Bloodborne Pathogen Awareness

16 Jan 2021 11:49 AM | Kegan Lung

My name is Kegan with Surface Masters INC, Denver, CO. We have over 40 years of experience working in the cleaning industry, which has lead to multiple biohazard cleaning situations. As such, we can not stress the point enough, that proper handling of waste and proper cleaning techniques is cruel in avoiding coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens.

Being a family owned and operated business has both its benefits and trials. When someone you love isn't following proper protocol of the Exposure control plan. It becomes both a business and personal matter, and makes holding your team accountable a challenge.

For this reason we have found that regular meeting and discussions are the best approach to dealing with possible exposure and proper handling techniques. Because let's face it, when there is a job to be done often finishing the job is more of a focus than following safety regulations.

Making materials readily available makes this task more manageable. That is why we inventory our personal protection items before and after each job. And have clearly marked chemicals and waste areas on every job sight.

We even go as far as singing to each other. "Wash your hands, don't touch your face,  wear your gloves and mark the waste!" We find its much easier to remind people while singing instead of harsh reminders. After all a happy work space is a successful safe work space!
