Is there really a difference between domestic and commercial cleaning? In short the answer is yes; but there are various factors that make it so.

With commercial cleaning the work is considered a necessity for running the business so becomes a business expense. Business expenses are part of a budget therefore the cost of having the premises cleaned needs to fit into the allocated amount. This is not the case with domestic cleaning as it is purely a decision of the homeowner to clean their property themselves or pay to have it done.

There are certain expectations of cleaning by property owners, but the kind carried out with commercial property does depend on the business. Any business handling food is meticulous about keeping the place hygienically clean. Health requirements are such that if they do not keep the properties as clean as the set Health Standards they could lose their licence to sell food. This is a great incentive for people to work hard at keeping up the standards. Usually the cleaning is done by the employed staff. It is part of the closing down ritual so they know when they arrive the following day there will be no contamination.

Should a building contain offices for professional consultants or financial institutions the requirements are not so strict. A thorough vacuum and the hygienic cleaning of all the bathrooms are usually sufficient. Because offices house many desks with computers most cleaners are not required to dust. They are expected to empty the rubbish bins, but vacuuming the floor is the main prerequisite.

Many commercial buildings, especially large city skyscrapers leased by various organisations, tender out their cleaning. This helps them cope with the annual cost and it is budgeted into their expenses. Sometimes the cheapest tender is chosen but this does not guarantee a thorough job.

For a commercial cleaning company to make a profit they must ensure that the number of worked hours they pay for are less than the money they receive for the work. Should they have underquoted to get the job, less time is spent cleaning on each floor making the quality of the clean not as diligent as it probably should be.

There are thousands of commercial buildings and many areas that need to be cleaned and kept in pristine condition. Floors and bathrooms inside the buildings are a must for daily cleaning but the windows of the buildings also need a regular removal of dust both inside and out, especially if it is a shop front used for promotion of sales. Wooden or vinyl floors must be regularly polished to keep up the shine. All these jobs need to be carried out by professionals in those fields.

Because commercial cleaning is usually done by Cleaning Organisations the owners of the building will not meet the cleaners. If the job is not done well the lessees of the space will complain to the owner. This is unless the lessee has arranged the cleaning themselves. As cleaning in commercial property is usually done outside of business hours the cleaner is very rarely seen and in some cases it is not the same person doing the job each day.

To ensure the cleaning is kept up to standard, owners of commercial properties take out Contracts with Cleaning Companies. This is where the tendering becomes an advantage. The Contract is signed for a certain period of time, and at the end of that Contract the owners of the buildings can renegotiate their cleaning costs and requirements. If they are not happy with the kind of cleaning they are receiving they look elsewhere.

Commercial cleaning can be a lucrative business, but matching the quality with the charge is the difficult part and many commercial cleaners charge less than they should just to obtain the jobs. Once they have the Contract they sometimes 'on sell' these Contracts and make money from the new arrangement. Depending on how much the contract is worth, determines the amount of time that can be spent cleaning. Each cleaner is allocated a specific number of minutes to clean an area or floor and the work has to be finished in that time. Speed does not always combine with efficiency and quality is not always received.

The reduction of spending for cleaning, and the small profits to be made can cause many commercial cleaning jobs to be rushed and poorly administered.

Cleaning a home is different. To the homeowner their property is their castle. They will be much more fastidious about the results. They are paying for the cleaning out of their own pocket and they want to see some value in return for that expenditure. The work is more demanding than cleaning a commercial property.

The requirements of most homeowners are such that a reasonable cleaning job is not good enough. Expectations are high and on top of that they have all their personal things throughout the dwelling and allowing someone into their home to clean has security implications. The home owner needs to feel comfortable with the person doing the work and be sure the place will look as neat, clean and tidy as they expect after each clean.

Where do home owners go to find a cleaner? They don't put out tenders as in the commercial world so who do they get to clean? Many people advertise for cleaners in their local papers, or they hire people who promote themselves as cleaners, also there are Cleaning Agencies who will charge a fee for finding the cleaner for them.

Homes are very rarely cleaned on a daily basis. If the home owner has a regular cleaner the dwelling is usually cleaned either weekly or fortnightly. Some home owners require their cleaner to do housework as well, so the time spent on the property can be quite long.

Just vacuuming the floors and cleaning the bathrooms is usually not enough when cleaning a home; especially as bathrooms are more than the toilets, urinals and basins. There is the shower and bath as well as the toilet and sink. Kitchens are larger with many cupboards and a stove top and probably a range hood, whereas in a commercial situation the kitchen is usually a small set of cupboards with a sink and microwave. Because the home is not cleaned daily there is also a build up of dust and dirt, and all horizontal surfaces need to be wiped.

In both cases Time is what the commercial property owner and the homeowner are paying for. With the Commercial situation a certain amount of money is allocated indicating the time allowed for the clean. In the Domestic world this situation is reversed. The homeowner pays for the Time it takes to clean their property. The size of the property and the area to be cleaned governs the Time it takes. The larger the building the more Time required. The smaller the property the Time will be less. Less Time spent, costs less, but if the property is large and the correct Time is not allocated the poorer the job.

