Cleaning employees and janitorial staff play a crucial role in maintaining hygienic environments in workplaces, healthcare facilities, schools, and public spaces. However, their exposure to potential hazards, including bloodborne pathogens, makes proper training and awareness essential. Bloodborne pathogens, such as hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), are infectious microorganisms that can be transmitted through contact with contaminated blood and bodily fluids. Without adequate knowledge and protective measures, cleaning staff risk accidental exposure, which could lead to serious health consequences. By educating employees about proper handling procedures, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and disposal methods, businesses can ensure a safer workplace while preventing the spread of infections.

One of the most effective ways to minimize the risk of bloodborne pathogen exposure is through comprehensive training programs. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requires employers to provide bloodborne pathogen training for employees who may come into contact with infectious materials. This training includes proper hand hygiene, correct usage of gloves, masks, and protective clothing, and the safe disposal of contaminated items, such as needles or blood-soaked materials. Employees must also be trained in immediate response procedures, such as how to clean and disinfect surfaces contaminated with bodily fluids, as well as what to do in the event of accidental exposure. By fostering a well-informed workforce, companies can reduce workplace incidents and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.

Beyond regulatory compliance, equipping cleaning employees with knowledge about bloodborne pathogens fosters a culture of responsibility and professionalism. When staff understand the risks and necessary precautions, they are more likely to handle hazardous materials correctly and take their role in public health seriously. Additionally, proper training enhances employees’ confidence and preparedness, leading to improved job performance and reduced workplace anxiety. Clients and businesses that rely on cleaning services also benefit, as they can trust that their environments are being maintained in a safe and sanitary manner. Ultimately, investing in bloodborne pathogen education not only safeguards the health of cleaning employees but also protects the broader community from potential health risks.

The knowledge and understanding of bloodborne pathogens by cleaning employees is important for a multitude of reasons. the improper handling of blood, bodily fluids, or items contaminated with said liquids can lead to our employees becoming ill with a HIV, HIB, or other known bloodborne illnesses.

Knowing that these illnesses can be transmitted through a break in the skin, or mucus membranes is very important. A needle stick or a bite from an infected patient can transmit an illness, but so can touching a contaminated surface with your bare hands and then touching your eyes or mouth. That is why strict adherence to PPE protocol  is important. The proper use of gloves, goggles, and hazmat suits when the need is there will go a long way in keeping an employee safe.

Of course, even the best and most strict usage of PPE is useless unless paired with common sense. This is why we must implement rules to our employees that certain things are never allowed while working near bloodborne pathogen locations. Things such as eating, drinking, applying lip balm are always a no go.

When we stress the importance of all different aspects of safety around blood and bodily fluids, we can help ensure our employees are healthy, and happily working with us for a long time. After all, the main goal around blood and blood products is saftey.

Submitted article "How Important Are Janitors & Janitorial Staff To Our Daily Lives", written by Lynn Neumann:

Janitors and janitorial staff form the backbone of our communities, ensuring that every environment—from bustling urban centers to quiet suburban locales—remains clean, healthy, and welcoming. Their work in janitorial services and commercial cleaning is essential for maintaining workplace hygiene and public health. Through routine custodial services, deep cleaning, and advanced sanitisation techniques, these professionals help to reduce the spread of germs and create safer environments for all.

Public transit areas, including train stations, subways, and bus terminals, are particularly dependent on the expertise of cleaning staff. With thousands of passengers moving through these spaces daily, the role of environmental cleaning in public transit is indispensable. The diligent work of janitors in these high-traffic zones ensures that surfaces are regularly disinfected, reducing the risk of contagious diseases and keeping transit hubs operational and safe for commuters.

Equally important is the role of janitorial services in hospitals, malls, and schools, where the stakes for cleanliness are exceptionally high. In hospitals, for instance, specialized healthcare cleaning protocols are in place to control infections; cleaning staff meticulously disinfect operating rooms, patient wards, and emergency areas to minimize healthcare-associated infections. In large shopping malls, janitors perform routine and deep cleaning tasks in common areas, food courts, and restrooms, ensuring that high-traffic public spaces remain inviting and germ-free. Schools rely on dedicated custodial teams to effectively sanitise classrooms, libraries, and cafeterias, regularly cleaning high-touch surfaces like door handles and desks to create a healthy learning environment for students. These specific examples underscore the critical nature of facility maintenance and industrial cleaning in sectors where public well-being is directly impacted.

For those interested in exploring more about this vital industry, the Janitorial Directory provides an extensive resource on commercial cleaning and janitorial services. By recognising and supporting the work of janitorial staff, we acknowledge their crucial role in sustaining the health and efficiency of our public and private spaces every day.

When we take over the cleaning of a customer's life wither it is office or home. This is personal, these people are entrusting us to keep their space clean and proper. Even something as simple as carpet can cause so many problems, allergies and germs live at our feet. When I think of how I will be implementing carpet cleaning in my services. I would have to say very carefully.

The service would have to be done with grace and dignity. The stains that are at hand at some of these locations are tricky to get out without the right chemicals, personally la awesome and a few drops of fabric softener is my go-to. But when we work for the customer, we have to listen to their needs and that is where I would have to start, I don't see the need to over sell a service they have no interest in. but knowing what you are doing should be the first step in the offering of this service.
