My dad retired from janitorial cleaning 5 years ago. He was in the business for over 40 years, It never dawned on me how important it was to our daily lives. Now that I am older and into the cleaning business I see the importance of it.

Janitors and janitorial staff are very important in our daily lives. They make sure that private restrooms as well as public restrooms are cleaned and sanitized. Would you want to enter a restroom that is unsanitary? or one that smells badly? It definitely takes constant effort and attention to detail to keep a public building clean and sanitary.

Janitors and janitorial staff are trained on how to properly clean a restroom. What color cloths to use. How to pre spray sinks, urinals, toilets and surrounding areas. How to properly clean a urinal. They are also trained in Bloodborne pathogen. I have learned alot over the years and I will use all information and resources to the best of my ability.

Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms that can cause disease in humans. They are found in human blood and other bodily fluids, such as saliva, semen, and vaginal fluids. Bloodborne pathogens can be transmitted through contact with blood or other bodily fluids, such as through a needlestick injury or a cut on the skin.

Janitors are at an increased risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens because they may come into contact with blood or other bodily fluids while cleaning up accidents or spills. For example, a janitor might clean up a blood spill in a hospital or a school.

It is important for janitorial staff to know about bloodborne pathogens so that they can take steps to protect themselves from exposure. Some of the things that janitorial staff can do to protect themselves from exposure to bloodborne pathogens include:

    • Wearing gloves, gowns, and masks when cleaning up blood or other bodily fluids.
    • Using proper cleaning procedures, such as using bleach to disinfect surfaces that have been contaminated with blood or other bodily fluids.
    • Reporting any exposure to blood or other bodily fluids to their supervisor immediately.

By taking these steps, janitorial staff can help to protect themselves from exposure to bloodborne pathogens and prevent the spread of disease.

In addition to the above, here are some other things that janitorial staff can do to protect themselves from exposure to bloodborne pathogens:

    • Get vaccinated against hepatitis B.
    • Wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water after cleaning up blood or other bodily fluids.
    • Avoid eating, drinking, smoking, or applying cosmetics while cleaning up blood or other bodily fluids.
    • Dispose of sharps properly.
    • Report any injuries or exposures to their supervisor immediately.

Cleaning employees and staff who work in healthcare facilities, laboratories, and other industries that may expose them to bloodborne pathogens must receive appropriate training to prevent the spread of infections. Proper training will ensure that they understand the risks and can take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and others. This training should include information on how to properly clean up and dispose of bodily fluids, how to properly handle and dispose of contaminated items, and how to protect themselves from exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

In addition to protecting employees and staff, having knowledge of bloodborne pathogens can also help reduce the risk of infection transmission to patients and the general public. Cleanliness and sanitation are critical to maintaining a safe and healthy environment, and employees who are trained on how to properly handle bloodborne pathogens will be better equipped to maintain the necessary levels of cleanliness and safety.

Ultimately, understanding the importance of bloodborne pathogens and how to handle them can help reduce the risk of infection, improve safety, and ensure the well-being of everyone involved.  It makes for a safe cleaning environment and keeping all involved knowledgeable and aware of the risks.

The CDC reported that approximately 5.6 million healthcare and janitorial service workers are at risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms that are transmitted by blood. HIV, HVB, HCV (and many others) are bloodborne pathogens. These diseases are transmitted through infected body fluids that enter the bloodstream of an uninfected person. Many of these bloodborne pathogens can cause serious long term health problems or even death.

The most common ways of transmission for bloodborne pathogens are needlesticks, cuts, bites from humans, and mucous membranes. For example, if you are taking out the trash and come in contact with a dirty or used needle, you may come in contact with a bloodborne pathogen. Or you may need to mop up bodily fluids, and splashes can come in contact with your mucous membranes or contaminate a small tear in your skin. Any cleaning job where you come in contact with blood or other body fluids puts you at risk for spreading bloodborne pathogens. It is important to always assume that all body fluids you come into contact with are contaminated. This is called universal precautions and will help prevent the spread of bloodborne pathogens by ensuring all proper precautions are taken every time there is a risk.

It is necessary to know how to clean body fluids, what PPE to wear when cleaning body fluids, and how to properly dispose of body fluids. Gloves, goggles and possibly a face mask or gown are essential for your own protection from contamination. Hand washing after an exposure is also an important protective measures. Any contaminated waste must be labeled and disposed of separately, for example in different colored waste bags, typically red or orange.
