    Every day facilities like hospitals, office doctors or dentists are visited by hundreds of people with many different diseases.  During or after these visits the risk of contagious with bodily fluids containing bloodborne pathogens is present.  The ​Bloodborne Pathogens are microorganisms such as viruses or bacteria that are carried in blood and can cause disease in people.

    In the first instance we consider doctors, nurses or asistants in danger of contact; But it is also necessary to think about cleaning people.

    The cleaning staff is exposed to the bloodborne pathogens during the cleaning process.  In these bodily fluids like blood, saliva or throw up can be present Bloodborne pathogens like  malaria, syphilis, Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV) and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

    For this reason it is necessary that all cleaning staff follow precautionary procedures to eliminate the risk of infection. The first and most important guide is toconsider all blood and bodily  fluids as infectious. Before starting the cleaning, the cleaner staff must be wearing the  right personal protective equipment, consistent with glasses and gloves. The contents of garbage bags should not be pushed. Cover breaks in exposed skin. And if found syringes or other sharp objects on the floor or other superficies use  tweezers to lift them to disposal in the containers designed for these kind objects. Wash hands after finishing with antibacterial soap and in certain areas avoid eating, drinking ,smoking or applying balm. If for any reason any contact exists, the cleaner should inform his supervisor and together report to the medical center or if his working alone he contacts directly somebody from the medical center to make a report.

    Finally, remember that the first and best option is always to use precautionary measures.

    Risks from bloodborne pathogens are most commonly associate with exposure to the fallowing body fluids:  

    Blood : This included exposure to blood through needle sticks and sharp injuries, as  well as skin and mucous membrane  exposure.

    Semen, vaginal secretions urine, feces, saliva ,vomit, tears nasal secretion.  

    There are 26 different viruses That have been shown as a result of occupational exposure.

    The most common bloodborne diseases are hepatitis  B( HBV) ,Hepatitis C (HCV),and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

    Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause disease in humans.  The CDC estimates that 5.6 million workers in the health care industry and related occupations are at risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and others. All occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) places workers at risk for infection from bloodborne pathogens. OSHA defines blood to mean human blood, human blood components, and products made from human blood.  

    Cleaning employees and staff are in the group of workers that are at risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens. Cleaning workers are at risk wile cleaning bathrooms, patient rooms, surgery rooms, removing trash, etc. One of the most important things that employers needs to train their cleaning employees is how to avoid sharps injuries.

    Even do studies show that as many as one-third of all sharps injuries occur during disposal and nurses are particularly at risk, as they sustain the most needlestick injuries. Cleaning personnel needs to pay special attention to this specially when removing garbage, replacing the linen in beds or handling laundry.

    Every employer that have cleaning personnel or staff at risk should have all employees train in accordance with OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) as amended pursuant to the 2000 Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act, OSHA safety standards for bloodborne pathogens. It’s the employer responsibility to provide proper training and safety equipment to all employees, but it is the worker who needs to pay special attention wile working to prevent sharps injuries and avoid contact with bloodborne pathogens and prevent any contamination.

      An important aspect to civilised society is the demand to maintain certain levels of cleanliness. To obtain a clean and safe environment, cleaners should be aware of bloodborne pathogens and the steps necessary to avoid contamination or exposure.

    Bloodborne pathogens are pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and cause diseases such as HBV Hepatitis B Virus or HIV Human Immunodeficiency Virus. In order to reduce exposure certain Universal Precautions should be considered. Precautions such as the proper use of equipment like gloves,disinfectant, or color coded or properly labeled disposal containers, as well as the disinfection/ disposal of infected areas or equipment. 

    In the unfortunate incident of exposure, cleaning staff should be aware of their employer's control plan and notify OSHA immediately. OSHA is the occupational safety and health administration. Established in 1970, OSHA's mission is to provide safe and healthy working conditions. Those exposed should monitor their health for signs of HBV a liver disease with symptoms including but not limited to, fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, jaundice vomiting or diarrhea. Another common infectious disease is HIV. Signs of HIV are fatigue, flulike symptoms, rashes or swollen glands. These disease may not be evident for years to come and continued vigilance is advised.

    In closing, the importance of understanding and obtaining a safe and clean environment is achievable by educating those in the field. OSHA's safety guidelines are thorough and the risk of exposure is minimized when universal precautions are maintained.

    Over my 20 years or flood, fire, wind restoration work I have seen things ranging from a glass spilled on the carpet to a entire apartment building flooded with 3 feet of water. Each situation needed different actions. IJCSA reminded me through these courses of safety protocols and and the need to communicate. The use of proper equipment is important. fans, air scrubbers, DHs even heaters always need to dry out the effected areas as soon as possible. It is great to have a community to look to for questions and answers on situations of what to do if your on a pinch or if your not quite sure what to do.
