Prior to Covid, janitorial staff in healthcare settings were generally undervalued and lacked appreciation for the skilled labor they provided on a day to day basis.   One thing the pandemic taught the healthcare community is the janitorial staff are not only the first step to infection control and the prevention of the spread of the virus, but they also became the unsung heroes of the pandemic.

In the height of the pandemic, we were inundated with horrible stories of death and the continuous spread of Covid.  What we did not hear enough of was the good work being done by janitors and their positive impact on minimizing the exposure to Covid in their respective environments.   For example, in the facility in which I work, our patients receive long term hospital level care and have extremely compromised immune systems.  This setting and their health issues combined with the pandemic could have been a recipe for disaster.  The janitors truly picked up their games during the pandemic.  Their attention to detail and dedication to the well being of the patients as well as staff was a key factor to how this hospital successfully endured during the pandemic with minimal outbreaks among staff and patients and where we had zero Covid related fatalities.

Janitorial staffs world-wide were on a learning curve of to how to improve cleaning and disinfecting all while attempting to prevent the spread of Covid.  They not only had less resources available as disinfectants and sanitizing agents were in short supply, but they also had to learn how to use new technologies and chemicals as the pandemic continued.   Janitors had more responsibilities, worked longer hours, and many had to over come staffing shortages.  With that being said, to work in this field the last few years has been challenging.  However, seeing the results of the work the janitors in this facility, it validates that without excellent attention to cleaning, disinfection, and an understanding of how to properly and safely care for a facility of this nature, this facility could have potentially had a far graver outcome.  They definitely proved their high value within the hospital system.

In any environment where cleaning is carried out, whether it's a hospital, a laboratory, or even a commercial office space, the knowledge and understanding of bloodborne pathogens is of paramount importance for cleaning employees and staff. Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms, such as viruses or bacteria, that can be present in blood or bodily fluids and can cause serious diseases if not handled properly. Cleaning employees are often on the front lines of maintaining cleanliness and hygiene, and they may come into contact with potentially contaminated materials. Therefore, having a comprehensive understanding of bloodborne pathogens is crucial for their safety and the safety of others.

First and foremost, knowledge about bloodborne pathogens enables cleaning employees to take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and prevent the spread of infections. They need to be aware of the potential risks associated with blood or bodily fluid exposure and understand the proper protocols for handling and disposing of contaminated materials. This includes using personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, and gowns, as well as following established procedures for cleaning and disinfection. By having this knowledge, cleaning employees can minimize their own exposure to bloodborne pathogens and reduce the risk of transmitting infections to others.

Furthermore, the awareness of bloodborne pathogens among cleaning employees and staff contributes to creating a safe and healthy environment for everyone. Effective cleaning practices not only help prevent the transmission of diseases but also promote a sense of trust and confidence among occupants and visitors. When employees and staff demonstrate their knowledge and expertise in handling potentially hazardous materials, it instills a sense of security that the environment is being properly managed. This is particularly crucial in high-risk settings such as healthcare facilities, where the presence of bloodborne pathogens is more likely. By maintaining a clean and pathogen-free environment, the risk of healthcare-associated infections can be significantly reduced, benefiting both patients and staff.

As a supervisor of Environmental Services in a LTACH, the importance of understanding how to keep my staff safe and teach them to understand the importance of blood born pathogens and how and when to don PPE is of the greatest priority.  Many of my staff are new to working in a healthcare facility and unaware of how important they are in the chain of infection control prior to training.  In fact, the majority have never heard of the term blood born pathogen, let alone know how to safely clean or treat a potentially contaminated area.   Additionally, being up to date on best practices and training supports me in being able to provide clear and concise training.

Patients admitted into an LTACH are considered long term. The janitors regularly interact with the patients and can develop relationships with them during their stays.  An unfortunate downside to this is as they become more accustomed and friendly with the patients, their familiarity and comfortableness can lead to an unintentional lack of adherence to our standards of care.  As the janitors are not privy to patients' medical information they can potentially put themselves at great risk for contracting a blood borne pathogen.  In these cases, the janitors need retraining.

In a supervisory role, the above is one example of how the janitors are continuously observed and reassessed.  As a primary educator within our EVS department, having a strong understanding of blood borne pathogens, how to clean, disinfect, don PPE, etc. is mandatory.  As a facility, we cannot expect to maintain a clean and safe hospital without this knowledge and having supervisors and educators with the ability to teach it to others.

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the impact that everyday cleaning chemicals have on our health and the environment. This awareness has led to a shift towards using natural green products. The International Janitorial Cleaning Services Association (IJCSA) has been at the forefront of this movement, promoting environmentally sustainable cleaning practices through its Green Cleaning Directory, available at https://www.ijcsa.org/Green-Cleaning-Services.

Conventional cleaning products often contain chemicals such as ammonia, chlorine bleach, and phosphates. These substances can be harmful to human health, causing respiratory issues, skin irritation, and eye problems. A study in the journal Environmental Health noted that using household cleaning sprays even once a week raised the risk of developing asthma. In contrast, “green cleaning products” are generally formulated with natural ingredients that are less harmful to human health. They still have effective cleaning properties but do not expose users or occupants to harsh chemicals.

In addition to the health benefits, using natural green products plays a significant role in environmental conservation. Traditional cleaning chemicals can contribute to air and water pollution. When released into the air, some of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in cleaning products contribute to the formation of smog and air pollution. When washed down the drain, chemicals such as phosphates can cause algal blooms in water bodies, which can lead to oxygen depletion and the death of aquatic life. On the other hand, “eco-friendly cleaning products” are often biodegradable and free from pollutants, ensuring that they do not contribute to environmental degradation.

