From commercial buildings, shopping malls, airports, and sports and concert venues, to hospitals, schools, and any number of other public places and spaces, have you ever considered just how important janitorial staff are to providing a safe and sanitary environment in our daily lives?

    Responsibilities of Janitorial Service Providers

The responsibilities of janitorial staff make quite a long list that go well beyond scrubbing toilets and mopping floors. There are safety factors to consider regarding the presence of pathogens, chemicals, and surfaces, such as floors, sinks, door handles, and many other surfaces. Furthermore, janitorial staff need to be well trained and have access to all of the personal protection equipment (PPE), supplies, and material safety data sheets (MSDSs) required to safely and successfully fulfill cleaning tasks.

    Bloodborne Pathogens

Bloodborne pathogens (BBPs) are microscopic organisms found in human blood which can cause illness and disease when spread through exposure to infected blood and/or bodily fluids. You may think of BBPs as being present only in hospital settings. Consider that BBPs may be present anywhere, such as someone with a cut on their finger dripping blood into a public bathroom sink and simply wiping the blood away with a paper towel. Sure, the blood isn’t visible anymore, yet BBPs will still be present if the blood was infected.

    Chemical Hazards

Created in 1970, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA – a US Department of Labor agency) strives to ensure safe and healthy working conditions for employees, including monitoring the use and safety of some 650,000 hazardous chemicals used in millions of establishments – thereby, creating safe and healthy conditions for the general public. OSHA estimates more than 30 million American workers are exposed to such hazardous chemicals in the workplace, which means the general public may be exposed in many situations as well.

    Proper Training for Janitorial Staff

It’s clear to see that proper training and education are needed for janitorial staff to complete their jobs safely and to keep a clean and safe environment for the public. The International Janitorial Cleaning Services Association (IJCSA) is dedicated to providing training and support to janitorial companies and staff in commercial cleaning to meet OSHA’s standards and regulations. Further, IJCSA has a directory of janitorial companies searchable by keywords and also by City and State. For example, searching in my hometown of Nashville, TN, you could find Pristine Building Services LLC as well as this company's website.

When it comes to cleanliness and safety, medical cleaning sets the gold standard by targeting and eliminating harmful pathogens at a microbial level. Without a doubt, if you need to clean surfaces and make sure they’re safe from harmful microbes, medical cleaning is your way to go.

The same disinfectant agents used to kill microbes in a healthcare setting need to be utilized regardless of the setting if you want to ensure the highest level of disinfection. When you think about cleaning and disinfecting a residential or commercial environment, you need to keep in mind that you’re going to need the appropriate agents to properly disinfect the surfaces you’re targeting. “Hospital-grade” cleaning products that are used in medical cleaning are just disinfecting agents that kill harmful microbes but with more potency. Because medical facilities get a lot of sick people, they have a higher concentration and diversity of harmful microbes that you won’t find to the same degree in every home or business.

You may not need “hospital grade” disinfectants for typical residential homes or commercial facilities, regular EPA-registered disinfectants will work just fine for the vast majority of the time. However, if someone has been sick in a client's home/office, or if there’s another outbreak like COVID-19, you may need to use stronger disinfectants like the “hospital grade” ones used to kill larger concentrations of harmful microbes, if appropriate. The ability to provide this thorough disinfection that hospitals regularly need can be beneficial to many janitorial services and sometimes crucial to ensure client satisfaction.

Medical cleaning practices go beyond just cleaning and disinfecting medical buildings, the principles should inform cleaning procedures for educational, recreational, public facilities and more. Medical cleaning plays a major part in health and safety. It should be studied and applied by all janitorial professionals, like the janitors of IJCSA; trained, and certified professionals ensuring the health and safety of various communities around the world. Healthcare facilities take in hundreds of patients each month to treat all kinds of cases. In many cases, patients are suffering from infectious diseases that may spread to other patients, medical workers, visitors, and other staff in the facility. For this reason, it is crucial that medical facilities prioritize proper cleaning to ensure that every effort is made to fight against spreading infectious diseases to other people.

According to the CDC, infectious diseases can spread through various means. They can spread through direct contact with the patient, indirect contact (touching something the patient has touched), splashes and sprays to the eyes or mouth, through abrasions in the skin, through the air, and through animals or insects. The challenge of keeping the infectious disease from spreading starts when the patient arrives at the hospital so the job of cleaners working in a healthcare setting is to minimize this spread as much as possible using the available resources.

Infectious diseases like HBV, HCV, and HIV and more, can have lifelong impacts on a person's life. These diseases can cause liver damage, liver failure, weakened immunity, cancer, and death. There are some treatments available for these infectious diseases and vaccines like the HBV vaccine but others like HCV do not have vaccines and treatments don’t always work.

Disinfectants are a tool used for killing microbes that cause infectious diseases. The disinfectants are diluted with water to the appropriate ratio and when applied to surfaces for the recommended amount of time, they kill harmful microbes. It’s essential that medical facilities regularly disinfect all areas of patient rooms and restrooms to prevent the spread of infectious disease. Many IJCSA members are trained and certified to handle medical cleaning and use approved disinfectants to keep medical facilities clean and safe.
