Help minimize the exposure of bloodborne pathogens to employees and yourself, is an integral part of housekeeping or janitorial services.  Our susceptibility increases depending on the type of cleaning we are doing, and is not limited.  However, maintaining universal precautions can decrease your chances of that exposure and contact.

By placing emphasis on universal precautions with employees you can reduce the likelihood of being exposed to diseases and illnesses such HIV and Hep B.  However, these are not the only types of illnesses that could potential harm an employee.  Unfortunately, there is potential to exposure by open wounds (cuts, scratches) on your hands, or arms as an example.  You can also be open to possible infection through mucus membranes or exposure with open needles.  It is important to wear appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) while cleaning to limit this.  Gloves, face masks, and gowns help limit these exposures and keep employees safe.  Educating employees on the importance of PPE during cleaning can greatly reduce that risk along with proper disposal.  We do not know if another person has these illnesses, but with PPE we can protect ourselves from that potential harm.  Treating each area we clean, as if it had already been exposed to a potentially harmful illness or disease.

Cleaning this way, not only protects yourself, your employee, but also treats the area limiting anyone else's exposure.  This helps contain the spread of illness, infection and disease.

Janitors play a vital role in keeping our surroundings safe and clean. Every day, they ensure that our schools, offices, hospitals, public places, factorys, free of dirt, germs, and waste. Their hard work prevents the spread of diseases and creates a healthy environment where people can learn, work and live comfortably. Without janitors, our daily spaces would quickly become messy and  out of control.

Beyond cleaning, janitors also help maintain buildings and equipment. They often Handel small repairs, restock supplies, and make sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. Their attention to detail ensures that lights are working, restrooms are stocked, garbags are empty, windows are clean, and hallways are sale to walk through. This makes everyone's day to day life easier and more productive, even if we don't always notice their efforts.

Janitors deserve appreciation because they preform some of the hardest and most essential work in our community. They work early mornings, late nights, after close, and weekend to keep places clean for others. Janitors make our world a cleaner, healthier, and better place to live every single day.  Their contributions remind us that every role in society, no matter how humble it may seem, ALL of us play a  role in this world, janitors are essential. Janitorial staff come with all kinds of different titles just do me a favor and thank more janitors/maids when you see them cleaning!

In the cleaning and sanitation industry, employees often serve on the front lines of public health protection. Whether they are disinfecting a medical facility, cleaning a restroom, or responding to a biohazard situation, cleaning professionals can encounter unseen risks every day—among them, bloodborne pathogens such as Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), and HIV. These infectious microorganisms can be transmitted through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids, and even a small exposure can lead to serious health consequences. For this reason, it is essential that every cleaning employee and supervisor not only understands the dangers of bloodborne pathogens but also knows how to protect themselves and others through proper training, protective equipment, and safe work practices.

Knowledge about bloodborne pathogens is not merely a compliance issue—it is a matter of personal and team safety. When cleaning staff are properly trained in OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, they gain the confidence and skills to handle potentially infectious materials safely. They learn to use Universal Precautions, meaning they treat all blood and body fluids as potentially infectious, no matter the source. They also understand the importance of wearing gloves, goggles, and other personal protective equipment (PPE), and of following strict procedures for cleaning, waste disposal, and decontamination. This training empowers workers to prevent accidents before they happen and to respond calmly and effectively if an exposure occurs.

A well-informed team also demonstrates professionalism and care for the clients they serve. When cleaning employees understand the “why” behind their safety protocols, they take greater pride in their work, knowing their diligence safeguards not only their own health but also that of their coworkers, clients, and community. In an industry built on trust and attention to detail, awareness of bloodborne pathogens reflects a company’s commitment to integrity and responsibility. For cleaning businesses, fostering this culture of safety means more than compliance—it means ensuring that every employee goes home healthy, protected, and valued at the end of each day.
