Here at our facility, I plan to implement a GREEN program for training students enrolled in the Custodial and Building Maintenance Program at Carl D. Perkins Vocational Training Center. We currently use Simply Green with the controlled handle and also use several common all natural household cleaning products like baking soda and vinegar.

I plan to continue researching and figuring out the easiest ways to use these products on the scale that we need. I want my students to know the difference between toxic and non-toxic products and the reasons we want to avoid and/or use them.

The benefits to having a green clean program is not having as many health problems. Green cleaning products aren’t harmful to kids, pets, or home life. No more use of chemicals to get rid of germs. Green cleaning items don’t leave be hide an awful smell when one is using them. People who buy the green clean items don’t have to buy them as often, because one doesn’t have to use a big amount. Green clean products are ecofriendly and everyone likes that.

The health benefits of green clean products is having better indoor air quality. People with asthma have less asthma attacks, because they don’t have to smell the cleaning chemicals. The most important is reducing the exposure to toxic chemicals. When using chemicals to clean ones house there is a good chance kids get that cleaning chemical in their month, eye, and on their skin. This will make them itchy, having skin irritation, and getting sick. The same goes with people who have house hold pets. When using green clean products people don’t have to worry about their kids and animals getting sick, because of all the natural ingredients used to make the product. Green cleaning has the same effect on germs as chemical cleaning products do, but the green clean products are healthier for people, because they aren’t toxic. Instead of having that strong bleach smell from a chemical item, people could be smelling fresh earthy smells from green clean items. People can save money when buying green clean products, because they won’t go through the item as fast as they would with a chemical item. All green clean products are made with natural ingredients making them more ecofriendly.

Jemsion and Mason’s plan on implementing a green clean service program for a proposed facility includes: first looking at the proposed facility and taking in account the size, square footage, and what needs to be done. The next step would be to find out what the facility is being used for and what is the foot traffic of the building. Last a list of cleaning products currently being used, if any, would be collected.

After gathering this information then a plan can be implemented. Jemison and Mason would collaborate with the owner on types of green cleaning products and the best way to use them and when cleaning should take place.

With so many negatives that come along with traditional cleaning methods, going green seems like a no thought choice. So many positives can come by just making this simple choice to be more aware of what is in the products we are cleaning with.

Harmful chemicals are everywhere and we come in contact with them no matter where we are or what we are doing. The choice to switch and provide a natural clean vs using something that can leave harsh residues on surfaces and leave lingering particles in the air that we are then forced to breathe in can be very hard on our respiratory system causing irritation in our lungs, causing wheezing and shortness in breath.

Harsh chemicals can also affect our eyes causing itchiness, redness and just be plain out irritating. These are just a few of the adverse side effects and that doesn’t account for the fact that these chemicals can also be absorbed through our skin which can be even more damaging. Since there is no filter to dilute these out, they can have direct effects on our liver and kidney functions.

Every time we make a conscious choice to use a green product we are not only working to make it a healthier and safer location for those cleaning, but also any person working in these areas. We are also doing our part to help protect the environment by reducing our carbon footprint and we are able to help reduce any additional effects to our ozone layer.

Green products are natural which makes them safer to use since there are no chemicals and can be found in nature. There are no adverse effects when going back into the environment and requires no additional forms of processing to make water ways safe or having to worry about what toxic gas could be made if they end up mixing together in water processing plants.

Saying that you are a green cleaner isn’t enough, you need to make sure you are working with someone that is certified in this manner. Thanks to IJCSA you can be sure that the cleaning company you are using has been through the training and is aware of the processes involved in being green. Some of the products we used every day to clean our surroundings can affect our health and the environment. These cleaners contain chemicals that have been linked to different common symptoms like allergies, skin reactions, headaches, depression, dizziness and asthma, just to mention some of them. Many chemical makers do not label their products with all of the ingredients and many of us don't look at what a cleaning product is made of.

Now, after learning how harmful so many of the popular cleaning products are we have started looking at the labels of the products that we use to serve our clients. We started using more natural green cleaning products like vinegar, baking soda and lemon having the same results.

We are happy because going green is a benefit for our customers and the environment.
