This isn't an intervention for those poor drinking habits, although there is scrutiny of alcohol. There are a few things you may ponder when told an increased risk of cancer is associated with the manufacturing of Isopropyl Alcohol. Can this affect me? Maybe you remember reading the name on different ingredient lists (also called propanol, isopropanol rubbing alcohol.)

Alcohol Isopropyl is a petrochemical. Through skin exposure some people react with signs of redness, itching, and/or rashes. The petroleum based chemical, like other solvents, has displayed brain and/or nerve damage with repeated exposure. Some study shows buildup promotes illness in the body. The IJCSA Green Certification course offers the suggestion to replace Isopropyl Alcohol with ethanol or 100 proof alcohol in solution with water. A place where harm can be limited is important in the Mixology process--how products are manufactured and mixed.

Many more hazardous chemicals exist in the cleaning industry. Remembering toxins may be difficult for most. Common names to avoid are Chlorine, Ammonia, and Flouride. Chlorine and Ammonia are both listed on the EPA's Community-Right-to-Know list as toxic chemicals. Author and Doctor John Yiammouyiannis estimates between 30,000 and 50,000 people die from fluoride poisoning each year. Found in drinking water, an acceptable concentration of 1 ppm isnt farm from 2 ppm which starts health risks.

In short, everyday cleaning products are assembled with toxins. Harsh toxins exist in places you may not expect. Harmful effects of using everyday cleaning products can involve irritation to the eyes, mouth, nose, throat, and skin. Additional complications may cause eye damage, lightheadedness, confusion, memory loss, headaches, and more. Possibly some of the most important means of damage are VOCs. Volatile organic compounds are the solvents and other compounds which evaporate into the air and help supply the formation of smog.

Compared to popular everyday cleaning brands, natural green products hold much more value. There is potential to reverse the harmful effects of everyday cleaning chemicals with natural green ones. Common household ingredients for natural cleaning can be lemon juice, conventional and electrolyzed water, borax, vinegar, salt, mineral oil, baking soda, washing soda, vegetable based soap, and plants with high saponin levels. Using eco-friendly products over name brands yields health benefits, increased morale, improved productivity, cost savings, improved community relations, and environmental gain.                 Janitorial employees need training in bloodborne pathogens prevention because as they clean various buildings from business offices to medical offices there is always potential to being exposed to bloodborne pathogens from accidental bodily fluid spills or needles or other similar medical devices that are not properly disposed of in biohazard bins.  Janitorial employees need to be prepared to prevent exposure and also what to do should they be exposed.

Training in how to recognize a potential hazard and how to properly handle said hazard should be provided by the employer to the employee.  Should an employee encounter a needle they should be wearing appropriate medical equipment and should handle the needle carefully and dispose of in a proper sharps bin that is labeled and has a lid.  Proper personal preventative equipment can include masks, gloves, gowns, face shields and/ or protective eyewear.   Those who are at a higher risk of exposure can also consider vaccinations to help reduce risk of exposure.

Employers should have a plan on how to respond to potential exposure and should keep record of any needle sticks (sharps injury log) or exposure and medical records associated with at work exposure.  Should an employee get stuck by a needle or have a pathogen enter thru broken skin, mouth, nose, or eyes needs to quickly wash out the pathogen with water (soap and water for skin) and seek medical attention.  After handling any item that is used to clean up a spill should be properly disposed of as well as protective equipment and hands should be washed with soap and water before putting on new protective equipment and continuing with assigned tasks.

With proper training in prevention and response the risk of contracting bloodborne illnesses while providing janitorial services can be greatly reduced.  With knowledge attained from training a person is able to make better decisions while at work to prevent themselves and others from exposure.

Bloodborne pathogens are incredibly dangerous and having a knowledgeable and trained staff is extremely important in preventing the spread of them.  Having trained employees is priceless, the smallest of mistakes or oversight could have life long effects when it comes to proper cleaning techniques and disposal of contaminated material.

Most anyone can clean up a spill or bodily fluid accident and have the area look clean again but having the knowledge to actually remove any health risks by properly disinfecting, protecting yourself during the clean up and knowing the steps to take to prevent spreading any contamination are very important.  If an employee without the knowledge and training were to mop an infected area and not disinfect the equipment being used and then used it elsewhere they would put themselves and everyone that comes into contact with those areas at risk.

Taking the approach that all bodily fluids are contaminated takes any guess work out of the equation and creates a safe and clean environment for everyone. Proper training makes you and your company an asset to any other company and is worth the investment.

    Why Risk Bloodborne Pathogens?

The training for cleaning and proper disposal to prevent the spread of biological contamination, disease, and bloodborne pathogens is of the highest importance. I think everyone from daycare workers to food industry workers as well as every other job in-between should be given the right training and tools to protect not just themselves but everyone in return. The high risk of serious health issues from bloodborne pathogens is not just for medical field professionals. Every day workers doing what most people consider low risk jobs like cleaning are in reality highest on the list for possible exposure. If given the opportunity to gain the knowledge to save your life or another’s by having the proper skills to deal with a situation in any job it’s not one you should pass on lightly, if at all.

Most work places regularly train on the basic need to know regulations or mandates only because it’s required by law but don’t always take the next step toward making their work place a safer or cleaner environment. I encourage you in whatever position you work to take the next step and get the talk started about how you need to do more or train more to prevent workplace injury, contamination and or infections. Talk to your manager or to your fellow managers about the importance of training and having certified employees in this essential topic. People and animals are a part of everyday life and thus so is the threat of bloodborne pathogens. Knowing how real and present the risks are and how to handle them could be the next step to making your work place a great place to work.

Placing a tissue in the garbage bin that you found on the ground isn’t something that someone would think too much about, you’re cleaning up the environment right? But doing that simple act with your bare hands could be the spread of your worst years to come. Always using the proper Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E. = gloves, masks, goggles, and attire) and body substance isolation (B.S.I.) the practice of isolating all body substances (blood, urine, feces, mucus, etc.) is an everyday shielding step to insuring that you can cut your risks down considerably. Always look at the bigger picture if you don’t know what’s on it you don’t want it on you. H.I.V. and H.B.V. are some of the biggest most talked about issues when discussing bloodborne pathogens but there are numerous other reasons to learning proper cleaning technique and using the right cleaners for the job. The flu or Influenza killed about 80,000 people in the 2017-2018 season, according to figures released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by far some of the worst numbers in current times. Less commonly know is Brucellosis a disease caused by bacteria, these bacteria can infect both humans and animals. Brucellosis is often spread when people or animals eat contaminated food, raw meats/ blood, or unpasteurized milks. Symptoms may include high fever, extreme Headaches, joint pain and fatigue. The infection can usually be treated successfully with antibiotics but treatment and symptoms can last several weeks too many months, even years. Whatever the contaminants are you could be out of work for a while or a whole life. Why risk it when you can change your chances. Better cleaning, being aware, taking better self-care with P.P.E. can make a world of difference for your work place, your home, and your life.

Be smart, be healthy, and be clean.

In recent times Green Cleaning has emerged as a globally accepted movement which employs effective cleaning that incorporates solutions which make considerations for both human and environmental health and protection. It seeks to thoroughly address these with the continuous use of green products, equipment, tools and practices.
