Implementing Our Green Cleaning Program

02 Feb 2025 11:54 PM | Cecilia Gutierrez

We at VitalSpaces Facility Services don't just clean. We are a green cleaning certified leader in the green cleaning industry committed to a cleaning process that delivers a lasting positive impact on lives and the environment. We achieve this by prioritizing the use of non-toxic, chemical-free, 100% natural cleaning products and techniques that protect the health of our clients, our cleaning staff, indoor air quality and the environment. Indeed, we don’t just clean. We proudly deliver pristine cleaning results while prioritizing sustainability with products that are tough on germs and grime, but gentle on people, pets and the planet.

To achieve this, when initiating our green cleaning program, we sought out ready-made cleaning products that met our strict standards before incorporating them into our daily cleaning routines. Products that are free from harmful chemicals but are as effective as off-the-shelf cleaning solutions. This research process was an important first step because we were aware that there are a multitude of cleaning products on the market that are non-transparent about their ingredients, that bear the word “natural” on their labels and that are sold in packaging designed to make them appear eco-friendly, but they contain synthetic ingredients and chemicals. In addition to reading labels, we seek out products that are certified by organizations which research toxic chemicals in household products such as the EPA who awards their EPA Safer Choice Seal to products that have met their rigorous standards for performance and safety. By following these indispensable steps, we can rest assured that we are meeting the requirements of a green cleaning certified program.

We also purchase durable cleaning tools and microfiber cloths and mop heads because microfiber is a more absorbent cloth that is effective with less cleaning solutions, it's also more effective at collecting dust and dirt, and they last longer. We also use refillable containers, buy in bulk and recycle packaging. These practices along with composting biodegradable waste such as paper towels help us do our part to cut down on waste and reduce landfills.

Another crucial part of green cleaning programs is the proper disposal of used cleaning liquids which should never be disposed of down sinks, toilets or in trash bins because they can seep into dirt and groundwater, wash into storm drains and end up in bodies of water where they harm fish and other aquatic life. This in turn causes harm to the fishing industry, reduces the availability of fish for our consumption, and is commonly a violation of local ordinances. To properly dispose of any household chemicals, it's best to read their label for disposal instructions and dispose of them with their labels intact at hazardous waste collection sites.

In addition, carefully selected ready-made cleaning agents we utilize, we also make our own non-toxic DIY cleaners. We use baking soda mixed with water as an abrasive to clean ovens and hydrogen peroxide or vinegar mixed with water as glass cleaners. But here again, like with any cleaning product, it’s important to avoid using them in excess because doing so can cause physical harm. For example, the strong smell of white vinegar can be irritating to eyes and inhaling baking soda can irritate the respiratory tract.

Finally, once we were confident that we sourced the best products and tools, we initiated a green cleaning staff training program. We established comprehensive lessons that educate our staff about the health and environmental benefits of green cleaning, effective and safe use of natural cleaning products, tools and equipment, workplace safety, customer service, recycling and proper waste disposal, our green cleaning goals and expected outcomes. Monitoring, evaluating, continuing education and client feedback ensures our company's continued success and has resulted in higher employee satisfaction, retention and company pride.

Our green cleaning certification underscores our commitment to supporting green cleaning values and health. By following the guidelines while maintaining our high standards of cleanliness we at VitalSpaces Facility Services have created an atmosphere that prioritizes well-being that has enhanced our customer’s satisfaction in a way that only a pristine green clean space can do because a green clean space is much more than its spotless surfaces. It’s a place that nourishes life and well-being.
