It is important for all employees to know and understand bloodborne pathogens and what to do in these situations. For starters, bloodborne pathogens are infectious micro organisms in human blood that can cause diseases such as HBV or HIV or HCV. It is mandatory that you wear disposable latex gloves and protective eyewear in every situation and in others you may also have to wear a gown and face mask when handling blood or other bodily fluids. You are to consider bodily fluids as infectious when handling them.

You should never eat, drink, smoke or apply lip balm anywhere near bloodborne pathogens. You should also never compress garbage bags as there may be sharps in them. Sharps are to be disposed of in appropriately colored and labeled boxes specifically for sharps, usually red or orange boxes. Soiled laundry should also be placed in appropriate colored bags.

If you think you may have been exposed, talk to your supervisor immediately as well as your physician. Keep an eye on your symptoms. It can take years to feel any signs or symptoms of exposure. It is the law for employers to have an updated Exposure Control Plan. Your employer will give you one upon request. Your employer has to keep certain records for 3 years.

Janitors are important to our everyday lives because they keep our schools and workplaces safe, clean, and free from bloodborne pathogens, which can potentially cause fatal disease. Without the work of janitors, students, workers, and the general public would be at greater risk for injury and illness.

Janitors maintain floors in buildings and must look for anything on the property where they work that is unsafe or in need of repair. They must also respond to any unexpected problems that arise or to requests that are brought to their attention.

By following proper cleaning and disinfecting practices, with appropriate chemicals and techniques, janitors greatly reduce the risk of illness from bloodborne pathogens, which are found in blood and other bodily fluids and can cause serious or even fatal disease. Janitors are responsible for not only cleaning and disinfecting bathrooms, but also for ensuring they are properly stocked with necessary items such as toilet paper, paper towels, and soap.

Janitors perform a variety of functions, all the with goal of making sure the buildings they work in are suitable for everyone to use and enjoy.