For most commercial property owners as long as the basics are done they are happy, but with a home owner, the less work carried out means more cleaning for them to do themselves. This somewhat negates the whole idea of having a cleaner. They want their home to be pristine and clean when they return home after a long days work. To see areas that have been missed or not cleaned properly can make an expensive exercise.

So the biggest difference between commercial and domestic cleaning is the payment. The commercial world pays for their cleaning because it is a necessity. Whether the cleaning is done well or not is not really the issue, it is a cost that has to be paid and therefore an expense for the business. With the domestic situation the cost is a discretionary outlay. If people have the spare money they can afford it, if not they clean themselves and that is why they expect perfection.

Yes there is a difference between cleaning commercial property and domestic dwellings, but the kind of cleaning received is dependent on how much each is willing to pay.

I hope you found this article interesting. My name is Julie Finch-Scally and I am the franchisor and founder of The Duster Dollies. The Duster Dollies is a cleaning business with a difference. We are booking agencies for domestic cleaning. This means you don't actually do the cleaning.

Here are five practical and simple cleaning tips that you may find as the answer to your growing problem. Below are a few tips that may help you simplify and generally lessen the stress of having to do the chore in the first place. Hopefully you will find one or more adaptable to work for you, so that your cleaning experience may be more enjoyable, less stressful, and possibly you may feel better about doing it more often.

Tip 1: Throw Out The Trash

A client of mine said this was an important cleaning tip for her household, although it sounded so simple. She said if she didn't stay on top of the trash, clutter quickly would accumulate and overwhelm her space.

By putting trash cans throughout the house such as in the kitchen, home office, bedrooms, bathrooms, and garage, it made it more likely that the trash would make it into the garbage, rather that piled somewhere or dropped on the floor. She said that smaller trash cans seemed to work better. She felt that the small one was more easily emptied thus eliminating the overwhelming pile that she said quickly would get out of control.

    Tip 2: Vacuum

Many clients of mine found that around once a week seemed to work best for vacuuming, but it all depends on your household. One client said she would start at one end of the house and vacuum her way throughout her entire home, room by room. Other clients vacuum a part of the house at a time. If there is a lot of clutter, feel free to vacuum whatever you can.

One person said she would take this opportunity to vacuum her furniture. For example, she would vacuum under her couch cushions one time and other furniture at another time. She said it was likely that she would not get the vacuum out again to specifically do under the cushions, so no time like the present while it was out.

    Tip 3: Dusting

A quick little dusting after the dust settles from your vacuuming is a perfect way to keep things looking great and to reduce the allergens, dirt and grime in your home. One client said she would get the cobwebs down while the dust settled, just a quick little cobweb dusting to get them off the ceiling and keep them from collecting in corners.

Then she would give a quick little dusting. She said she was always surprised that such a quick and easy little thing could pick up so much dust and dirt and get it out of her home. It's best to use a microfiber cloth so it doesn't stir up the dust.

    Tip 4: Do The Dishes

One client said she found if she did the dishes immediately, instead of waiting for the sink to fill up and then ending up with dirty dishes spilling out onto the counter top and usually onto the stove, it made it more manageable for her.

She said she found that if it was just a few dishes or a cup she would wash and dry it, putting it away immediately. She also said if it was a full sink, but not a full dishwasher load, she would get them rinsed and loaded. She said this helped keep them out of her sink.

    Tip 5: Put It Away

Another client of mine mentioned that this simple yet important tip had truly made a difference in her once cluttered life. She said when she first started to use it sometimes she would do great and sometimes she would slip. Ultimately she noticed that it became easier the more she practiced it, and she noticed that the better she got at it, the less cluttered she was and the more manageable that her clutter became.

She felt a boost in confidence. She said it made her feel good. She noticed when she would put something away, a warm feeling of accomplishment would come over her. She also said it was great because when she would go back to use something, and it was actually where it was supposed to be she felt the same sense of pride and accomplishment as before.

The living room is undoubtedly the most trafficked room in the house. This is not surprising seeing as it is where the family converges to touch base, connect and communicate. Therefore, it's no surprise that it gets dirty quickly and needs to be cleaned as frequently as possible.

Only problem is that you probably don't have the time to clean it as frequently and as thoroughly as possible. So, how can you clean the living room quickly, thoroughly and without missing the important spots?

The quickest way to do that would be to hire a cleaning service. Most reputable living room cleaning services have staffs that are trained to effectively clean the house without missing any spot. And the good thing is they can come in on designated days to clean the house -whether you're around or not. So, unless you've arranged for them to come every day, you still need to know to clean up the room and house every day. The following tips will help you do that in less than 15 minutes.

Ensure that All Cleaning Supplies are in One Place

This will save you a lot of time later. The best way to do this is to have all of them in one handy carry on basket that you can reach when you need to. The items you should have in the basket include Swiffer cloths or pledge mitts, long reach duster (perfect for getting to high hard to reach places), micro-fiber cloth, cleaning agents, disinfecting and surface wipes, Windex and a mop.

