Each and every job we come across has its own paths, cross- roads and even journeys. Its important, even vital for all staff to know what situation they may be getting into. Saying this, for every entrance you must always have an exit strategy. These are some of the essentials we must know as cleaners on the battlefront known as bloodborne pathogens.

Bloodborne Pathogens are microorganisms that are infectious in human blood or bodily fluids that can cause disease. Two of these diseases are HBV (Hepatitis B Virus) and HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) which is associated with AIDS. This is why it is so important for cleaning staff and employees be intrinsically safe when exposed to these types of environments. Exposed cuts, bites, needle pricks, saliva as well as through your mucus membranes are ways you can be inflicted by bloodborne pathogens. Proper training programs in your organization must be instilled in your employees and staff's best interest.

Without this training and knowledge your cleaning staff won't know the enemy they are fighting and the risk involved with this type of cleaning that not only effects them and the people around them, but they can also risk the lives of there loved ones at home. Having a ''Universal Precaution'' approach that was established by OSHA is a key component in training staff. What this means is to treat everything with caution and as if it is contagious such as blood, bodily fluids and always have on your PPE. When dealing with laundry or trash always be aware of the unseen that may be present such as needles or things that may potentially cut you and lead to infections. If the unfortunate happens and you get cut in that environment, always remember to contact your supervisor and deal with the situation immediately.

In closing, remember to keep it simple.

After and during any disinfecting always be cautious of your surroundings at all times.

Always wash hands thoroughly after taking of gloves and other PPE.

You are the most powerful weapon in the prevention of Bloodborne Pathogens.

Janitors and janitorial staff are way more important to everyday life than people usually think. They help keep places clean and safe, which actually plays a big role in preventing the spread of illnesses like COVID-19. Without regular cleaning in places like schools, offices, hospitals, and public buildings, things would get unsanitary pretty fast and people would get sick more often.

They also make shared spaces usable and comfortable. Imagine going to a school, store, or restroom that hasn’t been cleaned—trash would pile up, surfaces would be dirty, and it just wouldn’t feel safe to be there. In places like hospitals especially, their work is critical because keeping things clean can directly affect people’s health and recovery.

On top of that, they help businesses and daily routines run smoothly. A clean environment makes people feel better, stay focused, and actually want to be in that space. If janitorial staff weren’t around, a lot of places wouldn’t be able to stay open or function properly. Their work might go unnoticed most of the time, but it’s something everyone depends on every day.

Understanding bloodborne pathogens is essential for every cleaning employee and staff member because it directly impacts health, safety, and professionalism on the job. Bloodborne pathogens, such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C, can be transmitted through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids. In the cleaning industry, workers frequently handle materials and environments where exposure could occur—restrooms, trash receptacles, or post-incident cleanup sites. Without proper training and awareness, employees risk infection, illness, or even the spread of disease to others, including clients and coworkers. Knowledge of how these pathogens spread helps workers act with caution and confidence in every cleaning situation.

Equally important is understanding and following OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, which provides specific procedures to prevent exposure. Employees must know how to use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly, practice proper hand hygiene, and dispose of sharps or contaminated materials safely. Awareness also includes understanding what to do in the event of exposure—such as immediately reporting the incident, washing the affected area, and seeking medical evaluation. When staff members are trained in these procedures, they help create a workplace culture that prioritizes safety, compliance, and responsibility.

Finally, knowledge of bloodborne pathogens empowers cleaning professionals to protect not just themselves but the clients and communities they serve. A well-trained team demonstrates integrity and care, ensuring every site is not only visibly clean but also sanitized to the highest health standards. By staying educated and following OSHA guidelines, cleaning staff reduce risk, prevent cross-contamination, and uphold the reputation of their company as a trusted and safe cleaning partner. Understanding bloodborne pathogens isn’t just a compliance requirement—it’s a commitment to protecting lives every day.

Janitors and janitorial staff often get taken for granted and generally go unnoticed by they play a significant role in keeping us all safe and comfortable.  We can all relate to entering a restroom facility that is dirty, bad-smelling, and full of germs. Equally, we can likely recall entering a well-kept and properly cleaned and sanitized facility where you immediately feel significantly more comfortable.

