It is very important for cleaning companies to ensure that their employees know the correct precautions to follow concerning bloodborne pathogens. Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms found in human blood that can cause disease. Hepatitis B(HBV) and Human Immunodeficiency virus(HIV) are two majors diseases that are highly infectious when it come in contact with the mucus membrane.  Companies need to make sure the employees know how to protect themselves and respond to situations that may be contaminated with bloodborne pathogens.

The Occupational Safety Health Administration(OSHA) has created guidelines that all employers must follow to ensure employees treat all bodily fluids as being contaminated. Every jobsite has to have a written exposure control plan available in case an employee is exposed.  The plan must stay updated and reviewed annually.  Center for Disease Control(CDC) has established Universal Precautions as well.

Employees should be trained to wear the Proper Protective Equipment(PPE) and know how to dispose of needles in the proper container.  Employees should also know to disinfect their buckets and equipment after use and properly dispose of towels in a biohazard bag.  Most importantly, they must wash their hands immediately after cleaning up bodily fluids.  All of these precautions has been established for the safety of the employee and their clients.  Knowledge is very powerful and necessary to ensure we follow guidelines that protects everyone's health.

“Gone too soon”, we’ve heard it said time and time again, but I guess cliches are cliches for a reason. When you have a person that you loved so much and that made a profound and positive impact on your life taken from you so early that their memory is hazy in your mind, “gone too soon” is an appropriate sentiment I guess.

My uncle wasn’t a perfect man. His myriad of transgressions began way before I was born, but he was a loving man, and he loved me. He taught me how to play strategy games and always encouraged me to think critically but to have fun doing it. Looking back, I know that it wasn’t always a convenient time to play with me. I couldn’t tell you what was specifically happening with him then, but I can remember the look in his eyes conveyed a look of being tired, weary from a hard life lived and a battle I didn’t even know he was fighting.

He eventually lost that battle, and closed his weary eyes to take a well needed rest. I know it sounds silly in a way, but I now know the technical term for what took my uncle. It was a bloodborne pathogen

I’ve lost several relatives (including my uncle) to disease. Disease is a merciless combatant. It is no respecter of persons and takes the child and the old alike. I have felt the sting of loss caused by disease too many times to consider it something to mess around with. We owe it to ourselves, our families, and our communities to do everything we can to take this fight seriously.

Take it from a grown man who was once a little boy who would have given anything to play Chess just one more time with the person he loved . This matter is truly a matter of life or death.

Janitors and Janitorial staff play a crucial role in preventing infectious diseases from spreading. Often, sickness results from unclean conditions. Without janitorial services, we would live under the threat of becoming infected with illnesses that could be easily avoided. This prevents the progression of society, since many people would be hindered by poor health because of an unclean environment. Cleanliness is something important not only physically, but also to mental welfare.

Clean conditions can help motivate people and support mental health. While being physically healthy is extremely important, supporting mental welfare through keeping a clean environment holds equal value. People work better in clean conditions, which helps to keep our world moving. This affects our daily lives because while we do work, people like janitors clean up and make sure the workspace is sufficient enough to support good work ethic.

Through this, our daily life is affected. Every day that we go to work, we can see a clean environment and work somewhere where we do not need to worry about getting sick because of poor conditions. This causes ease over the mind and therefore allows us to move forward in our place of work and in our life. Janitorial staff play a big role in the progression of the workplace and in our personal health.

What you do not know can cause you harm or possibly kill you. This is especially true when it comes to bloodborne pathogens. It is extremely important that all staff and cleaning personnel need to know about bloodborne pathogens and what to do when exposed.

Unfortunately, you cannot see bloodborne pathogens with the naked eye. In some cases, they can live on surfaces for days. HIV, HBV and HCV are examples bloodborne pathogens. Transmation of these and other bloodborne pathogens can be prevented by following precautions. When coming in contact with any bodily fluid make sure you take universal precautions. Treat every encounter as a possibility of the presence of bloodborne pathogen. Always wear PPE. Disposable gloves, mask, and gown is great for protection if worn properly.  Also, make sure you properly wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.

Also, properly dispose of any needles into designated sharps containers. This will cut down on the chances of transmission from a dirty needle. If your skin is punctured, wash the wound with soap and water and seek medical attention. Always follow up and take plan of care very seriously, because infections take time to show up in your system.

As you can see, it is important for everyone to know about bloodborne pathogens. You never know what blood is infected or not, an infection does not show right away, and virus can live on surfaces for days if not properly cleaned up. Fortunately, if universal precautions are taken and wash your hands, you can cut down on the chances of transmission.

The proper cleaning and sanitation of any and all healthcare facilities is incredibly important. So much that it could save numerous lives. Now, cleaning of healthcare facilities isn't an easy or simple task. There are many steps and protocols to follow in order to keep a healthcare facility clean and to keep viruses and bacteria from being spread from person to person, surface to surface, and room to room.

The most important steps to follow, though, is wearing the proper PPE and following proper hand hygiene. These two steps can significantly reduce the spread of germs and diseases from one room to the next and person to person. You may not realize just how easy it is to spread things around because you can't see the microorganisms with your naked eye, but they are always present unless you follow the proper protocols.

Being sure that you properly clean and sanitize a patient room is the next step in preventing the spread of HAI's. Approximately 1.7 million people contract HAI's every year with around 99,000 of those resulting in deaths. Staph infections being the leading pathogen that accounts for 84% of HAI's. If all facilities were to follow the proper protocol in cleaning and sanitization as well as wearing the proper PPE and hand hygiene the numbers could drop within the first year.
