Learning about the safety of bloodborne pathogens is an integral part of any cleaners training. Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms found in human blood. The most common of these and HPV and HIV, both of which are lifelong illness’ if contracted. Each cleaner must know the safety protocols of having proper PPE as well as the Universal Standard of removing, cleaning and disinfecting, and disposal of contaminated items. Employees should also be up to date on their companies exposure plan, and any necessary vaccines, before entering a work place where exposure to bloodborne pathogens is present.

Why is it important to know about bloodborne pathogens, as a cleaning person?

It can be hard to keep in mind dangers that we cannot see & in our day to day lives we tend to forget such unsightly dangers. Bloodborne pathogens (BBP) can be all over the place & in areas we least expect & according to the Health and Safety Institute, some BBP can live in dried blood up to 7 days or more.

It is very important to know about all personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, protective eyewear, face masks, etc. When used properly PPE can greatly reduce your exposure to BBP & will ultimately help prevent the spread of certain diseases, such as Hep B, Hep C & HIV. Those are just a fraction of many BBP's out there.

It's very important for cleaning employees to know about BBP simply because, ANYONE exposed to them are at risk in coming in contact with potential infectious microorganisms that can cause serious disease in humans & we are all responsible for protecting ourselves.

In workplace or jobs , bloodborne pathogens, or BBPs, can be spread among coworkers through a number of different ways. They can be transferred through blood or other infectious bodily fluids touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. They can spread through cuts, abrasions, rashes, burns, or paper cuts of the skin. If employee's and staff  have knowledge about BBP they can help stop the spread of it

Having knowledge about BBP's also help tp prevent, preventable accident's. When if you ever have to clean a Medical center you and your employees will know how to  handle used needles, blood, or even bodily fluids.

With the knowledge and the proper PPE especially during this time of this pandemic. Having knowledge, and following produce can and will help tremendously.

Customer service is a vital part to most business, especially businesses of service.  In the cleaning industry, the customer service delivered to the client is as important as the cleaning itself.  When problems occur, (which is almost inevitable), there are some good practices to keep in mind.

When a client communicates a complaint, they need to be heard.  If dealing with a client in person, it is important to smile, make eye contact, and comment appropriately back to the customer to let them know you heard them and empathize with them.  After this acknowledgement, a solution must be provided.  Be sure the client is clear on what steps are being taken to correct the issue.  Finally, after these steps have been taken, follow up.

Most cleaning companies practice at least a few of these steps.  Few execute them all.  One company based in DFW that prides itself on excellent customer service is Fernic Building Solution.  Their information can be found here:

What would our world look like if we did not have janitors and janitorial staff to help clean it up? It would be extremely dirty and filthy. Having cleaning staff that takes pride in their work and does a good job cleaning is important to our daily lives.

I was an RN in an hospital for 10yrs. I saw first hand the repercussions of not having enough janitorial staff towards the end of my hospital career. Unfortunately, the deep cleaning job they would do to keep bacteria and viruses that endanger to us, especially drug resistance in so many of these healthcare related infections. These infections were much fewer when we there was plenty of janitorial and commercial cleaning staff and they took pride in the job they did to keep us all safe.

Janitors, housekeepers, commercial and janitorial staff are the foundation of our world. By keeping the environment clean, sanitized and disinfectant-ed to stop these dangerous pathogens in their tracks and keeping them from being spread. These "superstars" as I call them because working in a dirty environment can make anyone turn their nose up. Janitors and commercial cleaners are also helping keep this Covid-19 pandemic in halt by taking on these dangerous areas to clean to keep this virus from spreading. We need to thank warriors for their selflessness and integrity to take on such a thankless job!

I Marquesa Campbell at London Marie Cleaning Company  know In this day and age, it has become very important for people to do as much as they can to protect the environment. In the past, people mostly concentrated on issues such as the use of economical cars and regulation of industrial waste production in a bid to keep the environment clean.

However, you can have a greener environment by doing even more basic things. For instance, if you often call someone to do housekeeping for you, you can use this opportunity to do less damage to the environment.

After taking this course at IJCSA we will never take short cuts, and take green cleaning a lot more serious. And do our part.

As an owner of a Commercial Cleaning company that specializes in Medical Facilities this training is invaluable to the health and wellness of our employees. I believe knowledge is power, and the possibilities that they may come in contact with these concerns they should be educated.

Before owning my Commercial Cleaning company, I of course worked for others. And to do my job effectively, I needed the right tools as well the support/knowledge of every aspect of my position. By continuing education such as this is not only effective for the employee but also the employer.

Thank you providing this information and for helping me to become an even better employer.

The janitorial staff is essential to our daily lives as we provide a safe and clean environment to all. We are specialist at prevention and preservation. We are the force behind the idolized heroes of the word.

Everyday we risk our lives to secure yours. We don’t just clean and go home. When we clean we are preventing exposure of bloodborne pathogens, helping reduce the fluctuation in allergies and up keeping the place safe. Including but not limited to other duties such as securing the buildings, patrolling areas throughout the day which can vary depending on the job location.

There are different types of cleaning we have to do like medical, construction, mold, carpet etc. So while it seems we just wipe a table & mirror off with a slap on the back it isn’t just that. Janitors importance in everyday life is often overseen because others aren’t aware of  the importance of our position. You need to get the proper training and certification to execute. Look no further IJCSA can take care of you no matter if you’re a veteran or a newbie.

It is very important that my team understands that bloodborne pathogens are pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and can cause disease in humans.  Most exposure occurs when in contact with the nose, mouth, and breaks in the skin.

My team needs to protect themselves by understanding universal precautions and that blood and certain bodily fluids from all patients be considered potentially infectious.  They need to follow proper protective practices when handling all cleanups.

As a company, i need to create an environment where my employees feel safe and understand everything they need to know about bloodborne pathogens.  I will create a written exposure control plan to help protect them.  I will provide proper personal protective equipment, proper cleaning and disinfecting solutions, and containers to ensure the safety of my team.  They need to be safe since they are the backbone of my company.
