Bloodborne Pathogen Training Is So Important - Life Or Death

24 May 2020 8:32 PM | Mike Kocher

Bloodborne Pathogen training is important as it will properly prepare affected workplace individuals for needed procedures and equipment when performing work.  It is also important to protect those around them while they perform their cleaning tasks.  The pathogens of concern include but are not limited to HIV, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B among others.  Bloodborne pathogens can be transmitted when body fluid(blood,Saliva, etc...) come in contact with an unprotected person.

Proper Protective equipment use is critical for protecting individuals from exposure to BBPs.  Such equipment includes gloves(latex or nitrile), gowns, masks, eye protection and face shields.  Following Universal Precautions is the approach by which all human body fluids are treated as if they are known to be infected with BBPs. By using universal precautions, when handling or cleaning items or surfaces, potential exposure is minimizes.

Finally, exercising good hygiene is key to minimizing the potential hazards when dealing with BBPs. Properly washing hands before and after potential exposure as well as throughout the day is critical.  Keeping the work area clean and free from debris will provide additional safeguards from transmission.  Training all employees in the workplace these key elements will greatly decrease potential transmission of BBPs