Furthermore, adopting “green cleaning practices” can also lead to economic benefits in the long run. There is a growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible products and services. Companies that adopt green cleaning practices can attract a wider customer base, which can translate to increased profitability. Moreover, some “green cleaning products” are derived from renewable resources, making them more sustainable and sometimes more cost-effective in the long term compared to conventional cleaning products that rely on non-renewable resources.

In conclusion, the transition from conventional cleaning chemicals to natural green products is not just a trend, but a necessity for the well-being of individuals and the environment. The IJCSA Green Cleaning Directory is a valuable resource for those looking to make this change, offering a comprehensive list of service providers who are committed to employing environmentally responsible cleaning practices. Embracing green cleaning is a step towards creating healthier living spaces, promoting environmental sustainability, and contributing to economic growth in an ecologically responsible manner.

Title: Implementing a Mold Cleaning Operation: Elevating Business Standards

    Introduction:

In today's competitive business landscape, maintaining a clean and hygienic environment is of utmost importance. Mold infestations pose a significant threat not only to the aesthetics of a business but also to the health and well-being of its occupants. Therefore, implementing a comprehensive mold cleaning operation can greatly enhance the standards of any business, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for employees, customers, and visitors alike. This column delves into the benefits of such a program and outlines a strategic approach to successfully incorporating mold cleaning practices into your business.

    1. Protecting Health and Well-being:

Mold growth can have severe health implications, particularly for individuals with respiratory issues, allergies, or compromised immune systems. By implementing a mold cleaning program, businesses prioritize the well-being of their stakeholders. Regular mold inspections, immediate remediation, and preventative measures can minimize the risk of health-related complications, fostering a healthier environment and promoting employee satisfaction.

    2. Enhancing Aesthetics and Professionalism:

Mold growth can tarnish the appearance of any establishment, diminishing its visual appeal and professionalism. A comprehensive mold cleaning operation aims to eliminate unsightly mold patches, discoloration, and odors, thereby enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the business. A clean and well-maintained environment creates a positive impression on clients and customers, instilling confidence and trust in the services or products being offered.

    3. Preventing Structural Damage:

Mold growth is often accompanied by the degradation of building materials such as wood, drywall, and insulation. Over time, these materials can weaken, leading to structural damage and potential safety hazards. By regularly cleaning and addressing mold issues, businesses can protect their investments and prevent costly repairs, ensuring the longevity and stability of their premises.

    4. Complying with Regulations and Standards:

Many industries are subject to specific regulations and standards regarding cleanliness and hygiene. Implementing a mold cleaning program ensures compliance with such requirements, minimizing the risk of fines, legal repercussions, or reputational damage. By demonstrating a commitment to maintaining high standards, businesses can gain a competitive edge and build trust with regulatory bodies and customers alike.

    5. Increasing Efficiency and Productivity:

A clean and healthy work environment has a direct impact on employee productivity and efficiency. Mold contamination can lead to discomfort, allergies, and respiratory issues, negatively affecting employee morale and performance. A proactive mold cleaning operation mitigates these risks, fostering a conducive work environment that promotes employee well-being, satisfaction, and productivity.

Implementing a Mold Cleaning Operation: A Strategic Approach

    1. Initial Assessment: Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the premises to identify existing mold infestations, potential moisture sources, and areas prone to mold growth. Engage professional mold inspectors to ensure accurate evaluations and recommendations.

    2. Remediation and Cleaning Protocols: Develop standardized protocols for mold remediation and cleaning, considering best practices, industry guidelines, and the specific requirements of your business. Assign trained personnel or hire professional mold remediation services to carry out the cleaning operations effectively.

    3. Regular Inspections: Establish a schedule for regular mold inspections to identify early signs of mold growth and prevent widespread contamination. Conduct inspections after any incidents involving water damage or increased humidity levels.

    4. Training and Awareness: Provide training to employees on mold prevention, early detection, and reporting procedures. Foster awareness of the importance of maintaining a clean and mold-free environment, encouraging employees to actively participate in mold prevention efforts.

    5. Continuous Improvement: Regularly review and update the mold cleaning program to incorporate new research, technologies, and best practices. Stay informed about emerging trends and advancements in mold remediation to ensure the highest standards are maintained.

Are you looking for a professional service to remove mold from your building after a flood? Maybe you should be! Flooding causes damage to buildings in several ways, but one effect of flooding that may be overlooked is outbreaks of mold. Mold grows both indoors and outdoors, wherever there is sufficient moisture. A flood can provide that moisture. Search the Flood Damage Directory by location to find a service near you.

Why does mold matter? Not only is it unsightly and a source of unpleasant odor; mold actually damages property and causes health problems for humans. When mold grows on a surface, it actually eats away at whatever organic material is present. This can destroy your valuable possessions and/or weaken structural components of your building. Molds also release spores, which when inhaled can cause a variety of health problems. These include allergic reactions, asthma, headaches, and irritation. Some species of mold also produce toxins called mycotoxins.

Why should you hire a professional mold cleaning service? While some smaller mold outbreaks can be handled by yourself, medium or large outbreaks should be handled by professionals who have access to the right equipment and training. Without proper containment measures, efforts to remove mold may actually cause it to spread. Much of the time, mold is hidden behind or inside objects, appliances, and walls. Professional cleaners will know how to access and remove hidden mold without spreading the spores to new areas. The Flood Damage Directory can help you find an IJCSA-certified cleaning service in your area.
