How Being Green Cleaning Certified Benefits Your Company and the Environment

Green cleaning certification has become increasingly important in today's environmentally conscious world. Obtaining this certification can provide numerous advantages for your company or you as an individual in the cleaning industry. The International Janitorial Cleaning Services Association (IJCSA) offers a comprehensive green cleaning certification program that ensures members are up-to-date on safe, eco-friendly cleaning practices.

     Professional Credibility and Competitive Edge

By becoming green cleaning certified, you demonstrate your commitment to environmental sustainability and public health. This certification sets you apart from competitors and instills confidence in potential clients who are seeking environmentally responsible cleaning services. The IJCSA Green Cleaning Directory is a valuable resource for consumers looking for certified green cleaning providers, giving certified companies increased visibility and business opportunities.

     Environmental and Health Benefits

Green cleaning certification emphasizes the use of safe, non-toxic cleaning products and methods that protect both the environment and human health. By utilizing eco-friendly cleaning solutions and techniques, certified cleaners help reduce the release of harmful chemicals into the air and water systems. This approach not only safeguards the planet but also protects building occupants from exposure to potentially hazardous substances, creating healthier indoor environments for homes and workplaces.

    Ongoing Education and Compliance

The IJCSA requires yearly recertification to ensure that members stay current with the latest developments in green cleaning practices, regulations, and technologies. This continuous learning process keeps you at the forefront of the industry, enabling you to offer cutting-edge, sustainable cleaning solutions to your clients. Additionally, many local, state, and federal government agencies now require cleaning and janitorial companies to be certified in green cleaning practices, making certification essential for compliance and eligibility for certain contracts.

Implementing a green cleaning service program represents a strategic shift that aligns environmental responsibility with business success. Our comprehensive transition will begin with an audit of current cleaning products and methods, followed by systematic replacement with environmentally certified alternatives. Key changes will include switching to EPA Safer Choice-certified cleaning solutions, investing in microfiber cleaning tools that reduce water consumption by up to 90%, and incorporating HEPA-filter vacuum systems to improve air quality. Staff training will be paramount, with dedicated sessions on proper dilution ratios, cross-contamination prevention, and the correct application of green cleaning methods. We'll also implement a color-coding system for cleaning tools to prevent cross-contamination between different areas, and introduce portion-control dispensing systems to eliminate chemical waste.

The benefits of transitioning to a green cleaning program extend far beyond environmental stewardship. First and foremost, our clients will experience improved indoor air quality, as green cleaning products typically contain fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can trigger respiratory issues and allergies. This improvement directly translates to reduced sick days and increased productivity for building occupants. From a business perspective, green cleaning programs often result in lower long-term costs through reduced water consumption, more efficient product use, and decreased packaging waste. Additionally, our green certification will provide a significant marketing advantage, appealing to the growing number of environmentally conscious clients and potentially commanding premium pricing. Employee satisfaction and retention are likely to improve as well, as staff members take pride in contributing to environmental sustainability and benefit from working with non-toxic products.

Our commitment to transparency will include regular environmental impact reports shared with clients, highlighting metrics such as water saved, reduction in chemical usage, and improvements in waste management. This data-driven approach will not only demonstrate the tangible benefits of our green cleaning program but also help identify areas for continuous improvement. By investing in sustainable cleaning practices, we're not just adapting to current market demands – we're positioning our business at the forefront of the industry's inevitable shift toward environmental responsibility.

Bloodborne Pathogens are often present in cleaning situations whether that be in our own homes or a medical facility. It is very important to understand the impact they can have on our health.

It is important to follow universal precautions when these Pathogens may be present. These include HIV,HBV, and HB. Following universal precautions includes wearing the proper personal protection equipment, such as gloves, masks, etc

OSHA has established these guidelines to prevent exposure. It is very important for employers to have a safety plan on hand if there is exposure, as the plan is already established and can prevent further harm to employees.

The most important benefit knowing about the risks of bloodborne pathogens is employee's safety when it comes to cleaning a Health's Care Facility.

I found this course helpful because as business owner knowing how to protect my employees from any contagious situation make my workforce healthy and safe therefore, more proactive and professional to their tasks.

HBV, HIV, are threats that all of us in the cleaning industry should be aware and ready to stop the spread according to the OSHA regulations.

When it comes to cleaning our homes and workplaces, many of us reach for familiar, widely available chemicals without giving much thought to their potential impact on our health and the environment. However, research suggests that these everyday cleaning chemicals can have serious harmful effects on human health and the environment. In contrast, green products offer a safer, more sustainable alternative.

Health Risks Associated with Everyday Cleaning Chemicals

Studies have linked exposure to common cleaning chemicals to various health problems, including respiratory issues, allergic reactions and even cancer (1). For example, a study published in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology found that women who used cleaning products regularly experienced reduced lung function (2). Additionally, many cleaning chemicals contain endocrine disruptors, which can interfere with hormone function and lead to reproductive issues (3).

    Environmental Impact

Conventional cleaning products also pose a significant threat to the environment. Chemicals like ammonia, bleach and quaternary ammonium compounds (quats) can contaminate waterways, harming aquatic life and ecosystems (4). Furthermore, the production and disposal of these chemicals contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and waste management issues.

    Benefits of Green Products

Green products, on the other hand, offer a healthier, more sustainable alternative. Made from natural, biodegradable ingredients, these products minimize environmental harm and reduce exposure to toxic chemicals. Some benefits of using green products include:

    • Reduced indoor air pollution

    • Lower risk of allergic reactions and respiratory issues

    • Environmentally friendly packaging and disposal

    • Sustainable sourcing and production practice

    • International Journal of Consumer Studies and Applications (IJCSA) have a directory with green companies you can find.

    Conclusion

The risks associated with everyday cleaning chemicals are clear. By choosing green products, individuals can protect their health, reduce their environmental footprint and promote sustainable practices.