Few of us seldom take the opportunity to think about the importance of the jobs performed by the janitors and janitorial staff.  But, these jobs are more than just controlling smells and messy appearances, they also keep us safe from harmful bacteria, germs, and viruses.  Proper cleaning and disinfecting reduces the spread of pathogens that can make us sick.  This is true not only for serious diseases, but also for common illnesses such as the common cold or flu.

Janitors and janitorial staff also make our lives convenient.  Imagine if you had to bring your own toilet paper, paper towels, and soap with you when using a restroom?  Janitors and janitorial staff replenish these consumable supplies and ensure they are always available for persons using restrooms.  Last but not least, properly disposing of garbage and ensuring that floors and surfaces are free from substances that can be trip or slip hazards keeps everyone safe.

So the next time you enter a facility and think "wow, this place looks great!"  Remember to thank you janitor and janitorial staff.  And, if you happen to enter a restroom that is in need of better care, don't hesitate to find a provider at : https://www.ijcsa.org/Janitorial-Service-Directory-Find-A-Janitorial-Service-JanitorialServices and recommend their services to the property manager.

Medical cleaning practices are very strict in the sense that there are rules to follow when it comes to the cleaning. Since medical facilities need to be properly clean to avoid patient getting sick medical cleaning practices can benefit residential and commercial places. The majority of people won’t be familiar with some of the rules and proper methods went dealing with cleaning chemical.

Some of those standards can help other residential and commercial situations in the sense that if they can implement a higher standard of cleaning there would be less people getting sick. There would be a lower number of people calling in sick to work and to school. Medical cleaning practices implementation at home can also help you avoid going to the doctor because of bacteria’s or virus that could have been avoidable if we were to do a deeper cleaning with the right cleaning chemicals.

A good idea to implement is to have a higher standardard level of cleaning for all types of situations, for homes and work places. By implementing medical cleaning practices across the board we can have a better control when it comes to people getting sick. According to the CDC, cleaning alone effectively reduces the number of microorganisms on contaminated equipment. Now imagine having the knowledge to use the correct chemicals it can really impact us in a good way.

Now, that we are in a pandemic cleaning is crucial and knowing and implementing the high standards of medical cleaning can keep a better control of the spread. For example, knowing that we should clean with color rags that way we are not cross contaminating areas and knowing about how to correctly use chemical that can kill harmful virus and germs. The medical cleaning process is essential for healthcare facilities to prevent the spread of germs, bacteria, pathogens, and viruses. Proper cleaning in these environments is crucial, as it directly impacts patient safety by reducing the risk of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and fostering a clean environment that supports patient recovery.

Additionally, maintaining cleanliness is vital for compliance with strict regulations and for ensuring the health of staff. Contaminated surfaces can harbor harmful pathogens that can easily transmit infections between patients and healthcare workers, making effective cleaning critical for infection control. Regular cleaning of workspaces and common areas protects healthcare staff from exposure to infectious agents, thereby promoting their health and well-being.

A clean environment helps reduce the risk of patients contracting infections during their stay, significantly contributing to overall patient safety. Healthcare facilities must also follow stringent cleaning and disinfection standards set by regulatory bodies to maintain accreditation and legal compliance. Finally, a clean and well-maintained healthcare facility reflects professionalism and can enhance patients' perception of the quality of care provided.

Topps Cleaning Service, along with other members of the International Janitorial Cleaning Service Association, has developed a specialized cleaning method tailored to meet the rigorous hygiene and sanitation standards required for hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities. This method involves thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting all areas within a medical facility, including waiting rooms, patient rooms, bathrooms, as well as examination and operating rooms. Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms present in human blood and bodily fluids that can lead to dangerous diseases in those who come into contact with them. Types of bloodborne pathogens include: HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

Those in the cleaning field are especially at risk for coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens since they may be tasked with cleaning up and sanitizing areas where bodily fluids were present.

OSHA (The Occupational Safety and Health Administration) has created industry standards which help employers and employees create a plan to remain safe on the job. By understanding the dangers of bloodborne pathogens and adhering to OSHA guidelines, employees can decrease their risk of exposure and do their jobs safely and effectively.
