Proper Training for Handling Bloodborne Pathogens

12 Oct 2019 11:51 AM | Deleted user

While much of the focus of bloodborne pathogen protection is focused on the healthcare industry, exposure can occur in many settings outside of health care facilities. Cleaning and maintenance staff should be properly trained in how to protect themselves and others from bloodborne pathogens as well, as should all janitorial services employees.

All body fluids and waste should be treated as though it contains pathogens, whether  or not you know the person the fluids are from. A few moments of prevention before cleaning up such waste should be a habit, not a hassle. Prevention should include disposable gloves, googles, face masks and proper OSHA approved cleaning products. All employees should know where these items are and how to properly use them.

When your staff is properly trained in bloodborne pathogen protection, they will create habits of safety that reduce their risk of exposure to pathogens even if they aren't routinely exposed to them. By helping your staff be fully trained in how to handle the potential of infection, you not only prevent their health from being at risk, but you also help ensure they cannot expose others. Proper employee training in bloodborne pathogen protection helps protect far more than your employee.
