The Importance of Bloodborne Safety Precaution

31 Jul 2023 9:40 PM | Deleted user

Bloodborne pathogens are microscopic organisms present in blood. They can cause disease and illness. There are several diseases that can be passed through blood, Hepatitis B (HBV), HIV & AIDS to name a few. OSHA developed a set of universal standards as guidelines for the employees of medical institutions. Now the standards have been adopted by other industries that may be exposed to bloodborne and other infectious body fluids

The best way to prevent infection is through education. It is important to understand body fluids and items that have come in contact with body fluid can be infected. Open wounds, needles, soiled clothing & liens, and personal sanitary items should be treated as potentially infectious. Following universal guidelines can prevent the spread of infection. Proper precaution is a safety measure for the cleaner and the customer.

OSHA has required each job site with risk of exposure  have a written exposure control plan. It should have detailed safety precaution and procedures in case of exposure. It is also used to maintain documentation or records of exposure incidents. The importance of bloodborne safety is crucial to the public and the cleaning staff. With proper precaution cleaners can successful disinfect an area exposed to blood and or other infectious fluids.
