We now live in a time of uncertainty, where no one knows any one truly.  This comes down to the point of keeping clean.  It is extremely important to practice proper and safe measures when dealing with any kind of cleaning or emergency response.  Its not just cleaning, put on gloves and go.  There is a safety protocol to follow as well as a step by step guide to protect employees, and owners.

With cleaning normally comes a punch list.  Step 1- completion of job.  Each punch list should start with what type of clean are we dealing with, what is the severity, what caused it.  Ultimately, gloves and mask are first thing.  Also depending on what is being cleaned and the process may require extra PPE.  But gloves and a face mask are key at a minimum.

We don't walk into a job without proper safety gear.  With virus's and disease such as HIV, HBV, Hepatitis, and so forth some things are very important.  Such as not pushing down on trash, and being cautious about tight areas as theres no way of telling if there is a syringe or something that can puncture skin.  If someone else is sick or there are body fluids present, sanitization is key.  In a situation such as that each staff member would need to be suited with PPE gear to prevent catching or transferring something, or getting injured or sick themselves.

We as people are social, with that comes the inherent risk of cross contamination.  To prevent this all staff should be trained in exercising protocols from beginning to decontamination of themselves before getting into a vehicle, eating, drinking, smoking etc.

Most cleaning companies just clean and when asked to remove stains or bad order from a room, they may not think that the carpet could be the reason for the odor from spills or dropped food. You providing a knowledgeable and professional service.

The main reason for cleaning employees and staff to know about blood borne pathogens is safety and health.  Not knowing what blood pathogens are or how to prevent the spread is key in protecting oneself as well as family and friends.   Also, knowing how blood pathogens transfer from person to person is important knowledge so that one can properly clean up after a possibly contaminated area or facility and prevent infectious diseases from spreading, such as HIV and HBV.

It is important to know what the proper equipment to use when cleaning vomit, blood, or any bodily fluids that transfer pathogens such as gloves, eye protection, and disinfectant chemicals that kill pathogens.  Also, never eat, drink, smoke, or apply lip balm or make up in areas with possible blood borne pathogen exposure and never manually compress trash or splash or splatter when cleaning up.  It is also important to follow proper protocol and contact your supervisor immediately if you believe you came in contact with blood borne pathogens.

Knowing how pathogens travel is very important so that proper precautions can be taken in cleaning and discarding contaminated equipment properly.  Properly disposing of equipment and materials used to clean blood, saliva, or vomit is also key in possibly spreading pathogens that spread viruses and disease.  Having color coded containers or bags such as red or orange helps to easily identify possibly contaminated items and should be used for blankets, sheets, and towels so that anyone handling these items can take extra precautions when handling and can wash and sanitize them properly.  Also using tongs and spatulas when picking up contaminated material decrease the possibility of spreading possibly contaminated pathogens.  Properly cleaning the equipment used to clean up blood borne pathogens is crucial as well.  Always clean all the equipment that came in contact with possible pathogens and always decontaminate surfaces as well as washing machines, mop, mop bucket, spatulas, tongs and every piece of equipment that may have been exposed.

Greeting the customer with a positive attitude and the willingness to provide a service that generates the concerns and needs of the customer can develop a longtime relationship in doing business.

It is so important for rmployees to know about Bloodborne Pathogens to create awareness and education to the possible exposure to infectious diseases.  It’s critical for each employee to treat every situation as if they are being exposed to bloodborne pathogen when cleaning.  This mind set will create an environment of caution.  This aligns with the CDC that establishes the “Universal Precautions.”

Also, it’s important to educate the employees on the definition of Bloodborne Pathogen.  If the employee has the correct understanding, this will alleviate any misunderstanding down the road. “Bloodborne Pathogen defined are pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and can cause disease in humans. These pathogens include, but are not limited to, Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) (associated with AIDS).

Finally, informing the employee of the importance wear personal protective equipment (PPE).  In addition to never eating, drinking or smoking or applying lip balm in an area where there is the possibility of bloodborne pathogen exposure.
