The Importance of Being Informed about BloodBorne Pathogens

08 Aug 2020 8:09 PM | Dorit Levy

It is vital that cleaning employees and staff know about bloodborne pathogens for many reasons. Having the right knowledge and attitude towards bloodborne pathogens ensures all employees take universal precautions to protect themselves and those around them. Cleaning employees and staff are at a particularly increased risk of being exposed to these sorts of pathogens. As an employer, the health of employees and customers alike is of the utmost importance. Making certain that employees are properly educated about bloodborne pathogens is the first step in ensuring everyone’s safety.

Bloodborne pathogens are disease-causing organisms that can be present in human blood and body fluids. They are microscopic, and therefore it is impossible to know whether any bodily fluids are contaminated or not. Employees and cleaning staff must be aware of this so that they can protect themselves; if responding to any situation in which they may come into contact with body fluids, they must take proper precautions, including using personal protective equipment. As an employer, it is of utmost importance to develop an Exposure Control Plan to assist employees in knowing what the proper steps to take are should they ever be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.

Mindset is the most important aspect when it comes to safety. Those who are properly educated about the risks of bloodborne pathogens will take the proper precautions to protect themselves. As an employer, making sure that your employees are aware of proper procedures regarding bloodborne pathogens can help keep everyone safe.
