The Importance of Bloodborne Pathogen Training

10 Jun 2025 10:08 PM | Hilary Woods

Bloodborne pathogen training is critical for cleaning employees due to their frequent exposure to environments where people live and work and thus may have infectious materials present. Whether working in healthcare facilities, public spaces, or private businesses, cleaning staff often encounter blood or bodily fluids that pose a risk of transmitting diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV. Proper training equips employees with the knowledge to identify hazards, use personal protective equipment (PPE) effectively, and follow correct disposal procedures for contaminated materials. This not only safeguards their health but also helps ensure the safety of those who use the spaces they clean.

My own experience receiving bloodborne pathogen training as a teacher highlights its value across professions. In schools, we were trained to respond safely to incidents involving injuries or illnesses where students or staff could be bleeding or vomiting. Although it wasn’t a daily concern, the training made us more aware of proper hygiene practices, emergency protocols, and the importance of using gloves and disinfectants appropriately. That foundation in safety became even more relevant when I transitioned to the work of cleaning, where exposure risks may be more frequent and the consequences of improper handling may be more severe.

For cleaning employees, consistent and comprehensive bloodborne pathogen training empowers them to protect themselves while performing vital duties. It fosters a culture of awareness and responsibility, reducing the risk of workplace infections and enhancing overall public health. Given the parallels between my experience as a teacher and the roles of cleaning staff, it’s clear that this type of training provides essential life skills that transcend job titles, reinforcing the importance of being prepared for health and safety risks in any environment.
