In today’s marketplace, clients are more informed than ever about what goes into the products used in their spaces. For CARM Facility Services, LLC, pursuing IJCSA Green Cleaning Certification is not just a credential — it’s a commitment. Being green cleaning certified signals to every client, from medical offices to daycares to faith-based organizations, that we take their health and the health of the environment seriously. It sets CARM apart in a competitive industry where trust and professionalism are everything.

Green cleaning certification equips cleaning professionals with the knowledge to identify and eliminate harmful chemicals from their service programs. Many conventional cleaning products contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), harsh disinfectants, and synthetic fragrances that can trigger respiratory issues, skin irritation, and long-term health complications — especially in vulnerable populations like children and immunocompromised patients. By replacing these products with EPA Safer Choice-certified, biodegradable, and non-toxic alternatives, CARM is actively protecting the people in every building we service. The IJCSA Green Cleaning Directory makes it easier for clients seeking responsible, eco-conscious providers to find certified companies like ours.

Beyond client health, green cleaning practices protect our team members as well. Cleaning technicians are the most frequently exposed to chemical products, and reducing that exposure through certified green cleaning protocols directly improves worker safety and long-term wellbeing. It also reduces our environmental footprint — fewer harsh chemicals entering waterways, less plastic waste, and lower VOC emissions all contribute to a cleaner, healthier world beyond the walls of any one building.

CARM Facility Services is proud to build our business on the foundation of green cleaning principles. As we grow our presence in medical, dental, childcare, and institutional markets, IJCSA Green Cleaning Certification gives us the credibility and the knowledge to back up every promise we make to our clients. We encourage anyone searching for a trustworthy, environmentally responsible cleaning service to visit the IJCSA Green Cleaning Service Directory and choose a certified provider they can count on.

For cleaning professionals, the workplace holds hazards that aren't always visible to the naked eye. Bloodborne pathogens — infectious microorganisms found in human blood and certain bodily fluids, including Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV — can be present on surfaces that appear perfectly clean. Whether servicing a dental office, a school, a restroom, or a commercial building, cleaning staff encounter situations daily where the risk of exposure is real. Understanding what these pathogens are and how they spread is the first line of defense against a potentially life-altering workplace injury.

OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) exists precisely because this risk is taken seriously at the federal level. Employers are required to provide training, proper personal protective equipment, and documented exposure control plans for any worker who may face occupational exposure. But compliance is only part of the picture. A well-trained cleaning technician knows never to handle a discarded sharp with bare hands, understands which disinfectants are appropriate for blood spills, and knows exactly what steps to take if an exposure incident occurs. That knowledge doesn't just protect the employee — it protects every person who enters the facility afterward.

Ultimately, investing in bloodborne pathogen training is an investment in professionalism. Cleaning staff who are properly educated work with greater confidence, respond correctly under pressure, and carry a genuine sense of the public health responsibility their role holds. For any cleaning company serious about quality, this training isn't a formality — it's a foundation.

It is essential that all supervisors, managers, owners, and employees understand and adhere to the universal precautions for bloodborne pathogens established by the CDC.  These precautions exist to reduce or eliminate the risk of being exposed to harmful and possibly fatal bloodborne pathogens.  By treating ALL blood and bodily fluids as potentially infectious, one removes doubt and confusion about cleaning protocols.

In the above paragraph I included supervisors, managers, and owners in the knowledge pool for safe cleaning protocols and practices.  This is because the supervisors, managers, and owners are responsible for developing the training materials and procedures to ensure the safety of the employees and others.  Additionally, since employees may reach out to a supervisor if they are unsure of how to safely and properly clean, disinfect, and sanitize areas, the supervisor must serve as an escalation point and a knowledge expert.

Ensuring a safe work environment, without accidents, is beneficial for all parties.  Employees remain safe.  Owners of cleaning services remain free from litigation, fines, and potential lawsuits.  Finally, customers can benefit from knowing that their facilities are decontaminated and cleaned properly for their customers to enjoy.

The Importance of Educating Cleaning Staff About Bloodborne Pathogens

As a new business owner in the professional cleaning industry, ensuring the safety and well-being of employees and clients is a top priority. One critical area often overlooked is the knowledge and training surrounding bloodborne pathogens. These are infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause diseases such as Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). For cleaning staff, who may come into contact with blood or bodily fluids during their duties, understanding the risks and proper protocols is essential not only for their health but also for maintaining a safe work environment.

Providing comprehensive training on bloodborne pathogens equips employees with the tools to handle potentially hazardous situations safely and effectively. This includes recognizing exposure risks, using personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly, and following proper cleanup and disposal procedures. By educating staff on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and best practices, we not only comply with legal requirements but also foster a culture of responsibility and professionalism within our company. Employees who feel confident in their knowledge and skills are more likely to perform their jobs effectively, reducing the risk of accidental exposure or contamination.

For our clients, hiring a cleaning company that prioritizes safety and hygiene sends a strong message of care and professionalism. When staff are trained to handle bloodborne pathogens, they can manage unexpected situations, like minor injuries or medical emergencies, with competence and care. This not only enhances the reputation of our cleaning business but also builds trust with clients who value health and safety. As a new owner, investing in this training early sets the foundation for a successful, ethical, and safety-conscious company that stands out in the industry.

Implementing a solid carpet-cleaning program across Broward County Public Schools starts with a smart, realistic schedule aligned with the school calendar. The first step is mapping out the high-traffic zones, such as busy elementary classrooms, media centers, and front offices, that take the heaviest beating from daily foot traffic. To avoid disrupting learning, deep cleaning should be scheduled during major school breaks, such as summer, winter, and spring holidays, while low-moisture encapsulation cleaning can be used on regular weekends for quick drying. Daily, custodial teams need a clear system for heavy-duty vacuuming and immediate spill cleanup, using certified, eco-friendly, green cleaning products to keep harsh chemicals and fumes away from growing kids. This is critical because excessive or improper use of cleaning chemicals can severely compromise indoor air quality in schools and cause acute respiratory symptoms (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency [EPA], 2021).

Bringing in certified IJCSA (International Janitorial Cleaning Services Association) members to handle this makes a massive difference in how clean and healthy schools stay. These professionals are trained in the real science of cleaning, meaning they know exactly how to safely lift stubborn stains and extract deeply embedded allergens rather than just masking them. Professional hot-water extraction methods can reduce surface dust-mite and pet-allergen levels in carpets by over 90% (Arbes et al., 2003). By thoroughly removing dust mites, pollen, and bacteria, they drastically improve indoor air quality, which directly helps reduce student absences due to asthma and allergies, health issues that are a leading cause of school absenteeism (EPA, 2023). Plus, because IJCSA professionals use proper extraction techniques that won't leave carpets soaking wet, they prevent dangerous mold growth and stretch the lifespan of the district's carpets, saving taxpayers money in the long run.
