It may surprise individuals to learn of the negative health effects from basic cleaning products available on the market.  It may also be a surprise to them that manufacturers are not required by law to list the ingredients in their cleaning product, and that those companies are free to use nearly any chemical they want before they’ve even been properly tested for their effects on human health1.  Consumer cleaning products have been linked to cancer, birth defects, respiratory problems, asthma, breast cancer, hormone disruption and even serious health issues in children2

Many studies have been conducted to shed light on the effects of traditional cleaning products in a home or office.  One study conducted by a team of 15 researchers at the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development center concluded that the use of disinfectants in a home can cause children to become obese later in life3.   Another study, conducted by a team of European researchers, concluded that the effects on lungs from cleaning your home once a week is equivalent to smoking every day for 10 to 20 years4.  Unfortunately, the air quality in homes that use these toxic chemicals is five times more toxic than outdoor pollution5, and those chemicals can persist in dust in the home for years to inhale or ingest6.

The good news to all of this is that there is a better way.  Eco-friendly cleaning products have come a long way in the last several years.  Not only do they clean as effectively, if not better, than traditional cleaning products, but their pricing is comparable.  With that in mind, the only reason that traditional products maintain the market share is because of the lack of awareness and education.  Green cleaning companies can aim to change that mindset and set the public on a healthier path to a healthier home or office.

In fact, it may surprise some to know that basic everyday products such as baking soda, vinegar, and lemon juice are powerful, natural, non-toxic cleaners.  Commercial manufacturers have started to develop very effective cleaning products using powerful solutions such as hydrogen peroxide.  Other companies are even using plant-based products in their cleaning solutions.

Anyone can start to make a difference by throwing out the toxic cleaning products in their home or work environment.  If buying more environmentally friendly products, it’s important to understand that some products claiming to be eco-friendly are simply not.  It’s easy for consumers to be confused and become frustrated, and rightly so.

The most important thing to remember is that cleaning doesn’t have to be a health risk.  With all of the other concerns about the state of the world, cleaning with toxics chemicals can easily be taken off the list.  By trusting in a green cleaning company, the stress of knowing what products to use on what surfaces can be alleviated.  And you can start living a healthier life.  Find a green cleaning company at the Green Cleaning Service Directory.

The importance of cleaning employees & staff knowing about bloodborne pathogens

    •  Awareness - all members of a janitorial cleaning crew (including temporary, part-time, and independent contractors) need to be aware that they may come in contact with bio-hazardous materials.  The materials may be blood, or have blood contained within such as mucous, vomit, feces, saliva, etc.  In addition, the bio-hazardous materials could be on bedding materials, clothing, flooring, or equipment.  The all members of the cleaning staff must be properly trained to be aware of the best practices for working around potentially bio-hazardous materials.
    • Risk/Hazard - Once the staff has been trained to recognize/aware of bio-hazardous material, the next step is how to handle the suspect material.  First, before handling bodily fluids directly, or materials soaked/stained with bodily fluids, or bodily fluids are spotted on hard surfaces (flooring, walls, equipment, etc.), assume the material(s) are contaminated and need to be handled with caution.  The risk/hazard of not handling infectious materials properly is contracting serious diseases such as, Human Immune Deficiency Virus (HIV), which causes Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), Hepatitis B, or Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).
    • Response - Once a staff member has identified a potential risk/hazard they must take appropriate action such as, using their personal protective equipment (PPE).  At a minimum this includes wearing disposable gloves, goggles (eyewear protection), additional items may be needed depending on the circumstance (gown, disposable protective footwear, tongs to pick-up SHARPS.
    • Emergency - If during the cleaning process the staff member’s skin has been punctured, has ingested, or inhaled potentially infected materials, immediately start firs-aide treatment: encourage the wound to bleed, if possible hold the area under running water, wash the would using running water and plenty of soap, do not scrub while washing, do not suck the wound, dry and cover area with a sterile band-aide, immediately contact your supervisor, then seek medical advice.

Let's think about that for a minute.  How effective would any company be if their workplace was dirty?

It's proven that a clean work place helps keep your employees healthy and healthy employees equal fewer sick days.  Sick days cost businesses more than $225 billion dollars each year and result in 54% loss in productivity. If your janitorial team is focusing on daily disinfection of surfaces, vacuuming carpets, washing floors, and sanitizing restrooms it will minimize the spread of illnesses.

Cleanliness makes folks happy. When you walk in a building and it smells and looks good you feel clean and happy. When the janitors keep your workplace clean your employees feel like their workplace is appreciated.

Your employees may not even realize that a dirty workplace makes them less productive. The effects that lingering dust and germs can have on their breathing, energy levels, headaches or skin may make them feel a lack motivation.  Proper cleaning practices and quality cleaning supplies will positively impact the overall health of employees.

And lets not forget about your image.  When a client walks in and our office is dirty they are immediately uncomfortable.

Do you know if your cleaning company products are safe for you and the environment?

Wouldn't it make you feel more confident to know that your cleaning company has taken the time research and implement a green clean program for your business or home?

Many chemicals in the American marketplace have been found to be unregulated.  According to EcoWatch, the latest report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found 120 hazardous and unregulated chemicals in the United States.  Of these 120 chemicals, more than 90 chemicals were found in consumer and commercial products.

Even if the chemicals used in a company’s cleaning products are regulated, seniors, kids and pets are still not completely protected.   Regulated chemicals can still be harmful.

Toxic chemicals such as ammonia, phosphorus, alkylphenol ethoxylates and petroleum can get into the water supply from runoff.  Not only is this harmful to the environment and the wildlife population, but it can also get backed up into the water you drink.

Many cleaning products contain volatile compounds which can fill the air.  These chemicals can linger for quite awhile after use.  Breathing in such chemicals has been shown to negatively affect the nervous system, liver and kidneys.
