Bloodborne pathogens in the workplace is a safety concern and employers should follow OSHA safety precautions.

Standard precautions include maintaining personal hygiene and using personal protective equipment (PPE), engineering controls, work practice controls, and proper equipment cleaning and spill cleanup procedures.

The three most common bloodborne pathogens (BBPs) are human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV).

Proper bloodborne pathogen cleanup involves specialized disposal procedures. Placing soiled items in doubled disposable red bags with “Biohazard” clearly marked, and giving them to a licensed infectious waste removal company, are two ways to protect the area and people from bloodborne pathogens.

It is extremely important for cleaning employees and staff to know about bloodborne pathogens. Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause disease in humans. These pathogens include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Knowing about bloodborne pathogens helps cleaning employees enforce precautionary measures to prevent exposure for themselves or others, and contrary to what you may believe, this knowledge doesn't only pertain to medical facilities. Proper knowledge and training should be practiced everywhere you are to clean. Houses, office buildings, schools, church's also have worry of transferring infectious diseases due to the fact they have employees of their own and are generally high trafficked areas for customers, clients, delivery personal and you never know if one of them happen to have a transmittable disease, BP's are not something that can be visibly seen, they're invisible to the eye, so precautionary measures should be implemented into all cleanings for all your business practices in an attempt on keeping the team safe, your clients and staff safe, and to stop the spread of bloodborne pathogens. It eliminates the possibility of costly OSHA fines, creates a clean environment, protects employees who handle sharps bins, biohazard waste, or any other potentially contaminated objects.

In order to reduce or eliminate the hazards of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, an employer must implement an exposure control plan for the worksite with details on employee protection measures similar to a fire evacuation plan. The plan must also describe how an employer will use engineering and work practice controls, personal protective clothing and equipment, employee training, medical surveillance, hepatitis B vaccinations, and other provisions as required by OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard in case of exposure to a infectious disease. Knowing how to protect yourself and others against potential exposure and knowing what to do in the case of exposure is of the upmost importance. It saves you and emergency personal time and money. Having this knowledge allows you to be cautious in procedures when working with bloodborne pathogens.

Three reasons that cleaning employees and staff know about bloodborne pathogens. The first reason is to prevent themselves from getting sick and prevent from spreading the infection. By applying Universal precautions approach that blood and certain body fluids from all patients be considered potentially infectious. Second, understanding and knowing what type of bloodborne pathogens and how they are transmitted. By knowing that they are working in an environment that potential exposing them to AIDS, HBV and HCV. Which can be transmitted through unprotected openings in the skin, mucous membranes, and penetration. This will help them to be extremely cautious by wearing appropriate PPE, putting blood /infections bedding and needles in the appropriate recycle bins. Third reason, knowing how to report exposure and cleaning up one according to the guidelines that that is the OSHA guidelines. Reporting exposure to pathogens helps provide care to the one expose and prevent transmission of the pathogen. Cleaning up contained areas with OSHA approved products and using them according to their directions. This will prevent further transmission of the pathogen.

It is important to understand the risks of bloodborne pathogens. Having the training and knowledge of how to properly handle bloodborne pathogens is a very important part of cleaning and should always be handled properly by cleaning staff and employees.

Just like healthcare workers cleaning service employees come in contact with these situations more often than most. You will need to use the proper Personal Protective Equipment such as gloves, eye protection, and masks. That's why it is important to understand the risks. By taking precautions you should treat all blood and bodily fluids as if they were infectious.

Knowing how to use universal precautions. Disposing of sharp objects in the proper bin. Knowing what to do if you are stuck by a needle, sharp object or get blood or other potentially infectious materials in your eyes, nose, mouth, or on broken skin.  Not knowing how to handle bloodborne pathogens could be detrimental to the employee and staff’s health.

In my company, we are just going to be dealing mainly with homicide, suicides and un-attended deaths. So we won't be working much with mold at this time. However, I do believe it is important to understand mold and how to remove it in case I do start to do mold remediation.

After getting established with my business, I would like to expand our services to better suit the community and their needs. Alot of crime scene cleaning services also do fire, water and other restorations. Having the knowledge to do it all will benefit the company in the long run. It gives the community more choices in who they want to perform the job. Some companies can get overwhelmed and not have time to do the job right away which means the client has to wait to get back in their home. Having multiple companies that do mold and fire restoration makes everyone happy.
