    What are Bloodborne pathogens?

Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms that are found in blood that can cause disease in humans. Some examples include but are not limited to hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV. Healthcare workers and cleaning professionals are at a high risk of being exposed to or infected, there for Bloodborne pathogen training is of the utmost importance to keep your staff protected.

To keep your staff proactive on protecting themselves from Bloodborne pathogens or other possible infectious materials (OPIM). Providing ongoing training and fun quizzes to win a small prize can be a good way. Make sure they understand when and how to use the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), for example donning and doffing (putting on and removing) your PPE can be part of the quiz with live demonstrations.

Protecting your staff is more than just about keeping them safe. It's about keeping the public safe and if we all do our part and be proactive we can do it.

Cleanliness is just as important in a residence or commercial setting if not more important in a healthcare setting. In healthcare facilities, there are many different people with a variety of illnesses and other issues occurring. Because of this, the importance of keeping these facilities clean increase everyday. The purpose of cleaning these facilities is not only to decrease the amount of germs in specific areas, but to also avoid cross contamination.

Cross contamination is when the transfer of harmful bacteria from one person, place, or object to another. In order to prevent these harmful bacteria from spreading, we clean. As a former emergency medical technician, I have experienced different people with different diseases and each person with a specific disease or illness required different ways to clean. These bacteria can be transferred through airborne particles or even physical touch.

Properly cleaning a healthcare facility with the proper equipment and supplies decreases the likelihood of germs spreading and can aid in preventing others from getting sick as well. In order to do this, it's important to remember that after each patient gets discharged the room needs to already be cleaned prior to a new patient entering because of the high risk of the germs that are being transferred in that room and the objects in that room being used throughout the day.

There are many ways to implement medical cleaning practices into other residential & commercial cleaning situations. The practice of removing trash, disinfecting activity, and maintaining a neat and clean appearance should always be of utmost priority to a cleaner. Whether in a residential home or medical facility, to maintain cleanliness and protect the safety of yourself and others around, the same precautions should also be taken.

Removing trash is a simple task, yet possibly detrimental if done carelessly. Making sure you wear gloves while replacing the bag as well as not pushing down on any matter with your hands, is important to remember. There may be unknown S.H.A.R.P objects not immediately visible, and can be hazardous if handled improperly. If you're ever struck with a S.H.A.R.P object be sure to wash your hands, stop the bleeding, clean the wound, apply an ointment, cover the wound, change the dressing, and watch for signs of infection.

Disinfecting activity should also be implemented outside of medical practices. Although a surface appears to be clean, there are likely viruses and bacteria invisible to the naked eye. Ensuring you are using a disinfectant can rid the home of these germs and prevent them from spreading. Using the cleaners for the recommended time on the product's label is also crucial, as most products need time to sit before drying and cleaning to their full potential. Be sure to check each product's application process, and recommended wet time.

Maintaining a neat and clean appearance is also important. Although sometimes a dirty job, maintaining a neat and clean appearance displays a level of pride you take in your work. In order to maintain a good level of trust with clients, you must ensure your customers that you are the right person for the job. It is difficult to place trust in someone who doesn’t take pride in presenting themselves, but claims to take pride in their work. Dressing up is not necessary, however making sure your hair is out of the way, nails are cleanly, and clothes are groomed are immediate ways to make good, lasting impressions.

Properly cleaning and disinfecting Healthcare facilities is important for your safety, the patients safety and other healthcare workers. Preventing the spread of germs and reducing the risk of healthcare-associated infections is a top priority in these facilities. With the help of the CDC many practices have been put into place to help guide workers in successfully preventing the spread of illnesses. Rules and regulations have been created as well as proper training programs to help ensure this is done efficiently.

The level of application varies for surface infections. Base, intermediate and high levels are the categories in which the pathogens are separated. Some pathogens require higher levels of germicidal chemicals due to their resistance levels. Insuring the proper disinfectant being used to clean is crucial in keeping employees and staff safe. Step one of cleaning is to physically remove debris and contents from the infected area. Step two is using a freshly saturated wipe or CaviCide cloth to cleanse the area. You must wait the recommended time on any product being used. Failure to do so can result in an improper cleanse. There may be bacteria left over and otherwise spread.

Protecting yourself with proper PPE is another important practice to include in your janitorial routine. Businesses are required to provide the correct PPE for each worker, ensuring they are provided the proper tools to safely perform their jobs. Being aware of your surroundings and mindful of the tasks at hand can help certify you do these things correctly. Pathogens can contaminate both hard and porous surfaces. Patients can come into direct contact with contaminated surfaces, or indirectly through contaminated hands and gloves of healthcare workers. Proper disposal of this gear is also pivotal.

Healthcare facilities are often filled with ill individuals who have lower immune systems. This makes these facilities a common place for spreading contagious infections and diseases. Following the correct protocol can help yourself and everyone around you to stay as healthy as possible and limit the possibility of spreading more infectious disease. This can also benefit the general community and world as a whole safeguarding our health.
