    Cleaning of a healthcare facility provide unique challenges and doing it properly requires the right education and training. Employers are required to provide the proper education and training for their employees. With that being said finding the right information to provide to employees becomes even more difficult as guidelines change and new bacteria and viruses become even more difficult to kill. 

         Healthcare setting provide a difficult setting because as bacteria and viruses are treated new resistant strains become more prevalent.  Patient in a healthcare setting are usually immunocompromised. Leading to good location for the new ‘superbugs’ to grow. 

         Having the latest information and great technique to cleaning these setting will provide the safest environment for employees and patients.     I am confident that green cleaning will benefit my company. Green cleaning is simply safer for the earth. They are naturally derived, non-toxic, and biodegradable. Meaning they have no negative impact on the environment. Being green cleaning certified is healthier for everyone in the workplace. We want all our customers and vendors to become intimately familiar with all the procedures, adapting them not only into the workplace, but in their everyday lives. When these products are used as opposed to chemical cleaning products, you can feel safe and comfortable knowing your employees aren't breathing in harsh chemicals. A recent study was done that proved using harsh chemicals to clean your home regularly could be just as harmful to your lungs as smoking 20 cigarettes a day. That is something I think is important for employees to know.

    Also with all the allergies people have, and the sensitivity to smells, most green cleaning products are unscented or have a very light scent. Green cleaning services are all about reducing waste and cleaning more efficiently. My commitments overall objective would be to provide a healthy and safe working environment for employees, customers and visitors while assuring we will be effective in our maintenance and cleaning.     The competing demands of speed and efficiency don't apply when it comes to custodial/janitorial services and potential bloodborne pathogens. Safety takes priority!

    Every environment where there are lots of people going through on a regular basis needs to ensure that the janitorial/custodial staff are properly trained and equipped to handle potential biohazards. Bloodborne pathogens are potential everywhere. Some bloodborne pathogens are short-lived when exposed to the environment but some bloodborne pathogens survive longer periods and pose a greater risk of cross-contamination. 

    Every environment can't be treated the same as they do not pose the same potential level of risk. The first step to taking on any new custodial or janitorial service contract is a risk assessment. Identify and categorize all of the potential types of risks. Ensure that risk mitigation processes and procedures are in place to handle the risks that are likely to occur. At a minimum, custodial/janitorial staff need to be trained to handle potential biohazards and provided the proper biohazard containment kits.

    Janitorial and cleaning services employees should be aware of the dangers of bloodborne pathogens.  These pathogens may contain hepatitis B and/or HIV.  Certain procedures must be followed to protect yourself.

    Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when cleaning in an area where there is a risk of bloodborne pathogens.  PPE includes gowns, gloves and goggles. Hand washing is also a  critical step in protecting yourself.

    When handling contaminated laundry, sharp objects and trash, certain protocols must be followed.  Laundry must be placed in a bag labeled or color coded.  All sharp objects must be put into a sharps container that this labeled and handles only sharp objects.  Trash should not be compressed and always handled as if there was blood inside.

    "Why Is Properly Cleaning Healthcare Facilities So Important" 

    There are at least 3 reasons why properly cleaning healthcare facilities is so important.  The primary reason is to keep individuals (patients, residents, staff, visitors) as healthy as possible.  To ensure the cleaning industry follows specific guidelines to reduce the risk of transferring infectious matter.  This is not a fail-proof method, because unless rooms and equipment are disinfected continuously throughout the day – infectious matter can easily be spread.  Unless visitors and staff wear protective wear, they too can inadvertently transfer infectious matter.

    A secondary reason is the cost associated with additional sickness caused by the transfer of infectious matter. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that approximately 1 in 20 patients will acquire an infection during a stay in a healthcare setting where they are receiving medical or surgical treatment. These healthcare-associated infections (HAI) result in nearly $33 billion dollars in preventable healthcare costs per year.
