Bloodborne Pathogens are microorganisms found in human blood that can cause serious diseases including Hepatitis B & C, and HIV. Cleaning employees and staff have an important role in maintaining the health and safety  of the facility where they might come across blood and other infectious body fluids.  Cleaning staff that are responsible for spills, accidents, improperly discarded items need to understand the risks associated with bloodborne pathogens and take precautions to protect themselves and others to infections.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)  includes the proper use of gloves, protective clothing, eye shiels, and face masks/shields for protection when necessary.  Employees and staff should never handle blood and body fluids with their bare hands and should adhere to the proper in place procedures for cleaning and disinfecting contaminated areas. they should know how to handle contaminated materials, sharps, and other infectious waste safety to help reduce the risk of accidental exposure.

Bloodborne pathogen awareness is a requirement and important in creating a safe and responsible culture.  Cleaners and staff should know how and understand the importance in reporting exposures and injuries immediately to supervisors. Training, refresher courses, proper PPE, and adhering to safety protocols can help reduce workplace risks.
