Cleaning employees and staff may encounter situations involved with exposure to blood and/or bodily fluids. Removing trash like used syringes, bloody laundry contact, and cleaning vomit are all tasks connected to bloodborne pathogens. These pathogenic microorganisms are present in human blood and can cause diseases in humans. Hepatitis B (HBV-available at no cost for employees) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are only a few examples of bloodborne pathogens.

Precautions against bloodborne pathogens in the workplace should be used to avoid illness and even death. Protective equipment can assist with safety. The goal is not only to guard thyself but equally or more importantly shield the safety, health, and lives of others. Reviewing annual updated exposure plans can further protection. Reducing the risk of bloodborne pathogen contact provides a safer environment for everyone.

Exposure? First you'll want to contact your supervisor right away. They will have specific instructions for the procedure. For the record, OSHA requires records from the employer of the exposure incident, for at least 3 years. Your physician should be notified as well. It important to watch your health and take note of any symptoms or changes.

So you have decided to go the Green Way?  Congratulations! You are now on the way to making the difference for your health, your family's health, your clients' health, and to Mother Earth's health!

As you search for the company that is going to help you with your commitment to Green cleaning, there are a few things to keep in mind.  First, not every company that claims to be "green" is really green.  In fact, some companies use green cleaning as an offer to interest clients, but once they have the clients, they do not engage in "green" cleaning practices.

How do you know if a company is truly a "green" company?  International Janitorial Cleaning Services Association makes it easy for you to find a reputable green cleaning company through its directory.  Every organization listed in it has been "green" certified, and the directory is easy to search through.  Have a look yourself! And welcome to the world of GREEN CLEANING!

For some homes, green cleaning means that they only use substances like baking soda, vinegar, and lemons to clean their home. This list includes natural green cleaners. Some households may seek out manufactured green cleaning products that are healthy for the environment (some are greener than others ). When you change to  a green cleaning product, it is a good idea to avoid phosphates, chlorine, artificial fragrances, and artificial colors. [1]

The average household contains about 62 toxic chemicals, per the experts.  Phthalates are in fragrances, and are linked to disease processes in the human body. They are known endocrine disruptors and also are linked to lower sperm counts in men. Exposure to phthalates is through inhalation and skin.  Healthier choices are fragrance free products or green products that use plant based fragrance enhancers.[2]

Triclosan is a strong antibacterial agent that can promote the growth of drug-resistant bacteria.  The Environmental Protection Agency is currently looking into whether Triclosan is an endocrine disrupter and a probable carcinogen. It also can be found in rivers and streams, where it is toxic to algae.  Healthier choices include simple detergents and soaps with nontoxic ingredients. [2]

Ammonia is a common agent in many commercial cleaning products used for bathroom fixtures, sinks, windows, and jewelry.  When inhaled, it is a powerful irritant linked to asthma and worsening chronic lung diseases. It can create a poisonous gas when mixed with bleach.  A healthier choice may be Vodka, as it produces a reflective shine on any metal or mirrored surface. [2]

Manufacturers say that in small amounts the toxic agents wont be a problem. It is hard to gauge how repeated exposure may contribute to disease processes. While some of the products cause immediate issues, like lung irritation, headaches, or skin burns, chronic exposure to the products leas to a "toxic burden" with more serious physical consequences.
