The Dyson Cyclone V10 cord-free vacuum that Dyson unveiled today at an event in New York is a new milestone for the company’s strong line of battery-powered vacuums. In fact, it spells the end for plug-in models, even for holdouts who’ve been reluctant to ditch their big bulky continuous power versions.
Dyson’s Cyclone V10 has Dyson’s most advanced digital motor yet. In a briefing, Dyson showed me the motor and how it compares to its previous generation version. I’m no electric motor engineer, but I can say that it’s significantly smaller and lighter (made possible using some ceramic in place of metal in its construction) and it’s a something that will blow away the existing models in terms of performance.

Diverse Facility Solutions, a firm owned by Mark Wright, was awarded a $12.9 million contract to clean the David R. Lee Animal Care Center, the 911 and 311 non-emergency centers, the Goldblatt’s building, West Town library, and the Chicago Fire Academy. The company made $35 million in 2017, has 900 employees and was ranked 82nd on the BE 100s, a listing of the nation’s largest black businesses.
Jimmie Daniel’s Total Facility Maintenance received a $9.9 million contract to clean a group of buildings that includes the public safety headquarters.
While nonblack-owned ABM Janitorial gets $68.3 million, the company will be giving 35% of its work to Diverse Facility Solutions and 10% to We’re Cleaning Inc., a company owned by Yvonne McGinnis, in order to fulfill its minority “set-aside” rule.

A Cameron Parish cleaning crew made an unpleasant discovery today.
Sheriff Ron Johnson said one of his crews found a head in a plastic bag on the side of La. 27 in the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge.
The head was decomposed, and identification of the victim has been turned over to the coroner, he said. Investigators believe it has been out there months, not years, but a final determination will be made by the coroner, he said.
Deputies searched the area, as well as the surrounding marsh, but no other body parts were found, he said.
We're following this story and will post additional details as they become available.

A janitor is being hailed as a hero for diverting terrified students away from the teen who carried out one of the deadliest school shootings in US history.
As a fire alarm sounded and bullets began to ring out at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Wednesday afternoon, some students fled from their classrooms into the hallway – unknowingly into the path of AR-15-wielding, 19-year-old madman Nikolas Cruz.
“After I started running with the people, I realized that wasn’t the best choice because there was a janitor that thank God stopped me and all of my fellow students from going in that direction, towards the shooter,” school senior David Hogg told ABC 13.

LOS ANGELES >> Thousands of Los Angeles Unified School District workers represented by the Service Employees International Union will decide next month whether to authorize the union to call a strike in the midst of contract talks.
Taking part in the strike authorization vote will be district cafeteria workers, custodians, bus drivers, special education assistants and other workers represented by SEIU Local 99, which has accused the district of unfair labor practices “and bad faith bargaining.”
The vote is scheduled to take place March 12-24. Union officials said if the workers authorize a strike, a walkout could potentially occur during the current school year.

Oregon was among the first states to pass a law designed to prevent wage theft and sexual harassment in the janitorial industry, but the regulations that took effect this year are getting a second look from lawmakers.
“Our initial concern was we were capturing far too many people under this,” said Rep. Andrea Salinas, D-Lake Oswego, co-sponsor of a corrective bill that’s quickly working its way through the Legislature. “They had included individual employees in the licensing requirement. Then, it was capturing housekeepers. A lot of my colleagues across the state were really nervous about that.”

A DIA official told the council Tuesday that after this and other previous bids have drawn protests, the airport plans to seek an outside review of its bid process and rules with an eye on increasing transparency and efficiency. Some protests have centered on DIA’s lengthy final negotiations with winning bidders, leaving losing companies in the dark for months about the outcome.
“I understand that we don’t win every bid. Nor do we expect to,” said Scott Murray of Triangle Services, which was among the bidders not selected for the janitorial contract, during a public comment session Tuesday. “What we do expect is a transparent process that is fair to all the bidders.”

The study found that women responsible for cleaning at home or professionally suffered a more rapid decline than women who were not responsible for cleaning. The same trend was not observed in men, however. The authors did not offer a reason for this gender difference, though there were fewer men than women in the study and a smaller percentage of those men engaged in “occupational cleaning.”

Questions are emerging about the performance of a city contractor that has provided Denver airport janitorial services for decades, just as it’s set to win a $115 million contract.
City Councilman Kevin Flynn, who received a copy of the protest letter filed by a losing bidder last week, on Monday night triggered a one-week delay in the council’s consideration of the maximum five-year contract with ISS Facility Services. Council rules allow any council member to initiate a one-time delay of a contract, and ISS’s deal will be back at the council for a vote Feb. 20.
