Having certification in green cleaning does not just simply benefit your employer, it benefits you as an employee but also as a person. People will know that on top of providing a cleaning service you are committed to protecting the environment, which is absolutely invaluable in today's world.

As an individual who works almost exclusively with cleaning products that are green seal certified, I can personally assure anyone who's skeptical that green seal certified chemicals are not hazardous to the environment and they do a first rate job at keeping our buildings clean and sanitary. At my city, we've long been striving to be as eco-friendly as possible and still provide quality services to the community, and I can say we deliver that certainly, there is always room for improvement and by taking the step to use eco-friendly products we've made just that much more progress.

Think about cleaning products from decades past, and to some extent not all that long ago as well, they did their job by cleaning. However, there was always the risk of damage to the environment, but human health as well. That is something that should always be taken into consideration. Take for example, medicine that's made specifically for children, when your kids are sick you naturally want them to take medication, however you want to be sure that what they take is safe for younger people, as an adult dosage could seriously cause harm.

To sum it all up, we can do what we need to do in many ways, so there's no reason why we shouldn't take the time to get green cleaning certification or look into cleaning services that specialize in green cleaning, it is a naturally mutual benefit to the planet and customers and clients. Whichever path of life we may be on, whichever career we decide to take, all of us can agree that having a clean world is of utmost importance. Now that we have that chance there's no reason not to take it, look no further than the IJCSA Green Cleaning Directory, there's no better place to start your search then right here. https://www.ijcsa.org/Green-Cleaning-Services

The Importance of Educating Cleaning Staff About Bloodborne Pathogens

As a new business owner in the professional cleaning industry, ensuring the safety and well-being of employees and clients is a top priority. One critical area often overlooked is the knowledge and training surrounding bloodborne pathogens. These are infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause diseases such as Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). For cleaning staff, who may come into contact with blood or bodily fluids during their duties, understanding the risks and proper protocols is essential not only for their health but also for maintaining a safe work environment.

Providing comprehensive training on bloodborne pathogens equips employees with the tools to handle potentially hazardous situations safely and effectively. This includes recognizing exposure risks, using personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly, and following proper cleanup and disposal procedures. By educating staff on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and best practices, we not only comply with legal requirements but also foster a culture of responsibility and professionalism within our company. Employees who feel confident in their knowledge and skills are more likely to perform their jobs effectively, reducing the risk of accidental exposure or contamination.

For our clients, hiring a cleaning company that prioritizes safety and hygiene sends a strong message of care and professionalism. When staff are trained to handle bloodborne pathogens, they can manage unexpected situations, like minor injuries or medical emergencies, with competence and care. This not only enhances the reputation of our cleaning business but also builds trust with clients who value health and safety. As a new owner, investing in this training early sets the foundation for a successful, ethical, and safety-conscious company that stands out in the industry.

The indispensable role that janitorial staff play in our everyday lives can often be overlooked, and under appreciated. From safely opening schools and offices each day, to proper maintenance and cleaning of facilities. Janitors politely do it all! Even special tasks, including snow and debris removal from parking lots and walkways. To helping a student or client find a lost object or clean up a spill. It's difficult to overstate how important janitorial staff are to the smooth operation of businesses and universities everywhere.

High quality maintenance and cleaning of cafeterias, restrooms and facilities is a main factor regarding the importance of janitorial staff. Students and staff enjoy clean cafeterias and tables to eat from each day. Also, janitorial staff ensures trash cans are emptied and floors are appropriately mopped and clean. We can often take for granted professionally clean and stocked restrooms as well, but it would be difficult to function without properly clean toilets and ample paper towels and tissue. These small details seem irrelevant, but together they make up the necessary duty that janitors undertake.

Policing facilities and grounds is another critical aspect of a janitorial position that can go unrecognized. Janitors ensure students and personnel safely walk into a secure, adequately lit building each day. Janitorial staff are always the first ones in the building, thoroughly checking grounds and unlocking entrances. Additionally, securing hallways, walkways, and parking lots ensure a safe entry and exit for all staff and students. On a final note, detailed inspection, alarming, and locking up buildings and facilities each night guarantees belongings and property are safe and sound. Janitorial staff truly are an essential component to the operation of schools, businesses, and offices everywhere.

Bloodborne Pathogens are microorganism that are present in the blood of humans, they can also be found in other bodily fluids as well. (HIV) Human Immunodeficiency Virus and (HBV) Hepatitis B Virus are the two most commonly referred to blood borne pathogens. Both of these pathogens can be deadly! That is why using Universal Precautions and proper training is essential to reduce the risk of exposure and potential infections.

Bloodborne pathogens need a point of entry into the body, mucous membranes and or any break in the skin can be used as a point of entry, which can lead to infection. Using proper (PPE) Personal Protective Equipment is essential when containing and cleaning up any potentially hazardous spills. Using (SDS) Safety Data Sheets for any chemical used for disinfecting is essential to ensure the proper dwell time is achieved. Making sure to throw away any sharps in a properly labeled container and using infectious waste bags to dispose of material used during decontamination. Any equipment used during decontamination that is not being disposed of needs to be disinfected as well. After making sure to wash your hands immediately and thoroughly.

If during this process you think you have been exposed to a bloodborne pathogen report this to your supervisor immediately and see a doctor.  Some symptoms for (HBV) include abdominal pain and jaundice. Jaundice is a build up of bilirubin in the blood and is used as a measurement in determining liver health. It is shown as yellowing in the skin and eyes. Some symptoms of (HIV) include persistent fever, night sweats and constant fatigue. Many of these symptoms can take years to develop making the host unaware they have been infected. This is why assuming any bodily fluid can be potential infectious is essential to reduce the risk of exposure and new infections.

We can implement medical cleaning practices into residential and non-medical commercial spaces by following the same protocols for healthcare facilities. This includes using medical-grade cleaning and disinfecting products that are broad spectrum and work against bacteria, viruses and fungi to reduce the spread of germs and control the spread of infections and deliver an overall healthier environment.

For residential clients the focus should be on the resident’s or family’s specific needs, such as the disinfection of toys or pet areas and to use eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaning products that are safe for children and pets as requested.

When implementing medical cleaning practices in non-medical commercial spaces it is also important to disinfect shared equipment, desks and high-touch surfaces in common areas with the use of broad-spectrum disinfectants that kill a wide variety of pathogens. It’s also very important to use  a detailed cleaning checklist to be completed by every custodian every time they clean and serves as a log documenting who, when and what areas and equipment were cleaned.

During the frightful days of the Covid-19 pandemic we all became ever more aware of the dangers of the spread of a deadly virus, and for the first time in generations the thought of being in public because of the possibility of encountering an infected person or surface evoked a deep sense of fear in us.

Those of us who worked in the facility cleaning and maintenance industries became ever more aware of the importance of our work and of strictly following cleaning and disinfection protocols. We knew to use the right products for specific surfaces in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications was necessary to disrupt the spread of bacteria and viruses found in healthcare facilities because this essential protocol serves as an important line of defense against the spread of infections from one person to another.

In addition to the importance of routine cleaning and disinfection, wearing PPE, regular handwashing, ventilation and air circulation, proper hazardous waste disposal (SHARPS, soiled linens, contaminated waste), and ongoing training play important roles in supporting patient care goals and healthy communities.
