    A growing number of cleaning products, many made of microfiber, are designed to clean surfaces including kitchen counters and bathroom sinks with only water. 

    Blogger Becky Rapinchuk, also known as the "Clean Mama," is a fan. She's been using natural cleaning products in her home for quite some time. 

    "For just every day wiping down the counters, cleaning surfaces, water and a microfiber cloth is sufficient," Rapinchuk said.

    Research shows 37 percent of adults would be interested in using microfiber and water to clean dirt, grease and bacteria. About 12 percent already use microfiber on a daily basis, said John Owen, a senior household analyst for Mintel.

    "People are increasingly equating a clean home with a healthy home and a healthy family. But at the same time there's also concern about the cleaning product ingredients. For these consumers, they still want their homes clean, but they're looking for alternatives," Owen said.

  • Dyson unveils 'intelligent' robot vacuum cleaner

    Dyson has unveiled a robot vacuum cleaner, which uses an advanced vision system to navigate rooms and can be controlled with a smartphone app. 


    Dyson has unveiled a robot vacuum cleaner, the 360 Eye, which navigates using a 360-degree vision system and can be programmed using an iPhone or Android smartphone.

    Most existing robot vacuum cleaners rely on bumpers, which prevent them from bumping into walls and furniture by reversing or changing their path accordingly. Some newer models also have forward-looking infrared sensors to detect obstacles.

    However, the Dyson 360 Eye vacuum has a 360-degree vision system that allows it to 'see' its environment and build a detailed floor plan to systematically navigate around a room and track its position.

    Infrared sensors work in conjunction with a lens on the top of the machine that houses a 360-degree panoramic camera. The camera can see all around the room at once so the machine can accurately triangulate its position.

    There are lots of things that professional cleaners can use to clean a place that don’t necessarily harm the environment. Some of those cleansers though are toxic to humans and animals and that presents a problem. To be a proper green company, the company needs to prove that it knows how to keep people just as safe as the planet. The last thing a company should do is say “we got it clean, but you can’t go in there or touch anything from there for a few days until the cleansers have settled in.”

    The food industry is famous for increasing its prices for foods that are certified organic. It’s no wonder that other companies would try the same thing. While it is true that “greening up” a business can cost money, beware of the company that insists on passing that cost along to the consumer (and don’t try to do that if the company is yours). There are a lot of great tax credits and grants available to companies who want to go green that can offset the cost of the upgrades.

    People can spend hours per week cleaning and tidying up their homes. However, according to a new study, no matter how much disinfectant people use, their homes will still be covered in bacteria. The bacteria, at least, mostly belong to the people who live in the house.

    "We have so little information about where the microbes come from that shape our microbiome, whether it's for health or disease," said microbiologist Jack Gilbert of the Argonne National Laboratory and University of Chicago according to Philly. "It's the indoor environment. The best place to look at that was the home."

    Shocked passers-by feared this young girl was a victim of “child labour” when they spotted her cleaning a London branch of estate agents Foxtons late at night.




    The girl, believed to be 10 or 11, was seen wiping down tables and emptying bins at 10.30pm at the Foxtons’ Hampstead branch, north London, where homes sell for millions of pounds.

    Marcus Butler, 38, had been walking past the office in Heath Street with his friends when he spotted the lone figure in the office.

    He and his group stopped to watch for a few minutes, expecting to at least see an adult was supervising, but the young girl was seemingly working

    Imagine going right up under the center of Music Hall's grand chandelier and being able to touch the crystals. That's what I did last week as Music Hall stagehands lowered the two-ton chandelier for a cleaning.




    Not too long ago, the chandelier would be lowered and raised at symphony concerts. I remember sitting in the gallery and watching it twirl to the music, virtually at eye level. But now it remains up high and only comes down once every year or two to wipe off the grime and allow it to dazzle even more.

    Being inside and looking up through its dazzling strands was like being in a giant jewel box.

    Briefly holding one of the larger crystals in my hand, I was amazed at how heavy it was.

  • Boy says his Dairy Queen shake was tainted with cleaning chemicals

    THORNTON, Colo. – A Colorado mother says the vanilla milkshake her son got from the Thornton, Colo. Dairy Queen was tainted by a cleaning solution.

    She ended up taking the boy to the hospital after he complained his tongue was burning, according to KMGH.

    “Something was like bubbling on my tongue,” said Riley Chase who had the ‘Dairy Queen’ Shake.

    “You couldn’t even taste the ice cream in it, it tasted like you were drinking a very strong cleanser, then the burn started instantly,” said Lisa Chase, the boy’s mother.
