The importance of knowledge on bloodborne pathongens and risks for cleaning and employees.

Bloodborne pathogens; what are they? They are infections microorganisms in human blood that can cause disease in humans. Some of the most common include hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Hepatitis C being the most common.

The cleaning community is at a greater risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Because of this we need to understand the risks and how to prevent exposure. BBP can be transmitted in many ways. Here are some of the most common ways this occurs, accidental punctures from contaminated needles, contaminated bodily fluids, and sexual contact. 

Taking precautions to prevent exposures are of upmost importance. First and foremost, we should treat all material as infectious, following the universal precautions. Here are some standard precautions, using PPE, and following work practice controls. 

In all, educating ourselves, and our employees on bloodborne pathogens is key to our safety and the ones around us. Stay educated and aware my fellow cleaners!
