Bloodborne pathogens can be extremely infectious to humans and can cause some serious, permanent damage in some cases. Preventing yourself and the general public from exposure to these pathogens should be a top priority, especially to all those people in the cleaning industry.

As a commercial cleaner and housekeeper, exposure to these pathogens may not cross ones mind very often, if at all; but in reality the presence and exposure of these pathogens may be more likely than you think. Dentist's offices, doctor's offices, schools and other places that may house needles or bodily fluids may contain traces of these sometimes life threatening micro-organisms.

If one is employed as a cleaner or owns a cleaning business, being educated in bloodborne pathogens, implementing universal precautions, and protective practices can literally be life saving. For housekeepers and cleaners, especially with medical clients, not only is this knowledge important, it's their responsibility and duty.

    1. Employees are able to avoid exposure of bloodborne pathogens hence ensuring their safety. This is easily done by employees wearing Personal Protective Equipment that usually covers the body parts that come into close contact with potential hazards.

    2. Employees are able to know what to do when exposed to bloodborne pathogens. E.g., when an employee is exposed to a SHARP/ blood, the employee is able to know immediately he/she should wash the exposed area with clean running water and soap, then apply a disinfectant before seeking further medical attention.

    3. To identify employees who are at risk of bloodborne pathogens. An employee infected with HIV is able to know the importance of taking extra care when dealing with infectious waste materials because he/ she is more prone to infection due to his/ her immunity being low.

Cleaning employees are responsible for maintaining clean and safe environments in many industries. However, they are also at risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens. These can cause major health hazards. It is important for them to be knowledgeable about bloodborne pathogens and the best practices for preventing their transmission.

Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms present in human blood and bodily fluids that can cause infections. Some of these infections are, hepatitis B and C viruses and HIV. Cleaning employees can be exposed to these pathogens through contact with contaminated medical equipment, instruments, or surfaces. To prevent transmission, cleaning employees should use personal protective equipment (PPE such as gloves, face masks, and gowns,) properly dispose of contaminated materials, and clean and disinfect surfaces and equipment.

In addition to following proper infection control practices, cleaning employees should also be trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of bloodborne pathogen exposure. That way they know what to do if they suspect they have been exposed. By taking these precautions, cleaning employees can ensure that they are providing safe and clean environments while also protecting themselves from potential health hazards.

Keeping a clean environment is crucial, especially during a pandemic where hygiene is so essential for public health. In this case, cleaning staff need to have adequate knowledge of bloodborne pathogens to protect their own health, all while keeping the premises germ-free. Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms that are present in human blood that can cause diseases and infections. They include HIV, hepatitis B, and C, among others. Cleaning staff must know how to keep themselves safe, which is possible by educating them about these pathogens and the hazards they pose.

Cleaning staff need to be aware of the proper techniques and equipment when cleaning an area infected with blood borne pathogens. They should use personal protective gear such as gloves, face masks, and eye protection when cleaning. They should be trained to take precautions such as not touching their mouth, nose or eyes and having good hand hygiene practices like hand-washing with soap and water or using alcohol-based sanitizers. Any spills or wastes that contain fluids from the human body must be disinfected with effective disinfectants to guarantee the absence of pathogens.

Furthermore, cleaning staff should know how to identify potentially infectious material and the risks associated with handling them. They should have adequate knowledge of the different blood borne pathogens and their transmission risks. Proper protocols such as reporting and properly disposing of infected waste should be enforced to ensure any infected waste is contained. Providing regular training and refresher courses to the staff is crucial in keeping them informed of the latest cleaning methodologies and practices, and they should always be reminded of the importance of keeping the environment clean and germ-free.

In conclusion, cleaning employees and staff are the primary guardians of a clean and hygienic environment. Given the importance of hygiene and the prevalence rate of blood borne diseases, it is critical to educate them about blood borne pathogens. By enhancing their knowledge and providing them with the necessary equipment, they will be able to protect themselves and guarantee the safety of their clientele. This is especially important during a pandemic where cleaning measures must be taken to a higher level due to its highly contagious nature.

In our pursuit of cleanliness and hygiene, we often overlook the potential dangers lurking in the cleaning products we use on a daily basis. Conventional cleaning chemicals, commonly found in our homes and workplaces, can have harmful effects on our health and the environment. In contrast, natural green cleaning products offer a safer and more sustainable alternative. By exploring the harmful effects of everyday cleaning chemicals and the benefits of green alternatives, we can make informed choices that prioritize our well-being and the preservation of our planet.

    1. Indoor Air Pollution: Many conventional cleaning chemicals contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be released into the air, leading to indoor air pollution. Breathing in these toxic fumes can cause respiratory issues, allergies, and other health problems. Natural green cleaning products, on the other hand, are typically made from plant-based ingredients and do not emit harmful VOCs, improving indoor air quality and creating a healthier living and working environment.

    2. Chemical Residues: When we use chemical-based cleaners, they often leave behind residues on surfaces that can come into contact with our skin or be ingested. These residues may contain toxic substances, such as phthalates, formaldehyde, and chlorine, which can have detrimental effects on our health. Green cleaning products, made from natural and biodegradable ingredients, minimize the risk of chemical residues and provide a safer cleaning experience for both humans and pets.

    3. Water Pollution: Traditional cleaning chemicals can have a severe impact on our waterways. When these products are rinsed down the drain, they can contaminate our water sources, harming aquatic life and compromising water quality. In contrast, green cleaning products are typically biodegradable and do not contribute to water pollution, ensuring the preservation of our ecosystems and the sustainability of our water resources.

    4. Health Risks for Cleaning Professionals: Cleaning professionals are often exposed to cleaning chemicals on a regular basis, putting them at greater risk of adverse health effects. Studies have linked occupational exposure to cleaning chemicals with respiratory problems, dermatitis, and even certain cancers. By adopting green cleaning practices and using natural products, cleaning professionals can significantly reduce their exposure to harmful chemicals and protect their well-being.

    5. Sustainability and Environmental Impact: Conventional cleaning chemicals are often derived from non-renewable resources and produced through energy-intensive processes. Their production and disposal contribute to carbon emissions, depletion of natural resources, and environmental degradation. In contrast, green cleaning products are typically made from renewable resources and produced using sustainable practices, minimizing their carbon footprint and supporting a more eco-friendly approach to cleaning.

In conclusion, the harmful effects of everyday cleaning chemicals are undeniable, affecting our health and the environment. By embracing natural green cleaning products, we can mitigate these risks and create a safer, healthier, and more sustainable world. Let us make a conscious choice to prioritize our well-being and the preservation of our planet by opting for green cleaning alternatives. Together, we can contribute to a cleaner and greener future.
