home cleaning services are employees despite the company’s claims to the contrary.

The case is one of the first in which the agency is directly addressing under what circumstances a sharing-economy company’s control over its workers makes it their legal employer –- an issue on which its approach could soon change under Republican leadership.

The complaint, issued last Monday by the agency’s Boston-based regional director and provided to Bloomberg by the workers’ attorney, alleges that Handy “has misclassified its cleaners as ‘independent contractors,’ while they are in fact statutory employees” who are entitled to the protections of federal labor law.

We know that cleanliness is important, but at what price? It’s bad enough that antibacterial soap is contributing to the growing drug-resistant bacteria dilemma, but now new research suggests that using too much bleach may increase the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a serious and often deadly lung condition.

A recent study found that nurses who used disinfectants to clean surfaces at least once a week had a 24-percent to 32-percent increased risk of developing COPD over the course of eight years compared to nurses who used these products less frequently. This link remained even after researchers made adjustments for other COPD risk factors such as age, smoking status, body mass index, and ethnicity.

"Our findings provide further evidence of the effects of exposure to disinfectants on respiratory problems, and highlight the urgency of integrating occupational health considerations into guidelines for cleaning and disinfection in healthcare settings such as hospitals,” explained study author Orianne Dumas, a pulmonologist at the French Institute of Health and Medical Research,...
