Yesterday, SEIU Local 105’s bargaining team began their first day of negotiations with several Denver cleaning contractors to push for better wages and working conditions for janitors.

Meanwhile, several dozen janitors congregated at SEIU Local 105’s office in a show of support for their negotiators.

“Janitors feel like they’re in a good position. They really feel like they put their lives on the line last year, on the front lines of the pandemic,” said David Fernandez, Communications Director at SEIU Local 105. “Also, just the costs of commercial real estate, of building, in our downtown has just gone up in that time, so there’s really no reason why we shouldn’t be paying our janitors a living wage, why we shouldn’t be ensuring better protections for them.”

Because of this, a union that represents hotel service workers is sounding an alarm and saying that nearly 40% of hotel-housekeeping jobs — more than 180,000 — are in danger of being permanently eliminated.

“Every time there’s a crisis, companies try to use it to hurt workers,” Unite Here International President D. Taylor told MarketWatch.

"He was such a dedicated family man and dedicated worker to Park La Brea," said Chan Rudrapatna, a friend. "All he wanted was to keep the building clean."

The 17-year-old suspect in custody was apparently trying to get into his girlfriend's apartment and allegedly attacked Mejia to get keys to the building.

"We believe Tomas tried to fight to defend himself and make sure the keys to the building were secure so the tenants were safe," said Alejandra Valles with the SEIU local that represents employees at the building. "Unfortunately he lost his life protecting the tenants he loved and the tenants that loved him."

In response to this report, a source told the NY Daily News that Kardashian hired a third-party vendor to organize the cleaning service for her Hidden Hills property. She was reportedly unaware of how this vendor allegedly handled the workers that they hired.

The source said, “Kim has no knowledge and is most certainly not at fault for the vendor and his agreements with his employees." A rep for Kardashian also released a statement to TMZ that also stressed that the reality star had no knowledge of the alleged treatment of the workers since she left those decisions up to the vendor that she hired. Her rep added, "Kim has never not paid a vendor for their services and hopes that the issue between these workers and the vendor who hired them can be amicably resolved soon."
