Bloodborne pathogens pose a serious and significant health risk to anyone who comes into contact with them. Everyone should understand the risks associated with the cleaning and/or disposing of contaminated surfaces, articles of clothing, linens, and cleaning tools. This is most true for employees or workers that frequently come into contact with them. Training should be available to every employee and mandatory for anyone at risk.

Bloodborne pathogens like HIV and hepatitis B do not only exist within blood. They can exist within saliva, vomit, urine, and other bodily fluids. Proper procedures should always be followed when coming into contact with any suspecting bodily fluid. The best way to avoid exposure is to ensure you're wearing proper PPE or personal protective equipment and following the osha guidelines.

Proper education for all cleaning workers is the 1st step in protecting them and your business. The availability of proper fitting personal protective gear is a must. Masks, gloves, safety goggles, and at times full tyvek suits can, and should be worn depending on the situation. Education and protection are vital in keeping your work force safe and productive while keeping your clients satisfied.

The proper cleaning of healthcare facilities is important for many reasons. Proper cleaning of healthcare facilities primarily prevents pathogens from infecting the cleaner themselves, the staff that work at the facility and the patients that they care for. Improper cleaning practices could cause the spread of contagious illnesses and chronic disease.

By practicing the standards of infection control and following OSHAs precautions for bloodborne pathogens, the cleaner is taking an active role in keeping themselves and everyone else coming into contact with all surfaces within the environment safe and healthy. To find a cleaning company that meets certification standards, search the IJCSA service directory at: https://www.ijcsa.org/Janitorial-Service-Directory-Find-A-Janitorial-Service-JanitorialServices

Knowledge and understanding of bloodborne pathogens, the potential risks involved when coming into contact with contaminated materials and utilizing universal precautions when placed into situations where you will be handling contaminated materials are all vitally important.

By following universal precautions, you are not only preventing yourself from contracting an infectious disease, you are also minimizing or eliminating the risk for your clients and their clients from contracting an infectious disease. Cleaning service staff removing a hazard safely keep all parties safe.

Following universal precautions to prevent bloodborne pathogen exposure includes, but is not limited to: using the proper PPE for the situation, knowing what sanitization methods to use, knowing how to contain soiled items, always washing your hands and having reporting requirements and protocol in place in case of possible exposure.

Cleaning in the medical field, you tend to follow best practices when it comes to standard and enhanced infection control. Following these precautions keeps the cleaner safe, the staff safe and the patients safe.

When it comes to cleaning a residential, or non-medical commercial location; we should implement standard precautions to keep ourselves safe and our clients safe. The cleaner, in any environment,  should wash their hands, don personal protective equipment, and treat surfaces as though they are contaminated with potentially infectious pathogens.

In a medical setting, there may be signs present that warn the cleaner of the dangers associated with coming into contact with potentially infectious pathogens. In a residential or other non-medical commercial location, these warnings are not always present. Cleaners need to take precautions to keep themselves safe and healthy, no matter what environment they are in.

When cleaning residential and non-medical commercial buildings: cleaning staff should always wash their hands, wear appropriate PPE and should consider using a hospital grade disinfectant cleaner to protect everyone from pathogens that may be contained within the environment.

The harmful effects of using regular household chemicals.

The use of windex can cause, respiratory issues, skin irritations, an irritation of eyes, nose and throat. Pain in lungs, nausea, headache, coughing and increased breathing rate. Unlike the use of vinegar and water, it is an easy cleaner and works better than windex leaving windows and surfaces spotless.
The use of butyl cellosolve found in ( all purpose cleaners, abrasive cleaner) can cause liver and kidney damage , and also is a neurotoxin that can depress nervous system and cause issues. Instead we can use washing soda to clean any grease and not have any health issues.

Artificial fragrances can cause allergies, skin and eye irritations. Instead of using artificial regranted we can create natural one with furor peelings and herbs.

Amyl acetate a grease cutter , it is a neurotoxin that focuses in central nervous system and cause to depress. We can use instead some olive oil and lemon to polish without using toxic chemicals.

Chlorine can affect the body many ways it is very toxic it can cause respiratory problems and damaging the ozone of the earth. To avoid the use of chlorine we can use simple ingredients like baking soda lemon and, white vinegar to remove stains and clean and disinfect.

Earning the certification for green cleaning will greatly help me, when I open my own business for cleaning services. It will give confidence and trust with the customers and other businesses whom may be interested in our services due to the trust they would have on a company who has certifications for the job they do then to someone who doesn’t own any certifications.
Being certified also give me the owner of the company a more ease because I know I’m certified to do the job and I know I am doing the correct methods. Then doing something incorrect and or something non green.
Also green cleaning is a very good certification to get with all the contamination going on in the world it is a better way to clean,  it actually best to clean more greener than using all those toxic chemicals that can affect your health and the environment.

Think of your environment and health and chose a IJCSA green cleaning company and help the earth get a little less contaminated day by day.

Learning on how to handle bloodborne pathogens

Handling  labeled material's and disposal, also taking precautions on cleaning & disposal.  Handle contaminated laundry cautiously.  Laundry bags need to be  properly labeled color coded containers  if they are being transferred to another facility this also includes gloves and equipment.  Always wear protective equipment , never manually compress trash.  Never eat, drink or smoke or use any type of lip balm in areas that there could possibly be blood borne pathogen exposures.  Avoid spattering or splashing when cleaning up.  Never reuse Towels or Sponges.  Do not bend or recap contaminated needles.  If you think you were exposed to bloodborne pathogens contact your supervisor and or physician and watch for symptoms and when a exposure has happened the (Supervisor)  needs to keep records for 3 years after the exposure.   Have a written control expose plan and this plan needs to be updated at all times, reviewing the plan annually. Always decontaminate surfaces and or areas with disinfectants and always disinfect cleaning equipment and materials

    Always wash your hands properly.
