Bloodborne Pathogens and Work Place Safety.

It is important for cleaning employees and staff to have knowledge of bloodborne pathogens. This knowledge will protect individuals from work place exposure to blood or other possibly infectious materials. Bloodborne pathogens can be spread if the proper guidelines aren’t followed.

Bloodborne pathogens are diseases present in the blood and body fluids. These body fluids include saliva, vomit, urine, semen etc., which can infect and cause diseases in humans. The most known of these are Human Immunodeficiency Virus also known as HIV, AIDS, and the Hepatitis B virus.

To reduce or eliminate the dangers of workplace exposure to bloodborne pathogens, an employer must put an exposure control plan into action. Employees should know how and where to store used needles. Blood and body fluid spills should be treated as if they are infectious. Be sure to wear appropriate personal protective equipment when cleaning up spills. By not following the proper clean up guidelines a person is at risk of contracting diseases and possible death.

Eco-Cleanology offered Green Cleaning from day one but we are now Green Cleaning Certified through IJCSA (International Janitorial Cleaning Services Association)  Eco-friendly cleaning services always focus on cleaning products that should be used (or not used), but eco-cleaning involves much more than that. A complete Green Cleaning program requires proper techniques and tools to truly impact on health and the environment. Our employees are trained! Our cleaning technicians receive documents to study and a practical exam.  They learn about the relation between dirt and green cleaning compounds and how they react to each other.\

We are honest about our service.  We only offer eco-cleaning.  We are not interested in propagating toxic chemicals in the air.  This was always our mission.

Many cleaning products and chemicals that are not green certified contain toxic ingredients that can be harmful to your health and the environment. The purpose of green cleaning products and methods is to protect and promote health, while also reducing the negative effects on the environment. When you use many cleaning products, “harmful chemicals are being released into the environment,” says Leslie Reichert, author of “Joy of Green Cleaning”. Not great for you and the people around you to breathe in.

Green cleaning products help decrease harmful air and water pollution, ozone depletion, and global climate change because green cleaning products do not include toxic chemicals that regular cleaining products do.All-natural green cleaning has been shown to reduce health problems that are associated with allergens, chemical sensitivities and contaminants. This includes mold and bacteria. Studies have shown that spraying a household cleaner just once a week increases a persons chance of getting asthma.

Using green products that are all-natural are known to increase worker satisfaction, improve employee morale, reduce absenteeism, promote productivity and efficiency. Green cleaning methods Improve training programs by stressing safety and cleaning procedures. This reduces injuries to custodial staff and Worker’s Compensation Claims.

Other benefits of using Eco-Friendly cleaning methods include reducing chemical consumption and the number of chemicals needed. Promoting better inventory management of supplies and equipment, resulting in more efficient and better-planned procurement of goods. Also, using green cleaning products won’t damage surfaces over time like traditional cleaners can.

There are many benefits of using natural green products versus everyday cleaning products. It’s no wonder more and more people are turning to Green Certified cleaning products and eco-friendly cleaning methods.      One of the most important benefits of implementing green cleaning solutions and practices into my company has been the health of myself and my employees.

Prior to using non-toxic alternatives, we were all occasionally ill from over exposure to chemicals in our cleaning products. Some products would make a few cough uncontrollably and wouldn't bother others. Chlorine cleaners burned our eyes and we literally had to leave the room and get some "air'.

After changing our practices, the business bonus benefit began. Through marketing I have discovered that there are large parts of our community that value all of the aspects of a company that strives to have a minimal negative impact on our world. Word of mouth referrals have been impressive.

When I researched green cleaning solutions, I was afraid that I just couldn't afford to go Green. I came across Ecosense by Melaleuca at a local farmers market. I was doubly blessed when these products turned out to be very effective and 1/5th the cost of grocery store brands.

If you wish to "Go Green', you can afford it, you can implement it. It just takes research and effort. Network with others. There is a wealth of knowledge out there.

Did you know that you can be exposed to HIV & HBV in the custodial/ janitorial positions in the work field? You can be exposed to these bloodborne pathogens from cleaning up after vomit, cuts, nose bleeds and even diarrhea for example. Bloodborne pathogens are pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood that can cause diseases in other humans. If proper precautions are not taken you can expose yourself and others to these deadly bloodborne pathogen viruses.

With Knowing that occupational exposure to the HIV & HBV bloodborne pathogens could mean the difference between life and death, proper precautions must be in place. Training, personal protective equipment (PPE), disinfectants, tools and safe cleaning practices can help keep others & yourself from being exposed to these bloodborne pathogens. Employers must provide training, PPE and vaccinations prior to any assignment at no cost to the employee.  As well as, a written exposure control plan to follow to ensure the safety for everyone involved.

Bloodborne pathogens is very dangerous if proper techniques and procedures are not taken. Knowledge, training and proper equipment is the tools you need to create a safe working environment. When considering "cleaning green", the health of myself and my employees was one of my major concerns over using traditional, harmful cleaners. We use Ecosense by Melaleuca "The Wellness Company". These essential oil, botanical cleaners are very effective, non-poisonous with zero VOCs. We use steam mops to SANITIZE floors with super heated, ordinary water. We also use SterileAire Triple HEPA filtered vacuums that even trap larger bacteria and viruses along with mites, dander and dust. In our efforts, the homes and businesses that we clean are healthier for the inhabitants, healthier for my employees and have less of a harmful impact on our Earth than traditional cleaning.

As a small business owner in beautiful Charlotte, North Carolina I think it is imperative to our community to offer my clients a "green" alternative to meet a growing demand from the areas client base.  We are a growing metropolis and have managed to build in parks, streams and natural areas into our sprawling city.  Once folks viewed the green movement as a fad, but as many studies of harmful additives corporations are including in their household and industrial cleaners come out, the need to go green is more real than ever.  We as an industry can help spread the benefits of a green cleaning program.

Not every business is ready to jump on board however as my dentist explained to me during a recent visit.  He told me that in his profession there is an extreme need to have effective products and that unless a "green' alternative product can offer him a minimum of 5 years of successful testing backed by major healthcare monitoring agencies that he has no interest in them.  For him, the risks are too high and he appreciates the peace of mind that the industry standards give him.  He did state however that with those 5 years of studies and at a competitive price he would like to implement those products that give him the option of being more green.

My business provides our largest client a chance to mix in the use of vinegar and less caustic chemicals but still keep other non green products available in the rotation for certain jobs as well.  I believe that the key to implementing my green program will be communication to my clients.  When I make a listing of chemicals I plan on using on their property I also have a separate column that lists a green alternative to that chemical when available, leaving the choice to the consumer and ultimately allowing the business owner to say they made a great choice, not only in the choice of cleaning products, but with the business that is providing them with the choice.

In general, I am very happy to provide my accounts with a chance to be a better member of the community.  When I educate my clients as to the risks of using most over the counter cleaners vs. their natural alternatives I feel that I have leveled the playing field a bit by giving them information that they don't get in the big corporation's hyped up TV ads.
