The COVID-19 omicron variant has an "unprecedented number of spike mutations" and poses a "very high" global risk, the World Health Organization said Monday.
Because of fears that the new variant has the potential to be more resistant to the protection offered by vaccines, there are growing concerns around the world that the pandemic and associated lockdown restrictions will persist for far longer than hoped.
"The overall global risk related to the new variant of concern omicron is assessed as very high," the WHO said, according to Reuters. The health body said countries should make sure that there are "mitigation plans in place" to deal with an increase in new cases. Scientists are working to determine how effective vaccines are in preventing infections with the new variant.

Concern about a new, heavily mutated variant of coronavirus first detected in southern Africa, has led the UK to restrict travelled to six African countries - South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini.
The variant, known as B.1.1.529, is the most heavily mutated version discovered so far - and it has such a long list of mutations that it was described by one scientist as "horrific". South Africa, Hong Kong and Botswana have identified just 59 cases of the variant, so far, while Israeli media also reports one case has been identified from a traveller. UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps paid tribute to South Africa's fast and transparent response, and said of the UK's decision to restrict travel: "This is a safety-first approach."

COVID-19 has killed more people in 2021 than 2020, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows.
The disease was reported as the underlying cause of death or a contributing cause of death for an estimated 377,883 people in 2020, accounting for 11.3% of deaths, according to the CDC.
As of late Sunday, 770,461 people total have died as a result of the coronavirus, CDC data says. That means around 14,700 more people have died in 2021 than last year due to COVID-19 — and there's still more than a month left in the year for that number to grow.
The CDC figures only account for reported deaths, and it's likely that more people died in 2020 due to COVID-19 than the recorded number; 2020 coronavirus-related deaths in the U.S. weren’t tracked until February...

The growth of cleaning services market can be attributed to growing acceptance of these services as a result of the economic upturn, increasing discretionary income, and the rise in dual-income households, supporting market expansion. Furthermore, expansion in the commercial sector and real estate investment are expected to fuel demand for various cleaning services.
However, high competition, particularly in industrialized countries, is one of the key reasons limiting market growth. On the contrary, rapid urbanization has had a favorable impact on the cleaning services business, albeit having a detrimental impact on the environment due to infrastructure strain. Many governmental garbage management operations, such as mobile applications for smart cities, are influencing the cleaning services market. The market for cleaning services is likely to continue to develop as public awareness of the benefits of a green and healthy environment grows, thereby creating opportunities for the global cleaning services market growth...

Growing outbreaks in the Midwest and Northeast are most responsible for pushing up the national numbers, and that comes after many weeks of high case counts and stress on states in the Mountain West where some hospitals are dealing with crisis levels of patients.
"There are still large swaths of the country under-immunized and even among states that are relatively well-vaccinated, like Colorado, New Mexico, Minnesota and Vermont, we're seeing sustained transmission," says Rutherford.
The uptick in cases hasn't yet translated into a national spike in new hospital admissions, which tend to trail a rise in infections by several weeks. However, the grim situation in some parts of the West and upper Midwest offers a concerning picture for other states where cases are now climbing.

MARTIN: So here we are, well into our second year of this pandemic. And there is not a nationwide surge, but COVID-19 is still spreading. It's affecting daily activities. How should we think about that? I mean, I think that, you know, some people are saying, this is what it's going to be like. This is the new normal.
Listen To Podcast Here
WACHTER: Yeah. I think I'm increasingly in that boat. And to make clear, I don't think that's a good new normal. I'd love us to be in a place where COVID was receded as a part of our lives and we were back to 2019. But I think it's increasingly clear that that's not likely to happen, that this is going to be with us for the foreseeable future. And we're going to be on this roller coaster where cases go up, and then they come down, and then they go up again.
