Bloodborne pathogens:  infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause disease and kill humans.

Cleaning technicians need to be educated on human bodily fluids as they can contain very infectious and deadly diseases known as pathogens. These pathogens include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). One should always assume that bodily fluids contain bloodborne pathogens and with proper training a cleaning tech can avoid contamination to themselves and others. Proper handling of waste material can keep you and others safe from these contaminants.

Knowing how to handle waste material by using absorbents, spatulas, and other mechanical tools to collect bodily fluids and reducing exposure by learning, knowing, and practicing safe handling techniques is imperative to the safety of the cleaning technician performing the work.

Understanding the need to wear Person Protection Equipment such as eye protection, gloves, face masks can save a life. Making sure not to splash, splatter, or spread the fluids can prevent accidental contamination to open mount nose or sores.  Cleaning technicians must be diligent in following these personal safety precautions to protect their person health as there are no second chances when it comes to deadly diseases.

Dispose of materials in proper containers, marked bags, and proper receptacles and do not manually compact, squeeze or over handle any means of disposal container this can keep the cleaning technicians and others who may encounter these containers safe.

Occupational injuries and illnesses are common problems in the housekeeping world.  Green Cleaning protects our workers against harmful substances, and we pass on the benefits to our customers as well.  This is why we are so excited about the IJCSA Green Cleaning Certification Program.

We have been raised thinking the “Clorox” and bleach smell means " truly clean".  We must educate people about the efficiency of green cleaning and the health value over conventional cleaning.  In my opinion, Green Cleaning should always be an option.  I don’t want to be responsible for harmful effects our company’s cleaning regimen will have on employees and customers.

Although, our mission to educate people is far from being done, it is much easier to implement a Green Cleaning Service nowadays.  Many studies have been published to show how toxic conventional products are unhealthy.

How do you promote your Green Cleaning Service without falling in the Greenwashing scheme?  Be honest about the products your use, be personal about your mission and back your claims with science.

In today's world, we are constantly surrounded by toxic contaminants. The most dangerous are known as Volatile Organic Compounds and Persistent Organic Pollutants. The EPA reports that VOCs are emitted by a wide range of consumer and industrial products, among them, everyday cleaning products.

These everyday cleaners are meant to facilitate our lives, but are, in fact, harming us. Unfortunately, we the consumers are the reason they are being manufactured. Organic chemicals are inexpensive to produce and are very effective, something very appealing to the mass production process.

Please note that VOCs are not ingredients themselves, rather, they are gases that are constantly being released from organic chemicals used in the manufacturing process. EPA studies indicate that people who clean using products containing organic chemicals can expose themselves and others to high pollutant levels. Even after you're done cleaning, elevated concentrations can persist in the air for hours.

The novelty of POPs is that they are highly stable organic compounds often used as disinfectants. POPs are a real problem because they persist in the environment, accumulate in human and animal fatty tissues, and are toxic to most forms of life.

Most everyday cleaning products contain POPs as their main ingredient and are found in household insecticides and moth repellants. According to the EPA, nearly every person on earth can be shown to have detectable levels of POPs.

There are also variants such as Persistent, Bio-accumulative, and Toxic pollutants that pose a risk to humans and wildlife ecosystems that make them horribly destructive to our planet and our health.

Overexposure to VOCs can cause adverse health conditions such as coughing, fever, muscle aches, and allergies. High levels of VOCs and POPs have been shown to cause cancer, birth defects, and even death. The use of products that emit VOCs and POPs is also at least in part responsible for many conditions such as Sick Building Syndrome, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, and Asthma.

Why then are they still being manufactured and sold to the public? The truth is that there are few regulations of these chemicals. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) only tests prescription drugs and consumable products. The EPA only investigates after there have been many complaints reported. Basically, if a product ever gets to a point where it warrants an investigation, it's likely too late. Interestingly enough, the EPA already lists most VOCs and POPs as Extremely Hazardous Substances (EHS), but unfortunately, chemical production continues largely unregulated.

To protect ourselves, we need to reduce or eliminate our exposure to these substances. Some of the most toxic are found in everyday products like all-purpose cleaners, oven cleaners, and fabric softeners.

These environmental poisons need to be replaced with non-toxic and environmentally safe counterparts, if not by the government, then by each and every one of us. For daily cleaning, baking soda and vinegar are wonderful natural alternatives that do a great job keeping things clean.

Some benefits of using green cleaning in my business will include providing a safe environment for customers. This means good health for the public, in your home and your work place. Did you know that there are over 62 dangerous chemicals found in the average home? This is not so good. Green Cleaning ensures a natural atmosphere in your home in turn you will have a safe environment also at home.

Green Cleaning products also disinfect just as good or better than your old fashioned cleaning products; destroying harmful bacterias like, E. Coli, Salmonella and Shigella Bacteria.

Eco Friendly/Green clean products are safe for pregnant or nursing women, children and pets.

Opting to use green cleaning products will not only reduce the risk of harming anyone in the home, it will help in reducing the harmful effects of toxic chemicals that get washed into the environment. They can be used with the confidence that the ingredients are easy to find when making at home, and the ingredients will not have any harmful effects on anyone.

Poor health in the United States has sparked the interest of many to try more eco friendly green clean products. Having the green clean option as part of my business could potentially be my greatest asset.

Bloodborne pathogens are a serious concern for cleaning employees and staff.  It’s important that all cleaning personnel understand what bloodborne pathogens are, what hazards they possess, how to prevent exposure and the procedures for post exposure.  Bloodborne pathogens include viruses like HBV, HCV, HIV and OPIMs.  These disease can be transferred through blood and bodily fluids.  It’s greatly important that cleaning employees and staff understand the importance of these hazards.

OSHA has created bloodborne pathogen standards that guides employers on how to implement control measures, universal precautions, hazard communication and recordkeeping.  Work practices should be explained to the employees and enforcement of the procedures should be a top priority.  Understanding the importance of using PPE, disinfectants and the post-exposure steps are critical in those working in facilities that have possible contact with bloodborne pathogens.

Employers must implements a safety program where the staff and employees understand and follow the rules for working with bloodborne pathogens.  They must wear the proper PPE, use the appropriate cleaning products and equipment when working in these facilities.  The importance of understanding bloodborne pathogens is to enforce precautionary measures to prevent exposure.
