    Janitors and the janitorial staff members play an especially important role to our everyday lives.  If you are an employee, consumer, or business owner, janitorial services definitely play an vital role, whether it is directly or indirectly. As cleaning professionals our primary responsibility is to clean and disinfect in order to prevent the spread of diseases. For example, COVID-19 has definitely brought light to what we really do and how essential the janitorial profession is to the world.

    One key aspect of a janitorial company is training.  Janitorial professionals are constantly directly exposed to the dangers of the workplace (such as COVID-19).  It is imperative that staff members are professionally trained in order to prevent self-injury, unprotected exposure, and most importantly cross contamination.  Cross contamination can cause an entire building to become ill, this includes employees & customers

    Like any other field your customers are your priority. There will be times when a customer is unhappy with a situation, and how you handle those is a huge part of your business. Answe the call, make things right, that’s all what customer service is about. 

    There will also be times you are asked to go above the original call of duty. Don’t be afraid to answer that call. Customer service is all about attitude towards the customers and their clientele. Always start with the customer being number one.

    Medical or healthcare facilities are know for nosocomial infections. Having knowledge of this helps gear yourself for cleaning commercial spaces. There has to be a very high standard when cleaning medical or healthcare facilities because you do not want to spread a disease due to inadequate cleaning.     With the knowledge of cleaning medical facilities we can apply these practices to cleaning non-medical facilities. Firstly, training of the employees. All employees will need to go through the blood-borne pathogen trainingChemical Hazard Training, and medical cleaning Training. This will ensure adequate preparedness for the safety of the employee and the clients.

    Secondly, I will require employees to wear PPE just like cleaning a hospital. Providing employees with disposable gloves, aprons etc. Protecting business reputation starts with taking care of your employee. Every employee should come to work knowing that she/he will go back to his/her family safe.  

    Thirdly, the use of effective chemicals that are CDC recommended and approved by EPA. To see the list of approved chemicals click here. This to ensure that you are not creating a false sense of safety to employees and the clients. These chemicals should also be used with the right PPEs and the right concentrations.

    Finally, keeping the cleaning records. Making a comprehensive list of all areas being cleaned and once cleaned an employee signing off as well as being verified by a supervisor. These records include chemical titrations if you are using concentrated chemicals. This will ensure that you can be able to provide information on your cleaning practices if called upon.

    It is very important when advertising for your business as a residential cleaner that you are very cautious about giving any misleading signs that you are there for more than just cleaning. When meeting with a new client you should dress accordingly and stay professional. While working you should always have your keys and phone on you just in case something happens.

    As a residential home cleaner you should always make sure that you respect your clients home. No matter what you find or where you find you should always remember that it is property of the homeowners. You should also remember that no before or after pictures should be taken unless the homeowner agrees.

    Janitors are sometimes viewed as insignificant and are oftentimes passed by or ignored. Today, they are more needed than ever before. Trained Janitors are in high demand. They are recognized as essential workers more so now than ever before.
