With the sheer abundance of cleaners and cleaning companies out there, it's hard for a client to choose. Knowing whether a company is good at their craft or a trustworthy individual is usually quite difficult for a client to decipher. One of the best ways to gauge a cleaning company on their skill and business ethics is whether or not their a member of IJCSA, and specifically when hiring a home cleaner if the company is RCS certified (Residential Cleaning Specialist).

Becoming RCS certified is time consuming and requires effort and dedication. This dedication is exactly what a client needs and requires from a cleaning business. When the client hires a RCS certified cleaning company they can rest assured that home is in good and qualified hands.

The RCS certification requires that a cleaning company is knowledgeable in cleaning all things associated with a client's home. Having a cleaning company that cares so much to educate themselves on how to better serve a client's home needs is just one of the benefits. Along with the fact that the cleaner will know exactly what every room in their home needs to be properly cleaned.

Some examples are how to properly clean a shower with mildew stain remover plus detergent with a grout brush for tiled showers. Another is checking if your thumb leaves a print when using lemon oil on natural wood surfaces. This would indicate the cleaner used too much oil. Lastly is to groom a carpet when vacuuming. Grooming a carpet is making straight passes while overlapping to ensure the carpet looks professionally vacuumed.

These were just some of many of the examples of proper cleaning etiquette that a RCS certified cleaner would be knowledgeable in. If a client is looking for a house cleaner, a RCS certified cleaning company is their best option. They have the knowledge and know how to achieve the client's cleaning goals in the best way possible.

Bloodborne pathogens are extremely important to educate yourself on. This is important for both employer and employee to understand equally. No one is above the negative ramifications when coming in contact with bloodborne pathogens, and all face the same risk exposure.

Exposure to contaminated bloodborne pathogens can include HIV, HVB, and Hepatitis just to name a few.  Some of these diseases may not show symptoms for several years, and can result in death. Proper knowledge of how to clean and disinfect is crucial in safety of yourself and others.

Employers must follow proper safety precations when handling situations where an employee comes in contact with bloodborne pathogens. These include following OSHA guidelines, keeping a journal of employee exposures, and having correct medical supplies available. These records are kept for long periods of time in the event that an employee shows signs of illness due to past exposure.

Those in the cleaning industry may come into contact with blood. OSHA has developed standard guidelines which will help us to reduce exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms present in human blood which can cause disease in humans upon contact. Most exposure occurs through the nose, mouth, or open wounds on the skin. Saliva and vomit may also contain blood born pathogens.

The CDC recommends that all bodily fluids be considered as potentially infectious. We should assume that all blood and body fluids contain bloodborne pathogens. It is important to use the correct disinfecting cleaning solution when cleaning up bodily fluids. Personal protective equipment, such as gloves or goggles, should be used when cleaning and then disposed of in the correct color bag or cleaned with disinfection solution.

Exposure could lead to Hepatitis B or HIV both of which may not show up for years. The business should have a written exposure control plan. OSHA requires documentation from the employer when an employee is exposed. This documentation must be kept for 3 years following the exposure.

Always wear PPE, do not touch your mouth, do not reuse towels or sponges, handle laundry with caution, do not press down on trash, use properly labeled and color coded bags for items that contain potential bloodborne pathogens.

It is of very great importance to understand why owners, managers, and employees should be trained in dealing with bloodborne pathogens.

HBV, HIV, and now with our recent pandemic of COVID-19 can be a deadly business. All cleaning companies should be treating every job as a possible death trap and care about making sure employees are practicing safety using the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Prevention and exposure guidelines.

Using these simple tools and educating your employees can save you, your employees, and all your families possible tragedy in the future.
