The disease that sickened more than 200 people who attended a cheerleading competition at Comcast Arena recently is norovirus, sometimes called cruise ship disease, health officials say.

And they think they’ve tracked down how the disease spread. Teens became ill with a stomach virus while at the event, said Suzanne Pate, a spokeswoman for the Snohomish Health District.

Janitorial crews were called to clean up the floors of a restroom and adjacent concourse before the awards ceremony Feb. 4, she said. The event was a competition among cheerleading and dance teams from across the state.

“Those surfaces where there was illness were contaminated,” Pate said. People could have been infected as they walked through the restroom and concourse areas if they didn’t carefully wash their hands, she said.

A delegation of about 15 people, primarily made up of workers, delivered a petition with more than 80 worker signatures to the Unicco offices at the Harvard Business School at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, demanding that Harvard give the two workers their jobs back.

Matt Paxton is the master of mistakes.

Although he is best known as an extreme cleaning specialist on A&E’s Emmy-nominated hit-show “Hoarders,” it wasn't long ago when Paxton hit rock bottom.

A 1997 graduate of University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Paxton told his story Wednesday night at Monroe Hall.

“I’m the guy on ‘Hoarders’ who cleans up a lot of poop,” is how Paxton introduced himself to more than 200 students and faculty. “I clean the messiest homes in the world.”

NEW ORLEANS - A Jefferson Parish man is suing a janitorial company for injuries he sustained at work when he slipped on a floor that had just been mopped.

Jimmy Hernandez filed suit on Jan. 20 in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court against Empire Janitorial Sales and Service.

Hernandez claims he was working as an engineer at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans when the defendants cleaned the floor of his workspace.

Hernandez alleges he finished up his work and was leaving the room when he slipped on a liquid the defendants spread on the floor and fell. The plaintiff also claims he was lifting himself from the first fall when he slipped and fell again on the substance and received personal injuries to his shoulders, hands, elbows and back.

GERMANTOWN HILLS - Now that Cynthia Schneider has acquired $1 million in liability insurance, the Germantown Hills Village Hall can be cleaned professionally again.

During its regular meeting Thursday night, the Village Board approved a deal to resume using Schneider to clean two village-owned buildings. The Germantown Hills-area resident had been providing janitorial services for four or five years, Trustee John Ford said, but was idle the past few months while the board debated her insurance status.

The village insurance carrier's standard recommendation is for contract employees to carry $1 million in liability coverage. According to Trustee Clark Hopkins, Schneider had no proof of insurance - an issue he raised at the November board meeting.
