Do you know the affects that the ingredients in your favorite commercial brands of cleaning solutions can have on your health? Many solvents and petroleum-based chemicals found in cleaning products like degreasers have been shown to affect things such as sleep, memory, concentration, and even cause personality changes. Not only that, but sodium hypochlorite (household bleach) that many people use to clean areas of their home is not only toxic to human health, but it also damages aquatic life and wildlife as it escapes into the environment through water treatment plants and individual residential sewer systems.

When searching for a professional cleaning service for your home or commercial facility that truly cares for your health and the environment, partnering with IJSCA members that offer green cleaning services is the way to go. IJSCA green cleaning members don't just care, they take action to protect your health and the environment by using natural cleaners and reusable cleaning products like bottles and cloths. Not using single-use cloths and spray bottles reduces the amount of waste that goes to the landfill and can take hundreds of years to degrade. Using natural cleaning solutions greatly reduces the risk of adverse reactions, is safe to use around pets and children, and doesn't leave your home or business smelling like a hotel pool.

As a cleaning professional, we can be placed into situations where we are exposed to bloodborne pathogens. It’s important to know how to protect yourself and your employees to prevent exposure. Once exposed, you are subject to become infected with Hepatitis B and/or HIV as just some examples.

Hospital workers are not the only individuals who are at risk of exposure. Anyone who cleans up bodily fluids such as vomit, blood, or saliva or does laundry is at risk of exposure due to hazardous materials that may be in the covers or on the clothes. Most exposures is through contact of the mucus membranes in the nose or mouth or through breaks in the skin.

It is very important to follow universal precautions. One precaution is to wear protective gear at all times when cleaning and to assume all bodily fluids are infected. It’s also wise practice to wash your heads before touching your face, smoking, eating/drinking, or applying lip balm. It’s important to have a system in place such as color coding or labeling laundry. It’s your job to clean the area properly so that no one else will be exposed. Never manually smash down trash. Avoid splashing and splattering while cleaning. Dispose of all PPE in properly marked containers. Disinfect any equipment used to clean the area. Again, wash your hands thoroughly.

If you feel you have been exposed, contact your supervisor and your doctor. Be sure to pay attention to your body and check for any symptoms for the infections.

Many commonly used cleaning chemicals pose serious health risks to both you and your loved ones. A responsible cleaning company should be committed to safeguarding your health and the environment by offering natural green cleaning products and services that are free from harmful chemicals. Providing this as an option gives customers the control to understand what is being used in their homes and how it effects the world around them.

Traditional cleaning chemicals often contain toxic ingredients such as ammonia, chlorine, and phthalates, which can have adverse effects on respiratory health, skin irritation, and even contribute to long-term health issues like asthma and allergies. Moreover, these chemicals release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air, leading to indoor air pollution and exacerbating respiratory problems. By switching to natural green products, you can eliminate these risks and create a safer, healthier environment for your family or employees.

Green cleaning products harness the power of natural ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils to effectively clean and disinfect without the need for harsh chemicals. These eco-friendly alternatives not only provide a thorough clean but also leave behind a fresh, natural scent, rather than the artificial fragrances found in many conventional cleaning products. By removing chemical odors you can still maintain a clean, refreshing environment that promotes well-being and peace of mind.

In addition to protecting your health, choosing green cleaning products also benefits the environment. Traditional cleaning chemicals contribute to water and air pollution, harm aquatic life, and deplete natural resources. By opting for natural green alternatives, you can reduce your carbon footprint and minimize your impact on the planet. One small choice can promote a cleaner, more sustainable future for generations to come.

By utilizing a company from the IJCSA's Green Cleaning Directory, you not only gain access to high-quality green cleaning products and services but also join a community of like-minded individuals committed to making a positive difference. Training provided through the IJCSA shows dedication to environmental responsibility and a commitment to exceed your expectations with every clean. Make the switch to green cleaning today and experience the difference it can make for your health, your home, and the world around you.
