Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause disease in humans. These pathogens include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Needlesticks and other sharps-related injuries may expose workers to bloodborne pathogens. Workers in many occupations, including first responders, housekeeping personnel in some industries, nurses and other healthcare personnel, all may be at risk for exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

Therefore, it is important for all employers to inform their employees about the potential risk of coming in contact with bloodborne pathogens.  The best option is always prevention through education and providing the appropriate PPE to employees and encouraging them to follow these steps:

    • Use barrier protection at all times.
    • Use gloves for protection when working with or around blood and body fluids.
    • Change glove between patients.
    • Use glasses, goggles, masks, shields, and waterproof gowns/aprons to protect face from splashes.
    • Wash hands if contaminated and after removing gloves.

In order to reduce or eliminate the hazards of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, an employer must implement an exposure control plan for the worksite with details on employee protection measures. The plan must also describe how an employer will use engineering and work practice controls, personal protective clothing and equipment, employee training, medical surveillance, hepatitis B vaccinations, and other provisions.  This is important to keep all employees safe, healthy, and knowledgeable in the workplace when exposed to bloodborne pathogens.

The International Janitorial Cleaning Services Association offers a certification program that covers an extensive range of cleaning knowledge. Companies that have enrolled in this program have put in a lot of time studying to thoroughly understand the material. Certification is proof of their competency. Hiring a cleaning company that has completed certifications shows that they have a deeper understanding of the cleaning industry. With a deeper understanding, there is less likely to be a high amount of customer service complaints. The goal here is to be trained well enough in our field to eliminate the majority of problems from ever happening in the first place.

These companies have put forth the extra time and energy to complete these courses. It shows that they are willing to go above and beyond the bare minimum that is required of them. It is safe to say that if they are willing to do so in their training, they would be willing to do so with their customers as well.

On top of the rigorous cleaning certifications offered by the program, members also have the option to complete a customer service course. No matter how trained you at in your field of work, there will always be complaints from time to time, it is inevitable.  This will teach them how to put customers first and show the client that great customer service is a top priority.

Yes the hype surrounding COVID is justified as so many people have passed, now as professionals we have the opportunity to make an impact, not just for the moment but in general.

Bloodborne pathogens are inside every part of us and may develop and we need to learn how to deal with those in a safe, professional manner.

When janitorial services are mentioned, a few common things come to mind: Sweeping floors, washing windows, cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, vacuuming floors... and the list goes on. But one of the most effective and noticeable things commonly  goes unmentioned: carpet cleaning. An uncleaned carpet can detract from the overall appeal of any building, and neglecting your carpet can easily create one big, odorous eyesore. That's why when you employ a member of the IJCSA, you can rest assured that the carpet will get the same priority as the rest of your facility.

Members of the IJCSA such as our business (Lanford Group, LLC) understand that a carpet is just as important as having clean windows and a tidy interior. Many members of IJCSA have undergone training to become certified in carpet care & cleaning, and it shows in the work that we do.

It is very important to clean all facilities; residential and commercial the same way as healthcare facilities.  In actuality some of the same people are going and coming in residential area and commercial facilities as well as healthcare facilities.   Meaning the same people are spreading the same germs and viruses as people in healthcare facilities.

Whether a person knows it or not they are spreading germs to other people.  Therefore, using the same training and cleaning techniques are mandatory when it comes to cleaning either facility.  IJCSA have plenty of training for all types of facilities, just look at the link provided: https://www.ijcsa.org/Janitorial-Service-Directory-Find-A-Janitorial-Service-JanitorialServices

You can implement medical cleaning practices into other residential and commercial cleaning situations by using medical grade products; therefore you can be certain all facilities are getting the same type of cleaning and disinfectant.

In many environments that we provide janitorial services, it is highly likely that we will come into contact with blood soiled products during the normal course of our duties. From industrial settings to office settings, normal everyday accidents occur. Aside from accidents, there are employees with medical conditions that require the use of needles. All of these situations increase the risk of exposure to blood.

Proper training is the only way to ensure employees in the field are prepared to deal with these hazards and accidents. There are standards and best practices to follow when coming into contact with a bloodborne pathogen. Proper training ensures that employees understand how to clean, disinfect, and dispose of material.

Trash should not be manually compressed due to possible hazards from sharp materials. OSHA standards require that all blood-soiled material be disposed of in a red biohazard bad. Sharps should be disposed of in a puncture resistant container. Following these standards, and protocols, will help ensure the safest possible work environment.
