Importance of Cleaning Staff understanding Bloodborne pathogens

04 Aug 2025 3:28 PM | Ronaye Elie

In any workplace where cleaning and sanitation are performed specially in healthcare, janitorial, educational or industrial environments, employees may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens without warning. These pathogens, which include serious viruses such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C, can be transmitted through contact with infected blood and certain bodily fluids. While accidental exposure may seem unlikely, it can happen during tasks like cleaning restrooms, disposing of sharps, handling contaminated laundry, or responding to injuries. Therefore, it is essential that all cleaning staff receive bloodborne pathogen training and understand the potential risks with their daily duties.

Proper education ensures that employees recognize situations where exposure could occur and know how to respond safely. This includes being trained in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, face shields, and gowns, as well as how to properly clean and disinfect potentially contaminated surfaces using approved cleaning agents. Staff must also be taught to identify and correctly dispose of sharps, in designated containers and follow protocols for post-exposure procedures if an incident occurs. By equipping workers with this knowledge, employers not only ensure compliance with OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, but also create a safer, more confident workforce.

Beyond legal requirements, fostering awareness of bloodborne pathogens is a matter of employee safety and dignity. Workers have the right to know the risks they face and how to protect themselves. A well-informed cleaning team is better prepared to prevent contamination, protect coworkers and clients, and maintain a sanitary, risk-aware environment. Ultimately, education empowers staff to do their jobs responsibly and confidently, while upholding the health and safety of everyone in the facility.
