Janitors and janitorial staff of commercial cleaning companies play an important part in our lives, even though many of us don't realize it.

Janitorial companies that employ these janitors and janitorial staff members are responsible for protecting the occupants of Office buildings, Medical buildings, Banks, Schools, Day cares, etc. They are also protecting the customers that visit these places, by cleaning with the proper chemicals and using the correct cleaning techniques these janitors and janitorial staff members can effectively remove the bacteria, viruses and other contaminants.  The benefits of a properly cleaned building is fewer illnesses, sick days and higher morale to name a few.  For its guests it is more inviting and helps prevent them from carrying germs and viruses out and spreading them to the public.

It may seem easy to accomplish these things, but some janitors and janitorial staffers are under trained or improperly trained.  In fact some janitorial companies are just concerned about making money, not about the health of a building or its occupants...sad but true.  Others take what they do seriously and even seek certification like IJCSA to show that they are committed to quality and cleanliness of the accounts they service.  Cleaning has a lot of health risks because of the numerous chemicals and Bloodborne pathogens or other possibly infectious material that is used and handled on a daily basis.  It is also a physical job because many spend hours on their feet, bending, stooping, lifting repeatedly.  Many don't realize the demands of this profession, thusly one reason why it has a high turnover rate.

So next time you enter a building and you notice how well it is cleaned, tell a janitor or someone who can hopefully let that janitor know about the compliment...they seldom hear one- https://www.ijcsa.org/Janitorial-Service-Directory-Find-A-Janitorial-Service-JanitorialServices

Healthcare facilities are some of the best places for curing certain ailments but can sometimes become the cause of these ailments themselves. Without the proper precaution's and in depth cleaning, these facilities can become more of a problem than a solution.

The importance of cleaning healthcare facilities is astronomically important to the well being of staff and patients. Following universal precautions with blood and proper cleaning protocols is a necessity. These healthcare facilities have meticulous protocols for every specific cleaning and situation that can occur in the healthcare facility. These protocols must be followed to ensure the best results possible when dealing with these issues.

Many of these protocols and instructions can be found at the Janitorial Service Directory Being able to thoroughly study and learn about these instructions on the IJCSA website is incredibly valuable. The more people become knowledgeable in these cleaning standards and protocols the more lives will be saved from improper decisions made my cleaners and healthcare staff.

When it comes to cleaning, you never know what you will be potentially exposing yourself to. Each and every day you risk the chance of contracting some sort of virus or disease from things such as surfaces or linens. It is so important for cleaning staff to know about bloodborne pathogens to ensure they can protect not only themselves, but others as well. Many would not think the day to day of a cleaning company to be potentially dangerous, but if uneducated it could be.

When you have cleaning staff, educating them about bloodborne pathogens is just the start of keeping them safe. Many of the viruses or diseases that can be contracted while cleaning are life changing. They are untreatable; they can be fatal. It is something you would potentially have your entire life and could possibly make you very ill.

Cleaning surfaces and linens using proper PPE and proper disinfectants is so important. This is what will protect you and your cleaning staff from contracting these horrible viruses and diseases. Once you initially train your staff, you should continue to have classes to remind them of proper cleaning methods and using proper PPE.

It has never been more obvious than now, with the current pandemic situation, that we cannot take for granted cleaning procedures or protocols. We must be vigilant in developing a thorough offensive plan. This plan must include a clear understanding of what a pathogen is and what is required to develop a defensive and strategic plan. This plan should outline clearly, proper practices, handling of areas and transportation of contaminated items.

The first step is understanding that pathogens are presented in human blood and that they can cause serious and deadly diseases in humans. Exposure to these pathogens happen when they come into contact with mucus membranes such as the nose, mouth, or open cuts or breaks in skin.  This exposure can occur from blood, vomit, and saliva. Diseases such as HBV, Hepititus, HIV can be contracted from such exposure. This is why, a Universal Precaution Approach must be seriously adhered to.

OSHA requires that the Universal Precautions should be clearly outlined and posted at each work site. It is imperative that it be followed. Should contamination occur specific documentation must be submitted. This also requires records to be kept for 3 years. If an employee is exposed, they must know that the first thing they should do is immediately report it to their supervisor and notify their physician.  The cleaning employee should be made aware of potential symptoms such as fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and light color stools.  Remember the Best Defense is a Thorough Offense.

Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause diease in humans. These pathogens include Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV.

In order to reduce or eleminate the hazards of occupatoinal exposure to bloodborn pathogens. An employer must implement an exposure control plan for the work site. The plan must describe how an employer will use engineering and work practice controls, personal protective clothing and equipment, employee training, vaccinations, and requirements by OSHA bloodborne pathogens standards.

It is important for employer and employee to know OSHA information on bloodborne pathogens and how to contain them. This information can save a life and keep pathogens from spreading or being able to enter people blood stream through the nose, mouth, mucus membrane, cuts or tears in the skin.
