We all know custodians are at risk from exposure to bloodborne pathogens so even if you are not exposed to bodily fluids as a part of your job you need to be prepared because at some point their are chances that you will come in to contact with blood, vomit and other fluids.

It is very important to receive training and follow recommended guidelines for preventing the spread of BBP.

The simple and very important precaution after possible  BBP exposure is hand washing with soap under warm water for at least 15 second.

Bodily Fluids refer to liquids present inside the body of living humans which includes Blood, Saliva and Sweat, while Bloodborne Pathogens are micro organisms contained in the human blood that may cause life threatening diseases. These pathogens include, but are not limited to Hepatitis-B (HBV) and Human-Immunodeficiency (HIV) that causes Aids.

Cleaning occupations with reasonable exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens and bodily fluids presents a risk to individuals that clean for a living. For example, an employee that handles beds sheets, trash, or clean up areas frequented by others may have exposure to bodily fluids and or pathogens which can enter the body through the nose and mouth or breaks in the skin.

Precautions should be taken to minimize exposure. The CDC "Universal Precaution" Approach states that all blood and Bodily fluids should be considered infections, so It is important for individuals with cleaning occupations follow a universal standards such as the OSHA "Bloodborne Standard" to protect themselves, contain infection, decontaminate affected areas, dispose of contaminates safely, disinfect tools/equipment and wash hands thoroughly. Follow all employer guidelines as it relates to safety and exposure and see and doctor if you believe you were exposed.

As a small business owner, I am always seeking new services to offer and ways to make my company stand out. Many of my residential clients have children and pets, which always bring new and exciting stains along with them. Commercial accounts inevitably have high-traffic carpet issues, as well as the occasional coffee spill or other stains. Carpet cleaning seemed to be the next logical step for me, and I will not offer a service until I am well educated on the topic.

I believe in educating myself and my clients, and I believe that being able to provide a certified service makes all the difference. This shows the client that we have taken the time to educate ourselves and bring them the best possible service available.

As a former medical worker in the Phlebotomy field, I understand with great detail the importance of Bloodborne Pathogen training for cleaning employees. There are always going to be situations you will come across that involve biohazard clean up, but blood and body fluids are one of the most important to take serious precautions with.

So many different viruses and diseases are present in Blood and body fluids, and many of them are incurable. Direct contact with these infected fluids can be detrimental to the overall health and well being of your employees. One misstep can change a persons life forever.

Things like HIV, Hep B or even more serious viruses like Ebola can be present in a single droplet of blood, and if exposed to open wounds or mucus membranes, can infect the person cleaning. Its imperative to take all necessary precautions to prevent cross contamination/infection.

OSHA has issued standards regarding bloodborne pathogens. Bloodborne pathogens contain infectious diseases (some of which can be deadly) and can be transmitted through contact with body fluids. Following the standards set forth by OSHA reduces a persons risk of becoming infected with a life threatening illness.

Workers who are in occupations that come in contact with bloodborne pathogens should be familiar with and follow OSHA's standards for bloodborne pathogens in order to protect themselves from becoming infected with a life threatening illness. OSHA provides training and educational resources to broaden the knowledge base of both employers and employees to avoid potential hazardous accidents.

Using the proper PPE, knowing the proper use of chemicals, reporting and documenting ALL accidents, knowing how to handle sharps, and contaminated linens, having exposure protocols in place all greatly reduce your risk for infection.
