Universal Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens

Custodians and other staff must understand and follow universal precautions when working around bloodborne pathogens, including Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). All blood and body fluids must be treated as potentially infectious.

Prevention is key when cleaning surfaces and floors to prevent the spread of viruses. Employees should always wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and use caution when handling sharps. Never reach into or push down the contents of a waste container with your hands, as this can result in accidental exposure or injury.

Finally, it is important to use the correct chemical product that is effective against resilient viruses and other pathogens. Microfiber cloths and microfiber mop heads should also be changed regularly, particularly when moving from room to room, to prevent the potential spread of viruses or other contaminants from one space to another.
