Bloodborne Pathogens

Cleaning employees play a vital role in controlling the spread of bloodborne pathogens, thus reducing the risk of disease in humans. Therefore, they must know and understand what bloodborne pathogens are, the dangers they pose to human health, and how to protect themselves and others who may be at risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

Bloodborne pathogens are disease-causing microorganisms found in blood. Examples of bloodborne pathogens are the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Bloodborne pathogens enter the body through various ways, such as the eyes, nose, mouth, and skin. Without taking the necessary precautions, bloodborne pathogens such as HBV and HIV can potentially infect humans and cause serious or even fatal disease.

Cleaning employees can protect themselves and others from bloodborne pathogens by following universal protocols, that is, treating blood and other bodily fluids as potentially infectious and acting accordingly. Wearing personal protective equipment including gloves and safety glasses is critical when working around bloodborne pathogens, as is washing hands after coming in contact with potentially infectious materials. Cleaning employees who regularly work around bloodborne pathogens are responsible for cleaning up bodily fluids, removing soiled linens, disinfecting contaminated surfaces, and disposing of hazardous waste such as used needles or other sharps that can puncture the skin and cause infection. Following proper procedures for cleaning, disinfecting, and removing or discarding contaminated items helps keep people safe from bloodborne pathogens and the diseases they cause.