    Declutter the Couch

How great your sitting room looks does not matter if the couch is cluttered and un-arranged. So, start with the couch. Rearrange and fluff the couch so it looks clean and tidy. Remove all clothing materials, that don't belong on the couch, toys and any other thing there. If your kids left their toys there, just gather them in one place and transfer them to their toy box or closet. If you have a portable or hand vacuum, use that to get rid of crumbs, hair, and dust particles on the couch.

Throw all Unnecessary Items in the Container or Basket

Put this in the middle of the room and dump all the things that shouldn't be in the living room there. This is a more effective use of your time and is always better than running to different parts of the house to replace things.

    Fix the Coffee Table

If there's a coffee table or a center table in the living room, wipe it down, dust it and rearrange the items therein. It doesn't have to be perfect. Just make sure that they are neatly and decently arranged so the table doesn't look untidy.

    Vacuum The Living Room

Now, vacuum the whole living room. If you did the first four well, vacuuming won't take too long at all. This will help remove and eliminate all outstanding dirt and dust. If there is water on the floor, be sure to mop the floor and clean it before vacuuming. All these won't take longer than 15 minutes -20 minutes tops- to do. So, do them and your living room will end up looking very tidy and clean.

It's that time of the year again; the time families all over the world gather to celebrate the holidays. It's also the time of the year that the cleaning frenzy begins. With visitors coming in and out of homes and family members arriving for their yearly visit, the holiday season often tends to revolve around bouts of cleaning rather than eating, drinking and being merry.

Window Cleaning - Tips and Avoidance Methods

When it comes to getting your home spic and span there is nothing more tedious than the chore of window cleaning. It's tedious, very rarely completely effective and difficult while balancing on ladders to get to those hard to reach windows.

When it comes to window cleaning there are only three real options. You could hire a window cleaner to take care of it, you could spare the additional cost by cleaning the windows yourself, or you could fit the revolutionary new self-cleaning glass.

To keep your windows looking great and streak free you will need to ensure that they are cleaned often, however tedious this may be, it is necessary to maintain the aesthetic functions of glass windows. If you are going to attempt cleaning the windows yourself the following window cleaning tips may come in handy.

    Window Cleaning Products

It is best to try a few window cleaning products before you decide on a firm favourite. Options vary from store bought to home made solutions.

Many use products such as ammonia, vinegar, borax, alcohol or Epsom salts for cleaning glass. Home-made window cleaning solutions include club soda or a 50:50 vinegar and water solution which is particularly effective for really dirty windows.

One of the best window cleaning tips I can give you is to never combine an acid with an alkaline when making your own solution. Using an alkaline and acid (i.e. vinegar and ammonia) will just cause a neutralising effect and you'll be right back where you started.

    The Cleaning Process

It is best to clean your windows on a cloudy day as direct sunlight tends to dry the solution you are cleaning your windows with quicker and you'll be left with lots of unsightly streaks and a lot less good humour than you started out with.
Before you start cleaning the windows, wipe off all excess dirt - all that dust just turns into mud once water is introduced and the windows become harder to clean. Once you have dusted, use a hose to spray the windows and then spray on your choice of window cleaning solution.

You could use a squeegee or a cloth to clean the windows, a squeegee, however, will allow you to do it in less time. Once you have washed the windows it's time to dry them, you can do this with a squeegee but make sure that the blade is kept dry with each stroke.
A great window cleaning tip for those ambitious enough to be cleaning the interior and the exterior glass is to use different strokes on each side. By using vertical strokes on the exterior glass and horizontal strokes on the interior you'll be able to see which side of the glass the inevitable streaks are on.
Most homeowners choose newspaper to dry the glass once clean, while it's cheap and quite effective, newspaper disintegrates quickly and tends to leave deposits on the glass, to avoid this use a dry cotton towel. If you are using newspaper, remember to wear gloves as the ink tends to get rather messy. Once the glass is dry you can use a blackboard eraser to achieve a great shine.

    Stubborn Dirt Removal

For deposits of paint, resin or glue; wet the surface and then scrape them off using a razor blade or scraper. Take care to scrape in one direction only in order to avoid scratching the surface. Important: do not use sharp implements on self-cleaning glass.

    Winter Window Cleaning Tips

It's easy to keep frost from accumulating on exterior windows during the winter by adding two cups of antifreeze or rubbing alcohol to each gallon of wash water when cleaning glass.

    Avoid Window Cleaning Entirely

The best way to just avoid external window cleaning entirely is to have self-cleaning windows fitted in your home. Sound too good to be true?

Here's how self-cleaning glass works - an ultra-thin coating is applied to the glass during the manufacturing process; this coating has two highly beneficial effects on the glass. First organic residue on the glass is broken down by the ultraviolet wavelengths in sunlight then when it rains the dirt is washed off. As the coating is hydrophilic, when rain hits the glass it doesn't form droplets and in turn eradicates streaking. Rain water flows down the glass in a sheet and washes the dirt away. If you don't have time to wait for the rain a simple garden hose will be just as effective.

Self-cleaning glass is making life far easier and is giving home owners many reasons to use glass in the construction of their homes. What could be better than bright, open rooms with excellent outdoor views facilitated by huge glass sheets, without having to spend your days cleaning the glass?
